Bokaro is located at 23.78° N 85.97° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 234 metres (767 feet).

As of 2001 India census[2], Bokaro Thermal has a population of 36,419. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Bokaro Thermal has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 75% and female literacy of 58%. 14% of the population in this young town is under 6 years of age.

Bokaro Thermal is one of the oldest power plants in Asia. It was opened in 1952. Bokaro Thermal (BTPS) is situated about 35 km from Bokaro Steel City.
