USB-CABBG is a French rugby union team that currently takes part in Pro D2, the second level of the country's professional league system.

They were founded in 2006 as a result of a merger between two Bordeaux clubs, Stade Bordelais and Club Athlétique Bordeaux-Bègles Gironde. They wear claret (in French: bordeaux) and white. They are based in Bordeaux in Aquitaine, and play alternatively at the Stade Sainte Germaine, in Le Bouscat and at the Stade André Moga, in Bègles.

[edit] History

After CA Bordeaux-Bègles Gironde, the historic club of the Bordeaux area, based in the left-wing stronghold of Bègles (southeastern suburbs) went into liquidation in 2004, another local club, Stade Bordelais, a multi-sports club, once a powerhouse of French rugby until World War I, reached the professional second division (Pro D2). But in order to set up a really powerful club in the area, a merger was finally decided in March 2006. A commercial venture called Bordeaux Rugby Métropole was set up to develop rugby in the Bordeaux area, with a new professional team, USB-CABBG, as its flagship. Only the professional squads were actually merged, as each club keeps its youth teams. There was no agreement on the name, each club refusing to give up, hence the cumbersome name USB-CABBG. USB-CABBG took the spot of Stade Bordelais in Pro D2.
