[edit] The Band

« Bienvenue à Toulouse, you’re welcome al paìs. Bienvenue à Toulouse, you’re welcome al paradìs »

“Bombes 2 Bal” are a group singing in both French and the Occitan language. Generally they use local instruments from the south west of France. The B2b’s as they locally know are made up from four girls and two guys from Toulouse who use local instruments from the south west but also take influence from the music of the north-east of Brazil. Under the guidance of Claude Sicre one part of the Fabulous Trobadors

The "Bombes2bal” in its first incarnation was born out of the friendship of Lise Arbiol and Aurélie Neuville and under the guidance of Claude Sicre (former fabulous band member). Today, the B2b’s has grown to six members with a couple of dancers. (their function is to show and make people participate in the dancing of transitional dancers) Indigenous Currently the line up stands with Magali Brunel who sings and plays the agogos bell, Martine Lataste on accordion, and harmonica, Romain Magnes on various percussion instruments and the recent addition of Jérémy Couraut on bass and violin). An interesting feature of the B2b’s is that each member of the group has the opportunity to sing and play any of the instruments adding to the richness of the group.

One of the overall aims of the B2b’s, is that they try to show people an old form of music but brought forward with new influences for instance the Forro style of music from South America which gives them a versatility allowing them to play and reunite their audiences.

[edit] The Story Behind the Name

The name is a play on words, based on two French expressions "C'est De La Balle" and "C'est De La Bombe" both roughly meaning "Things are great" but there is a degree of poetic licence or nuances in each of these meanings

[edit] Danse Avec ta grand-mère

“Dance with your grandmother” (Dance avec ta grand-mere), the title of the first album that came out in autumn 2004. This album started the ball rolling allowing them to explore the vibrancy of the Occitan language of Southwest France while mixing it with various different styles for example “Forro” of the Northeast Brazil. The “Forro” takes its name from “For All” and is a style of music rich in popular dances which originates from Brazil when the English were building the Pernambouc railway. Forro or for the French “pour tous” has a logical history in Toulouse, because the Portuguese and Galiciens took the ideas for forro from the north-eastern parts of the Iberian peninsula and their respective histories of the Occitan troubadours. So the embaladores of Brazil who sing by using improvisational techniques took the Occitan songs and made them their own. With their entangled histories emerged the new bands of Toulouse, Les Fabulous Trobadors, Bombes2bal and many more. Claude Sicre and Ange B., have often made this kinship work. Claude Sicre who accompanies the fate of the Bombes2bal since their beginning, writes the majority of the songs.

[edit] Bal Indigène

The second album’s direction has been more focused on the sounds and traditions of the Occitan language unlike the first which was heavily influenced by the Forro traditions. This has brought them back to their origins and their idea to reinvent the traditional music scene. In order that the B2b’s

can fulfill their original mission: reinvent and reinvigorate the Ball’s of Toulouse and the south-west.

Claiming to invent an old identity doesn’t sum up the bombes2bal as this would lack sincerity, it is really the other way around the Bombes2bal are really giving an opening to the Occitan travel traditions, bring the past into the modern and the fusion of different influences which make up the B2b’s array of instruments giving. The instruments are often chosen here for their functionality; light, mobile and without limits giving them the prospect to create the ball around them.

This ball, which exchanges malice and melancholy with energy and importance, walks people in full throttle in the cultures and south west worlds that is le gascon, the Occitan country. (Vau al horn) while making the listener understand and feel that while the past are all our “lauragais” roots (Aval a la ribèra) are living enteritis.

The native ball (“Bal Indigene”) has been realized by Vincent Segal and the Fabulous Tobadors have shared since a little time a session of the anniversary-album of the seal of approval “Tot ou Tard”. The cellist signs too the arrangement of “Welcome in Toulouse“ his classical instrument and my “ektara” comments Sicre, “it’s the meeting of the Capitole and the Arnaud Bernard area….”
