Hello! This page is about me, John Richard Moser! I currently take classes at the Community College of Baltimore County in pursuit of several degrees, primarily a Computer Science A.A. degree; but I have already achieved the A.A.S. of Network Technologies with a focus on CISCO vendor products, and have only a few more classes required for the Network Technologies with a focus on MCSA Certification Studies. My primary interests include Linux and Unix based systems, so I will also pursue the RHCE.

[edit] Hobbies
I have many hobbies.
[edit] Computers
I have passed the CompTIA Security+ certification test, a professional computer security certification exam.
I use Linux, specifically Ubuntu Linux; although I used to use Gentoo Linux with a PaX and grsecurity enhanced kernel, Stack Smash Protected, and Position Independent executable base. The use of Hardened Gentoo exposed me to these features and lead me into computer security and information assurance.
I aspire to become a hacker, and currently have interest in reverse engineering and vulnerability analysis. Protection systems such as PaX and ProPolice greatly interest me, because they mitigate or reduce the severity of vulnerabilities.
I have used several programming languages, including C; C++; Objective-C; bash; perl; tcl/tk; BASIC; Visual Basic 4.0 through 6.0; Java Script; and 6502 and x86 assembly. Of these, my favorites remain C, Objective-C, bash, and 6502 assembly.
[edit] Language
Mostly I dislike foreign language; but a few interest me. Latin-Germanic languages like Spanish or French serve to annoy me more than anything; Russian and German are disinteresting.
The first real language that caught my attention was Japanese. While French annoys me and German or Spanish contain words I can kind of pick out, oriental languages are a garbled mess of garbage. The language structure from basic sentence structure to conjugation grammar are different; the root words don't match; and I can't begin to decode the language with any amount of casual exposure. Further, Japanese has a pleasing sound when performed by a skilled singer, such as Jill Goldin in the last track of Chrono Symphonic.
Because of the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, strangely constructed languages pose an academic interest. Of these include the artificial languages Lojban and Klingon. Lojban is too logically structured for me; but Klingon is highly interesting. The Klingon language has a good sound to it, and a particular interesting feel; it is a very direct language, harsh and powerful. Cursing is even a fine art according to the fictional basis for the language.
[edit] Math
I don't really like math all that much; but I did invent the Pirate Coefficient:
Below is the proof for the Pirate Coefficient:
- 2r = d
- drrr = rdrr
[edit] Achievements
Stuff I've done.
[edit] Published works
I'm published on LWN.net.
- Security-Improving Technologies that can be Deployed Now
- Prelink and Address Space Randomization
- Optimizing Linker Load Times
- Virtual Machines and Memory Protections
[edit] Developer activity
I've only been minimally active as a developer ever, mostly testing out development versions of distributions such as Gentoo and Ubuntu and reporting bugs, which is just basic quality assurance testing same as any other user actively engaged in the system's growth.
Besides this, I did spend a short time maintaining the PaX markings for Gentoo Linux and the script that applies them.
I also got bootchart working on the Children's Machine. I should be doing other work on that, like making readahead run....
[edit] Awards
I've won some awards :)
[edit] Collegiate CyberDefense Competition
I've been attending the Collegiate CyberDefense Competition regionals since it began in 2005. These are Red vs. Blue hacker competitions sponsored by the National Science Foundation, in which a team of students from each participating college attempts to defend a network from malicious attackers. Obviously each time I go in with a team and we place 3rd or better, we get a medal.
- March 2006
- Attended with the team from the Community College of Baltimore County
- Placed 2 of 5, silver medal
- At InformIT again
- March 2005
- Attended with the team from the Community College of Baltimore County
- Placed 3 of 5, bronze medal
- Reported on by Seth Fogie
- Reported by ISC (unfortunately, didn't mention my team mates, all of whom were very helpful!)
- Apparently mentioned on page 6 of this document
[edit] Barnstars
