Blue Bonnet (brand)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Blue Bonnet is a brand of margarine and other bread spreads and baking fats, owned by ConAgra Foods.

Blue Bonnet was a small, independent margarine vendor until 1943, when it was purchased by Standard Brands and turned into a national brand with the slogan: "Everything's Better With Blue Bonnet On It!" In the early years, restrictive laws in much of the USA and Canada made it very difficult to sell margarine. Margarine was often subject to excessive taxes, or forbidden from being coloured yellow like butter, so that dairy producers were protected from competing with cheaper vegetable oil based spreads. The Margarine Act of 1950 freed markets, and Blue Bonnet introduced the quarter pound stick of margarine, which quickly became the standard format for margarine and butter in the United States.

Standard Brands merged with Nabisco in July 1981, but Nabisco ultimately sold Blue Bonnet to ConAgra, along with a number of other food brands, in 1998.
