[edit] Description

[edit] Appearance

Lacies have tight, smooth, sleek coats that are clean in appearance and usually slate gray, but sometimes red or cream. Their coats always have white on the lower chest and sometimes the paws. A blue dog with red markings is called a tricolor. Lacies are about 18 to 25 inches tall at the shoulder, and weigh 25-50 pounds when fully grown. The eyes are an unusual yellow to orange colour, giving them a unique appearance.

[edit] Temperament

Lacies can be either indoor or outdoor dogs. They are devoted to their family, good with children, and hardworking, needing daily strenuous activity. They are, however, very sensitive to loud noise and should not be kept near loud environments. They also can become nervous when reprimanded too harshly and respond much better to firm, quiet commands. Lacies usually do not become hyper when not worked, as some herding and sporting dogs do. Being extremely intelligent, they can perform many tasks and are very easy to train, learning skills in hours or days. They are very easily housebroken but do need things to do around the home as puppies until they mature. After age two, they have calmed down significantly and are much easier to keep in the house.

[edit] Health

Very healthy with no known genetic problems, commonly living to 15 and 16 active years old. Also, as most hounds, they are extremely resistant to snake bites and are sturdy enough to withstand most kinds of physical damage.

[edit] History

On March 15, 2005, in the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas, Representative Joaquin Castro filed House Concurrent Resolution No. 108 proposing the blue lacy as "...the official state dog breed of Texas." This legislation was proposed to recognize the original breeders, and their contribution to the State of Texas, and to recognize the blue lacy as a Texas original. House Concurrent Resolution No. 108 was adopted by the Texas House of Representatives on May 15, 2005, and by the Senate ten days later on May 25, 2005. Governor Rick Perry signed the legislastion adopting the blue lacy as "...the official State Dog Breed of Texas" on June 18, 2005.

The Blue Lacy was named after the Lacy Brothers, Frank, George, Edwin, and Harry Lacy, of Burnet County, Texas. The dog was noted by the Lacys to be a coyote, Greyhound and scenthound mixture. The dog's natural herding instincts enable it to work everything from chickens in the barnyard to the rankest Texas Longhorn cattle.

Blue Lacy Game Dog breed is officially recognized by the National Kennel Club (NKC).
