Blue Hills (Bloomfield, Connecticut)

Blue Hills is a census-designated place (CDP) in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 3,020 at the 2000 census. It is known as a neighborhood of northern Hartford, and Southern Bloomfield.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²), all land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,020 people, 1,008 households, and 782 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,022.8/km² (2,643.7/mi²). There were 1,044 housing units at an average density of 353.6/km² (913.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 9.80% White, 83.11% African American, 0.40% Native American, 1.23% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.49% from other races, and 3.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.07% of the population.

In 2000, 23.9% of Blue Hills residents identified as being of Jamaican heritage. This was the highest percentage of Jamaican Americans of any place in the country.

There were 1,008 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% were married couples living together, 28.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.4% were non-families. 19.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.29.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 82.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.1 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $48,859, and the median income for a family was $52,361. Males had a median income of $36,842 versus $30,972 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $21,618. About 3.9% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.6% of those under age 18 and 13.1% of those age 65 or over.

The main north-south roads are Granby Street and Blue Hills Avenue (Route 187). The main east-west road is Cottage Grove Road (Route 218). The L (92), T, U, S, F and Q Connecticut Transit bus routes serve the area. There have been plans for the local railroad, the Griffin Line (which is used by freight), to be made into commuter rail. Interstate highways 91 and 291 link Blue Hills to New Haven, Hartford, Springfield, Massachusetts, and points east of the Connecticut River.

The main place to shop in Blue Hills is the Capaco Shopping Center off of Cottage Grove Road. It has a McDonald's, Stop and Shop, iHop, CVS, Lowes, Boston Chicken, Blockbusters, Burlington Coat Factory, Home Depot and many others.

Blue Hills is home to Annie Fisher School, Mark Twain School, Weaver High School,Watkinson School, and the University of Hartford

Blue Hills is home to The First Cathedral, New England's Largest Protestant Church.
