[edit] Translation of "Blaues Wunder"

1. "Wunder" can be translated as "wonder" as in "die sieben Weltwunder" -> "the seven wonders of the world". A wonder is another word for a miracle of human invention:

"wonder 4. often Wonder A monumental human creation regarded with awe, especially one of seven monuments of the ancient world that appeared on various lists of late antiquity. " dictionary.com

2. The phrase "Blaues Wunder" inparticular is usually translated as "blue wonder":

"Blue Wonder (A). The German Blaues Wunder, which means “a queer story,” as Du sollst dein blaues wunder schen, You will be filled with amazement" THE DICTIONARY OF PHRASE AND FABLE BY E. COBHAM BREWER

3. "Blue Wonder" is the name usually given to this bridge in English. Here are some examples:

  • Dresden : Tuesday, February 13, 1945, by Frederick Taylor - "So the striking structure from the 1890s, nicknamed by the locals the "Blue Wonder" because of its color, was saved." see extract
  • Frommer's Germany 2005: "While you’re cruising, look for the Blaues Wunder (Blue Wonder), one of Dresden’s most celebrated bridges, completed in 1893"
  • "the 'Blue Wonder', an impressive steel construction painted sky-blue that bridges the river" from germany-tourism.de
  • "Dresden's equivalent to San Fran's Golden Gate Bridge is called blue wonder ('Blaues Wunder'). " www.about-germany.org

[edit] NPOV?

Hi, there was a NPOV template on the page but no explanation here about what was supposed to be biased. As it doesn't seem biased to me I've removed the template; if you put it on again simply write a comment here about what the problem is. Also, I'm wondering about the removal of the word "lovely" to describe the Blasewitz villas. Does NPOV really go so far that we can't make any subjective comments whatsoever? [edit] Name

The official name of the bridge is "Loschwitzer Brücke" not "Blaues Wunder", which is 'only' the popular term for it. To search a map of Dresden for Blaues Wunder can be therefor a dissapointment in many cases. --62.117.26.145 09:22, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
