Red Sea and East Africa to New Caledonia, and as far as the Great Barrier Reef. Recently reported from Tonga.

The bludger reaches up to 90cm in length and 14.5kg in weight. The species Carangoides fulvoguttatus is very similar but has more spots on its sides.

The bludger feeds on shrimp and small fish.

[edit] Habitat

Inhabits deep offshore reefs, being mostly found near corals and rocks. Juveniles form small schools while large individuals are solitary.

It is known to be an excellent food fish.
