[edit] What are Sensory Systems?

[I'm trying to situate sensory systems within the broader context of systems in general. This means more than just the physiological aspects of these systems but the environmental context as well}

Sensory Systems are systems comprised of information carried through energy exchanges that allow embodied beings to perform actions in their environment. Both biological and artificial organisms participate in interaction with their environment utilizing multiple sensory systems. Biological organisms' actions that are enabled through sensory systems include foraging, habitat selection, reproduction, and defense.
