Talk:Boer goat

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

hi my name is colleen Jiggetts and I recently purchase boer goats and we have tried everything to keep these goats in but they continue to get out please help

== answer 2????? ==Electric fence is the best bet, usually more to keep the guard dogs in than the goats. We use one wire about 12" off the ground. the rest of the fence is wire mesh. Mooresboers 23:54, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

hi what kinda fence do u have?? cause that might be your problem

we use a normal fence, with a thick hedge behind it. We have Pygmy and boer goats. the pygmys can escape through the hedge, but are stopped by a fence. they often rest in that hedge when it is hot. J.armitage 13:40, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] is any1 on?

hi are u sill there?

Does anyone think we should make a section on influential boer goats and people in the industry? (Lollalo 23:47, 18 October 2007 (UTC))

[edit] Horns

Why nothing on horns?J.armitage 14:02, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Horns should be left on if at all possible unless you are raising wethers (casterated males).

If you are keeping the goat as a pet, you should probably get a goat without horns (best to do with an iron when they are young), but if it is a show goat it is best to leave them on so the judge could see the horn set. Some goat shows have there own rules on hornsLollalo 23:40, 18 October 2007 (UTC)lollalo

[edit] Info on showing...?

I am trying to purchase a Boer goat for my daughter for a 4 H project. I am pretty much goat illiterate. Can anyone tell me where to find some good info?

Find a show near you. Be there before the show, while they prepare their animals and after the show when the breeders may have time for you. Talk to as many as you can, paying more attention to the winners. They are the ones who usually have the right answers. Shows can be found near you by looking on the websites of the organizations listed here. Mooresboers 23:54, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Moved from article

When walking your boer goat you need to keep his right or left front leg even with yours. You also need to have just his head and neck in front of your right or left leg.And also when walking your boer goat you need to a little bit of tension on your lead rope to kina pull his head up for when walks.

One of the best websites is boergoats.com, they have an online goat show so that you can see what a good goat is supposed to look like. Another important thing though that you can't always see in pictures is the muscling. You can feel the goats loin and watch it walk (the more muscle it has the stiffer it will walk. I've been told a good indicator for kids on future muscling is how much width they have between the horns. (Lollalo 23:45, 18 October 2007 (UTC))lollalo

[edit] the section on guardian dogs

does not belong in this article. that section is a description of guardian dogs, not a description of the boer goat. ill remove it, consider relocating...Kas0809 (talk) 01:45, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
