  1. ^ Overtime rules in college football were introduced in 1996, making ties impossible.
  2. ^ One year after the founding of Boise Junior College, the school began to play football in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
  3. ^ In 1968, Boise College began to compete with four-year universities in the NCAA "College Division" level during a transitional period that began in 1965 and finished in 1969.
  4. ^ In 1973 the NCAA "College Division" was renamed "Division II".
  5. ^ When NCAA was re-aligned in 1978, the Big Sky Conference was moved from the Division II level to the newly-created Division I-AA level, a subdivision of Division I.
  6. ^ Due to sanctions, Boise State was not allowed to claim the conference title in 1979, nor were they allowed to participate in the playoffs.
  7. ^ Though they finished in first, Boise State did not win the conference in 1981 because they lost the tiebreaker to Idaho State.
  8. ^ 1996 Was the first year Boise State began play at the Division-IA level.
  9. ^ In 2006, "Division I-A" was renamed "Division I Football Bowl Subdivision" or "Division I FBS" for short.
