Bostock is also a surname, commonly thought to originate from the Cheshire area. The original form of the name is Botestock. It is compounded of two Saxon words: 'Bote' which is a term in Old English law signifying compensation. 'Stock' is a root or trunk, figuratively speaking, a place from which a family sprung. Therefore, Botestock means a place given in compensation for something.
