Bole (color)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bole is a color that is a symbolic representation of the color of the trunk of a tree.[citation needed] There is an English word bole meaning the trunk of a tree, but according to the American Heritage Dictionary, this word [1] is simply a homograph/homophone that does not share the etymological origin of the color word bole [2], which derives from Latin bōlus (lump of earth) and refers to a kind of soft fine clay whose reddish-brown varieties are used as pigments, hence its use as a word for a reddish-brown color.

The color bole is displayed at right.
This color represents the color of a bole (the trunk of a tree).[citation needed]
Bole is one of the oldest color names in English. The first recorded use of bole as a color name in English was in the year 1386. [1]
It is interesting to note that even though the actual trunks of most trees are a lighter shade of brown than this, when given a set of paints that includes various shades of brown to children to make their "lollypop"-like paintings of a tree, they seem to instinctively choose this color to paint the trunk of the tree.[citation needed]
