Boggabri, New South Wales

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boggabri is a small town on the Kamilaroi Highway in north-western New South Wales, Australia in Narrabri Shire Council, between Gunnedah and Narrabri. Its population lies around 1000.

The name Boggabri comes from Gamilaraay bagaaybaraay, literally "having creeks". The same "creek" element is found in the name of Boggabilla.

The Namoi river passes through Boggabri. Fishing is a popular activity on the Namoi river.

Boggabri's main tourist attraction is Gin's Leap, so-called after a story of an Aboriginal girl who jumped from the cliff while trying to escape a group of men in the 17th or 18th century.

There are two local primary schools in Boggabri; one public and the other religious.

Boggabri railway station is situated on the Mungindi (or North West) railway line, 515 km from Sydney.[1] The station opened in 1882 consists of a station building on a single side platform, a passing loop and small goods yard. Currently a single daily Xplorer diesel railmotor operating between Sydney and Moree serves the station.[2]
