A body briefer is a garment similar to the girdle but providing more comprehensive coverage and firmer shaping. The shape of body briefer has a similar form to a leotard but is constructed of heavier elasticated fabric and may contain wires to give additional support.
It is normally worn by women who want comprehensive reshaping of most of the body, normally the breasts are shaped and the stomach is flattened. A through the leg strap is often required to prevent the garment riding up on the wearer.
Often a body briefer includes a panty girdle or control brief and in this form is often referred to as an "all in one". This style does not require a strap through the legs as the panty girdle effectively holds the garment down, and often has an opening in the crotch for sanitary functions.
These garments are becoming increasingly more popular in modern society and are referred to by many names "All In One", "Body Briefer", "Body Shaper" and are often listed as shapewear, foundationwear or girdles. In the early years they were often referred to as a "Spencer" in England.
