Bogs Adornado

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William "Bogs" Adornado is a former Filipino professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association from 1975 to 1987, for the Crispa Redmanizers, U/Tex Wranglers, Great Taste Coffee Makers, Formula Shell and the Hills Bros Coffeemakers. He is a three-time PBA Most Valuable Player in 1975, 1976 and 1981.

He is a member of the PBA 25's Greatest Players of All-time and the PBA Hall of Fame. Due to his accomplishments, Adornado is considered one of the best Filipino basketball players of all-time. After Leo Austria left the Adamson Falcons, Adornado was elevated from being an assistant coach to head coach after the 69th UAAP season. He was also a former head coach for Alaska Milk and an assistant coach for the Mobiline Phone Pals and Shell Turbo Chargers in the PBA and the UST Growling Tigers in the past.

[edit] PBA career

In 1975, Adornado began his PBA career with the Crispa Redmanizers and earned the distinction of being the very first PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) and also the first PBA player to win the said award in back-to-back seasons in 1975 and 1976, leading Crispa to four PBA titles during that time including the very first recorded Grand Slam in 1976. He was a prolific scorer with a deadly outside shot. In an era where shooting coaches were unheard of, Adornado had a picture-perfect textbook jump-shot that was unstoppable especially in clutch situations.

After his stint with the Redmanizers where he suffered an almost career-threatening injury, he moved to the U/Tex Wranglers and led the team to a win over the Toyota Tamaraws in the 1980 PBA Open Conference championship that saw U/Tex coming from a four point deficit with 16 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. It was considered as the longest 16 seconds in the PBA history. In 1981, Adornado won his third MVP award, becoming the first player to win three MVP awards in his career and at a time when no other PBA player has won multiple MVP awards. This record was later on broken by 4-time MVP winners Ramon Fernandez and Alvin Patrimonio.

Adornado later joined Great Taste after his stint with the Wranglers. In 1985, he played for rookie team Shell Azodrin Bugbusters along with former Crispa teammates Philip Cezar and Bernie Fabiosa. Under the former Crispa stars and head coach Freddie Webb, Shell made its first finals appearance in its first season, losing to the Great Taste Coffee Makers.

In 1987, Adornado joined the Hills Bros Coffee Kings for his final season in the league. He led the Coffee Kings to the finals losing to the San Miguel Beermen. Adornado's number 33 has been retired by the Alaska franchise and was honored in the opening of the 1988 PBA season.

[edit] Coaching Career

After his playing career, Adornado became the coach of Alaska before he was let go by the franchise. He later joined the Mobiline Phone Pals and the Ateneo Blue Eagles as an assistant coach.

When Leo Austria was named coach of the Shell Turbo Chargers in 2004, Adornado joined Austria's staff. He and the former 1985 PBA Rookie of the Year were teammates with Shell. After Shell's disbandment from the league, Adornado was named in Austria's Adamson Falcons coaching staff.

After the 69th season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), Austria left the Falcons to concentrate on his post as the Philippine Basketball Association expansion Welcoat Dragons head coach while Adornado was named as the school's new head coach. In his coaching debut in the Collegiate Champions League, the Falcons lost to the University of the Visayas Green Lancers 70-67 in the 1st round of the tournament.
