[edit] Hello User:Blofeld of SPECTRE

My name is User:Shshshsh, but you can call me Shahid. How are you? ;))

LOL How are your buddy? ShahidTalk2me 17:16, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh wish you a speedy recovery friend. ShahidTalk2me 21:19, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Ooh LOL great. I was thinking... One minute ShahidTalk2me 22:05, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
I now know how you create a braglist. ShahidTalk2me 22:09, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Here you can get a list of all the articles you have created. ShahidTalk2me 22:15, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
You have to type your username. ShahidTalk2me 10:18, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Well in this link I provided. See all th articles I have created. It's a list. [2]. ShahidTalk2me 10:31, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
I have created 109 articles LOL ShahidTalk2me 10:32, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Here you can find many useful links, among them, "Created articles list." Did you find your list? ShahidTalk2me 10:49, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Weird... :Here you can see different links. Click "Created articles links" and type your username... If it doesn't work, I really don't know... It must be because of the huge amount of articles you have created, so it might take a couple of minutes. ShahidTalk2me 11:29, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
mmm that's a shame, I had hoped to see a braglist..... Anyway, yup I agree. Also, the images is amazing :) Regards, ShahidTalk2me 11:40, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
OMG the list is endless!! ShahidTalk2me 12:26, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Maps

Hi again, here are three of the locator maps you asked - I haven't replaced the existing maps with them... I sort of feel like I have a CoI here :) I'll do the Canadian maps during the weekend.

Rather annoyingly, it seems like my desktop computer is dying. If I'm lucky, it's just the cables or mobo. I don't feel lucky, though. Better if I don't boot it again, untill I can bolt the hard disks into some other computer and check whether they are ok. If it had lasted just a few more weeks, I would have had a new computer ready, but no... Ah well, Mister Murphy is working hard! Cheers, – Sadalmelik (talk) 20:10, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, it looks like I have the same border data than was used for Image:Niger arrondissements.png, so it should be up-to-date. What you have in mind? There seems to be some maps in the articles already. At the moment, I cannot do topographical maps, as I stored the SRTM data in that stricken computer. – Sadalmelik (talk) 20:15, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
No, I have the border data here in my laptop, so I can do simple maps (but not maps like Image:Niger Topography.png). I doubt I can make significantly nicer maps than the existing ones, but I'll do one or two tests and you can be the judge. Cheers, – Sadalmelik (talk) 20:35, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Hmm, if they have changed the borders too, then the data I have for Niger is likely old (which is quite a common problem when working with free data sets like I do). One United Nations web site [3] actually claims the borders were changed in May 2007. In that case I certainly do not have the current borders -- sorry! SALB has one set for Niger, and that's for the period of January 2000-May 2007 - nothing later.
I still need to finish Botswana (or is it Setswana?) villages. After that... at least Mozambique held census last year, and I suppose the results should be in in not so distant future. The old census data was available in the net, though I never could manage to download it. Will be interesting to see how much of their new data they will make available. I might even try to contact them directly (especially if downloading has not improved). We'll see :) – Sadalmelik (talk) 21:00, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Looks like there is some confusion over how many districts Burma has. Statoids lists 64[4], some sources apparently claim 63. The data I have shows 62... It also lists 5 districts in Rakhine State just like statoids do, which is one more than Districts of Burma does here (the difference being Buthidaung). The data I have is probably not up-to-date -- again! – Sadalmelik (talk) 09:09, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] characters

Yes, good point. I don't mind if you can figure out a better format but the previous version, you made (which I reverted) had the henchmen and allies in order of the films. (Dr. No, FRWL, GF, THB ...) So that is exactly the point. If it was by novels and films, it would go (Casino Royale, LALD, ... until last novel then, first non original film up to DAD).  The Windler talk  21:22, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

It's not really that confusing, its just different and we should all be able to deal with change. Before you revert it, ask on the project what others think. If theres not any opposition then change it. I don't really mind, but would prefer it as it is now. Also, can you please add <br clear=all>to the top of the discussions. The talk page is really bad.  The Windler talk  06:37, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

I think I already became a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Museum. :) I nominated the museum to WP:DYK but it could be expanded more on the building and facilities which I have to translate from Korean sources though.--Appletrees (talk) 22:01, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ahhh Blofeld...

Greetings from your past! I left a note on IceShark7's page as s/he seemed to be the one doing this, but I see now that YOU are the mastermind behind the film list articles...why am I not surprised! I respectfully request that folks who create or revise such lists use the {{inc-video}} template rather than {{incomplete list}}, {{listdev}} etc. This will automatically place an article in Cat:Incomplete film, television, or video lists without having to manually add the category, as well as removing it from the plain vanilla Cat:Incomplete lists, which currently contains over 8,000 items. Cheers! Her Pegship (tis herself) 22:14, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tempting the Indonesian volcanoes?

Boy you have nerve to go and rearrange all that Indonesian material - growing hair by accident and need it singed? Hope you saw my moniker and remains of grey hair on some of the category talk pages - presume there is a good precedent for all the rearrangement? Wow - maybe you need a lava wakeup drink or perhaps a lahar from Mount Merapi my most favorite volcano? Trust your hair and sense of humour are still intact - cheers from one of the few remaining Indonesian project watchers - SatuSuro 12:46, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Geeze you are in luck - normally changes like that bring out the rottweilers and youd be faced with the rusty owen machine gun with the faulty trigger mechanism and staring at the prospect of a 2 week wait for comment at the Indonesian project noticeboard before you made more than one more step, and probable recersion of all changes on the basis of no consult with the project first - wow the issues of hair would have a very horrible smell and the rust in the owen would be slipping SatuSuro 12:54, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

mAssive changes like that to part of the structural integrity of the categories and the actual indonesian project could possibly require a sense of oooh there is a WP Indonesia and Maybe its worht speaking on the noticeboard about the change - we do bite when jumped on and we do negotiate when talked with - maybe the owen gun is a bit too slight - perhaps I should revert to the thompson and try some javanese swear words that are not translateable and say things about your mother and grandmother and the previous or later 4 generations either direction - there is a project, there is a noticeboard, and a sort of warning/explanation and or sense that there might be someone left at the project (unless they forgot the last grenade had a pin before they left) I would suspect that even a smidgeon of a comment would have been very useful - bit like those guys who grow the hair long on oneside and grease it all over to make up for the lack elsewhere on the skull -hmmm SatuSuro 13:03, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

thats a very tricky question which i will not answer on wiki :( - however seeing i only have talk pages to share such intimate knowledge about the intestines and bowel movements of the indonesian project english - i would have thought even a retrospective comment to explain what has happened at the noticebaord -(this has nothing to do with own as much as you own your user page lava - it is all given - by huey (as in send her down huey) but then that is an australian joke) would be sort of polite - we have tried at times to fend off invasions into indonesian territory of every sort imaginable - nothing to do with own but consistency and integiry of the project of potentially a million problems and issues that i will not delve into here unless you really want weak jokes for the next 6 hours - cheers, the trigger has broken i think, ok its scrounging for the luger and kalashnikov in the back cupboard SatuSuro 13:10, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Explanation please - at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Indonesia-related_topics_notice_board - for the sake of old times and our hair - cheers SatuSuro 13:15, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Even if its dead in the water (the project - apart from a few left oever not left yet eds) - I have memories of one of our departed editors spending a vast amount of time setting up the admin divisions articles - it is possiblthat you are conflating things with the new category that shows perhaps a limited understanding of the Indonesian administration of urban and residential space? perhaps? am i wrong? you can tell me the difference between a kampung a kecamatan and a kabupaten? SatuSuro 13:20, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

OK thanks for that, I'll throw the armoury out and get the wine bottle out - your choice sir - red, or is it shaken with the olive or the cheese? SatuSuro 13:22, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

You can throw the wine at me and some various swear words in the languages of your choice and I will like the emperor bow in silence - My apologies I now realise I had read your changes the wrong way (it can be difficult to scan and appreciate the number of changes with an aged brain such as mine) - thanks for your tolerance of my attempt at humour and i will quietly exit left and fart quietly into the night - the invasions are usually conducted in manners that suggest a limited understanding of local context - however I sit corrected - you are indeed working from the good work of one of our many lated departeds - may he rest in pieces wherever - cheers SatuSuro 13:33, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

One of the biggest problems for the WP Indonesia project is the myriad of place stubs with little or no RS, V, N or reasonable point of existence already - apart from being places - it is indeed a problem that exists in larger numbers than what you might add - you may be indeed compounding a problem that the project has - but hey enjoy - the more the merrier - maybe we need the dancing girls, i think the guns on the floor and the wine thrown around - we might need something more as the vast array os stubs about named places in indonesia exceed the known limits of alcohol, guns or minesweepers that exist in indonesia - cheers SatuSuro 13:39, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

If you could only email me sometime I might offer some useful info and not blot your talk page so much - but with the wikipedia talk page there are just some things that are probably as bad as estonian or latvian swearwords to the unititiated - cheers SatuSuro 13:43, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Because of my hair problem and my age i trust online sources less than i do most knowledge that claims any authenticity on 80% of web sources - as a consequence for my Australian and Indonesian work I tend to rely on printed material as much as I do because also of my academic background in history and anthropology - indonesian web based material is extraordinarily unreliable and not what i would call secure or authentic information - so good for you that you have that sort of optimism - hey if you have had experiance on the other continents of places with stubs galore - bring on the dancing girls cos you gonna find lote of places with nothing but a coord in indonesia - now what did i do with my toupee SatuSuro 13:54, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Niger subdivisions

I've suspected this for some time, but only yesterday did I fing reprints for the Journal officiel and some development reports which make clear the names changed between 2004-2006 (which explains why the US State dept and FR. Wiki have different names.

7 Departments are renamed Regions 36 Arrondissements are renamed Departments (confusingly) And the communes are devided into Communes, Urban Communes, Rural Communes, and Administrative Posts.

Any help with this is much appricieated.

T L Miles (talk) 15:48, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Brilliant! I really didn't want to do this, but once I found out what happened, my wiki-holicism was nagging at me. I'm out for coffee and smokes (my typing is worse than usual because of this), but I'll set to when I get back. I've so far done Table_of_administrative_country_subdivisions_by_country and the three Niger articles. With maps I've just piped the new name on the old link, so thse eventually must be changed. Niger is very poor with putting official docs on the web, but I found the text of the three commune renaming laws, which I'll give you the links for. And I'll send a letter to the Niger consulate to the UN to update their website ;).T L Miles (talk) 16:01, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Damnatable (paid) work has cropped up, so I'm not going to get back to this till tonight or tomorrow. In the interim, I've created a page with all my refs User:T L Miles/stuff/Niger Administration. I'll rip out the list of Regions with #s of subdvisions and type (down to the types of commune) and the list of the different communes by type and chief place. I can then map that list to Departments. There's a reference that villages are also created withing these communes ("Quaters" in Commnunes Urbain) but I haven't the vaguest clue of how to get such a list.

The creation of seperate Department and Commune entries is quite correct: thanks for doing this. I'll set to work fleshing these out as I can. Best, T L Miles (talk) 18:50, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] More recatting

I'll get on some of those later this evening, once I'm home with AWB.

What's that you say? Never won a barnstar? Tsk, tsk...we must remedy that. I'll see what I can do. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:35, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh, I am glad to hear that. I was starting to wonder why nobody noticed anything you do, and yet I've ended up with 11 barnstars...(What, me brag? Nonsense.)--User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:47, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Dangriga

Your changes to Dangriga introduced an inaccurate map, which placed Dangriga far north of where it actually is (in Stann Creek District) and very close to Belize City, which is in another district of the country entirely (Belize District). http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/americas/belize_pol_03.jpg shows Dangriga's actual location. A mistake, I assume? DO56 (talk) 19:17, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Your Togolese maps list "location in Indonesia" under the map...just letting ya know. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:18, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Can't say, as I've never been. :) --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:21, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Burma

Well, you're off to a pretty good start. I'll try and help some this evening, once I'm home, so long as I'm not too exhausted. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 15:22, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Burma geo stubs

Pretty much, as I already proposed upmerged templates for all the states (which I haven't go 'round to creating yet, oops). Alai (talk) 18:54, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

I've created the remaining 13 subdivisional templates, 12 of them upmerged. As PWB category code seems to be playing up at the moment, I'm having no luck with re-sorting them by bot, so that may have to wait until the next db dump. Alai (talk) 01:22, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm aware of how the categories are organised. I don't use AWB these days unless I can possibly help it (and my bot's never used it). Alai (talk) 15:06, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Norwegian municipalities

Hoy! Please do not replace the infobox like you did on Bergen. The generic infobox you added holds less of the Norwegian-specific information rendring the box less relevant. Plus that you have to add all of the fields manually for each article (for example the field |subdivision_type1 = [[Counties of Norway|County]]), which makes it pointless to even use a template there – we could just as well use plain wikitext. The right way to go about to make changes like this is the change the specific template (Template:Infobox Kommune) into using the generic one (Template:Infobox Settlement). But if I were you I wouldn't go about doing that before it has been Template talk:Infobox Kommune discussed first (or you'll probably just end up getting reverted)... Jon Harald Søby (talk) 22:01, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

PLease see my conversation with User talk:Aqwis. PLease remember that most non-Norwegians have no idea where these cities are in Norway and it is important to get some standardization on wikipedia. NOw if ALL of the info is copied to the standard box I don't see why it is a problem ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 22:08, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I've seen the conversation with Aqwis. I see a problem with this standardization; the infobox you're pasting has tons of contents that is not used at all, only cluttering up the edit screen. Most of it is probably removable, but using only the relevant fields of the Kommune infobox is a lot easier. My suggestion about just changing Template:Infobox Kommune will also make things a lot easier for you. Instead of changing the infobox on 400+ articles (which you would have to do in order to fully standardize; if you only do a few, things will end up worse than when you started, I think you will agree with me on that), you just change that one infobox into using the other, and it will be done once and for all. (Believe me, I've done that a lot of times on the Norwegian Wikipedia.) Jon Harald Søby (talk) 22:14, 3 May 2008 (UTC)
Well of course the contents not used are naturally removed!!! That isn't a problem . Naturally all the extra paramters that aren't used would be completely removed. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 22:16, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

an image which I think is beautiful!! Happy birthday!!!!

BEST of wishes to you my dear friend Blofeld!!! I hope you have a delightful birthday and I wish you the best of luck in everything you do!! With best wsihes and best regards, ShahidTalk2me 11:53, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Yeh, time speeds and we are growing LOL!!! I'm happy you are doing well... I'm always watching this article, don't worry, I'll revert if someone removes the image. ShahidTalk2me 12:13, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Ha ha ha I liked the recovery rooms LOL ShahidTalk2me 13:42, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
You know what I mostly think now? What the fate of Zinta's FAC will be... I messaged Tony yesterday, asking him to have another look and chack whether his comments have been addressed... but he seems to be quite reluctant to do so... ShahidTalk2me 13:54, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Well done! ShahidTalk2me 15:00, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Congratulations big guy! Of the two images, I think the one showing the local and national maps works better, as it gives a better indication as to the location for people who don't know the area very well. Unfortunately, because I personally think esthetically the other one looks better. Oh, well. But it probably shouldn't be a major concern for you today. You've more than earned the right to have a day off and play with the cats, piranhas, and whatever for a while. John Carter (talk) 15:34, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
WOW that's great... How many edits have you hit today LOL? I think there is no reaon for you not to become an admin. Really... ShahidTalk2me 20:23, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Adding my good wishes onto the pile - happy bird-day, you. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:47, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeh... Reverting vandalism on different articles... It's great to range a bit at times, forgetting about creating articles and getting upset that some editor does not want to come and check the FAC and see if his comments have been finally addressed. ShahidTalk2me 16:53, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
I'd had a different view of it before. I thought we're here to help each other, to collaborate and try to work and make the best to help it get promoted. I don't mind people opposing. It's fine by me. But what actually does sadden me is that people don't want it to get promoted without reason, and it's not nice. I did my best to address one editor's comments, and he doesn't even bother to come back and check that, as the FAC instructions say. ShahidTalk2me 17:19, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
I have. It does, especially when it comes to Tony, who is a regular FA reviewer. ShahidTalk2me 17:34, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
What according to you sounds better?
"Zinta, who describes herself as a tomboy as a child, ..."
"Zinta, a self-confessed tomboy earlier in life, ..."
ShahidTalk2me 17:36, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
No huh, I mean, which one sounds better. An editor has copyedited it, and I don't which sentence sounds better. What do you say? ShahidTalk2me 19:13, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Hey thanks but no she was not recognised with chnaging the image for SN and KANK. It's wrong -- and the word diversity will freak some editors out. It's better to leave the tone consistent. ShahidTalk2me 20:46, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
I liked that one: "has emphasized her father's military background as having a lasting impression on how family life was conducted, asserting the importance of discipline and punctuality to the children."
But this one was funny!! "20 minutes of screen time, something exceptionally long for a Hindi film debut." - LOL -- 20 minutes is short!!! LOL!
There are some very calculated sentences, which shouldn't be changed. For example - one word should never come twice in a sentence, or in two attached sentences. "Although", "but" can be condidered, as one reviewer has said - OR. For example, "Although she earned a degree, she became a model..." / "her father was an officer, but died..." - why but? That's the problem with Wikipedia.
I will not add the images as of now, although I think it's unfair.
One editor, Scartol, has copyedited the article, and I think, in terms of prose, the article is good, but that's not the case. The case is the RSness, reviewers who don't get back, images. That's what upsets me. ShahidTalk2me 21:31, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
I think everybody will find 20 minutes short. No need to explain. ShahidTalk2me 21:36, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
It's a joke. We are talking about a twenty minute role. Why should it be confusing? Well, if someone questions it I'll add your sentence with "short". ShahidTalk2me 21:43, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Is "just" encyclopedic? I would change it to only. ? ShahidTalk2me 21:44, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
So yes or no? ShahidTalk2me 21:48, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
You know Tony himself admtted that the article is written well in general. It's just that his concerns were minor... Also, I'm happy he had no problems with the tone. The article is well balanced in terms of reviews, comments and general description. Yes, she mostly received mostly positive reviews for her performances, but it's a fact, and we don't have to conceal them LOL! The copyeditor, who is an English teacher did some good job, and it looks good, but Tony is still yet to come. ShahidTalk2me 22:12, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
You may have a heavy British accent aren't you? But why are you using American english in your spelling? ShahidTalk2me 22:14, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeh it was. ShahidTalk2me 12:16, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
I don't really know, and I don't care... IMO, the article looks great and written well... I've worked very hard, and nobody can take it from me. ShahidTalk2me 12:28, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
It does upset me of course, for the simple fact that it is a well researched, comprehensive, sourced, detailed, well written article, but I'm tired. As you know I'm taking a wikibreak in a couple of weeks. So I think I've definitely done my best. ShahidTalk2me 12:42, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
In a couple of weeks... I'm very busy in real life. ShahidTalk2me 12:45, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey, you're a birthday boy today. What a great Sunday too. Yeah, I saw your contributions which are all impressive. You deserve as many Wiki awards as possible. The fish market is also good one and I will implement it later day. You indeed encourage me to make more lists concerning my country. I lived in Seoul for a while but moved to other place. Anyway have a great day today! --Appletrees (talk) 16:04, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Phuang malai garlands for luck on your birthday
Phuang malai garlands for luck on your birthday

Not sure, I guess I just never sign up for wikiprojects and prefer to lurk. Happy birthday btw! I've been working on Cambodia articles lately and have seen several images uploaded by you that have suspect CC licenses, e.g. Image:KampongChhnang2.jpg and Image:Kampong Chhnang1.jpg. Do you know the people who run these websites? Why are you saying they're under a free license? I think they probably need to be deleted.... Mangostar (talk) 22:18, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

I could do more province maps but they really should be done as SVGs, and I'm crap at inkscape. Maybe we could ask at WP:GL? Those images really need OTRS tickets. I am skeptical that anyone asked permission to use them, as some of the sites don't even have contact information on them. Soon I will go through these images and nominate the ones without OTRS stuff for deletion. Mangostar (talk) 20:22, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:Mutiny on the Bounty1935.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Mutiny on the Bounty1935.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. [edit] Thailand moves

I can't see why you would be blocked from carrying out the moves. What is it that you see which indicates that you are prevented from making such a move? John Carter (talk) 15:14, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

I just moved the page in question. All that I had to do was indicate that the existing page of that name was to be deleted to allow the other page to move there. That appeared toward the bottom of the first page that appeared after I first requested the move. Sorry that I can't remember what life was like without the buttons, but I think you should be able to do the same. If you can't, let me know. John Carter (talk) 15:58, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Just to clarify, when you hit the "move" tab (do you have that? I forget) you'd see a screen like this. When you tell it to move, you then see this. After checking the boxes for moving the associated talk page and yes, delete the page, the page should move. Like I said, though, I forget if the move tab is available to you plebes. ;) Do you have a "move" tab at the top of the screen near the edit tab?

[edit] Adminship?

Well, if you wanted to be a candidate, there are supposed to be too few right now. You might even be able to get a few admittedly drunk and/or incompetent admins to nominate you. I like beer. John Carter (talk) 16:17, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, remember, you do have to formally request to be an admin first. Having said that, I don't think it likely that you'd get much significant opposition. John Carter (talk) 17:15, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
You're going to be asked the questions in any event, because whatever people say they want to be admins for, people are going to want to know that you know how to use the tools you're given, even if you never intend to use them. But you very easily could do what I did, and when you're asked "why do you want to be an admin?" specificy that you want to be an admin to be able to perform only certain tasks, and that except in extreme situations you don't intend to perform many/most of the other tasks. The questions will still be asked anyway, primarily so people know what you do and don't know, but I don't think as much emphasis will be laid on the answers if you indicate like I did that you only want to be an admin for certain functions. John Carter (talk) 17:26, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Zinta

Agreed on all points. FWIW, I already noted on the FAC page that Murphy contains two images of roughly the same quality and description. I can see removing the longer, yellow outfit picture, because it doesn't really describe either the character or film much, but the other two struck me as both being worthy of inclusion. Let's see what Black Kite says in response. John Carter (talk) 20:56, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome. I'm a Miss indeed. Oh wow, I didn't travel internationally much as a child but we traveled throughout the US. Then I went to Spain in high school on an exchange, London during uni to visit a friend and moved to Japan after graduation. Lived there and traveled to South Korea, Australia, Hawaii and Singapore. Then studied in Prague, lived in Australia with travels to Fiji 0-- back to Japan and then studied last June in Prague again with trips to Switzerland, Germany, Poland and Italy. Thanks for uploading Image:Abdus salam.gif. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

[edit] 100 articles in the morning!

Just wow! Man, you're a true asset for Wikipedia. I hardly manage myself creating three or four stubs in this morning. I started making market related articles, so I feel like I become working for a travel agency. :) (landmark and big markets in South Korea are pretty much missing though) Members of Greece and Thailand projects gotta thank you and give an award!!!! As for the hook for DYK, it seems little long, you might cut down a little bit. Anyway the article looks pretty good. Keep up the good work!--Appletrees (talk) 14:11, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AN/I

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I actually tried to make the point that a) it is quite normal for you to create a large number of stubs in a relatively short time and b) that you normally work together with other editors that do flesh out those stubs. That comment was meant to be positive. As far as museums are concerned I cannot make any statement about notability but my recommendation was to look at those articles in a few weeks time to avoid any rash deletions - attempts thereof have been made in the past wasting everybody's time in the process. You might notice that when I do have the time to do newpage patrol I make a special effort to clear your creations as patrolled (see the quicklink on my userpage). Happy editing. Think it would be possible to get the names of some of the towns that were demolished in the cyclone? Perhaps some of them could be added to the article on the storm. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:07, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Believe it or not, I added the wikilink to the cyclone in the article about the division. Doesn't seem like anybody's added anything else to it since. Kind of frightening; 10,000 dead, and the only thing people work on is the article about the cyclone itself. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 21:13, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Boala Department, and it appears to be very similar to another wikipedia page: Bouroum Department. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot (talk) 20:00, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hey

Yeh things are going well... There are no concerns regarding prose, which is pretty solid, but punctuation. Do you have some comments or reservations regarding the prose in some parts of the article? Please tell me first so that I can clarify that.

After the FAC, I'll have to expand the part of "Zinta narrowly escaped death twice in late 2004. The first occurred after an explosion at a Temptation concert in Colombo, Sri Lanka; the second occurred during the Indian Ocean earthquake."

I'm now a bit concerned about commas, where they should and shouldn't be. I asked the reviewer to give some additional examples. As of now I'm still surprised that a strict editor like Tony has withdrawn his oppose. How are you? ShahidTalk2me 20:43, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks Blof. Do you see some problematic sentences in the article right now? If you do, please let me know. Oh, and as someone who has good writing skills, I think you can also dedicate your time to FA reviewing. What do you say? ;) ShahidTalk2me 20:51, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh now it has. Scartol has copyedited the article, his comments have been addressed, also with you doing copyedits etc., it has improved further. Looks nice. We'll have to be careful of making drastic changes. Let's see what happens with Laser's oppose. The prose is good; the puctuation is what worries me now. Regards, ShahidTalk2me 20:54, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Hey, I must have disagreed with the change of this "After the release of this film, Zinta was recognised for her versatility as an actress;[2][12] commended for work portraying a wide range of characters in Kya Kehna, Sangharsh and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke,[2] and credited with establishing a new image for leading actresses in Bollywood.[3][24][25]" which became a bit confusing, one source was removed and displyed as "error", and "recognized" is American English. ShahidTalk2me 21:53, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
It was already discussed and my analysis on the talk page is a good proofto that. It was the most successful period of her career in terms of critical reception. Three copyeditors worked on this sentence so I think it finally looks good.
Also, The Armaan bit -- she was not praised in particular because of the award nominations, but the critics praised her in particular. That's why the award bit has to come in the.
As for not reverting, I'm sorry but whenever I feel a mistake is done and something is incorrect I'm modifying it -- because the article is a FAC and many eyes may be looking at it. Thanks for the help. ShahidTalk2me 22:04, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
I think it was not nice of you rollbacking my edits as if they were vandalism. ShahidTalk2me 22:07, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
What? Why do you tell me that you're a good writer? that you have been part of FACs? Why are you clrifying as if we don't even know each other? You're not as good as other copyeditors. You are one of the best!!! I really mean that. The problem is that many things have happened since you left it. There is a reason to almost everything. For example "Garner" should not be used as per Tony. That's why I have to clarify everything. And that's why I asked you to comment first and then make that, because it can get misleading. You have to understand that as a FAC, many eyes are looking at it, and whenever I feel a mistake is done and something is incorrect I must modify it. ShahidTalk2me 22:12, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
I generally think an entire copyedit should not be done right now (unless specific points are questioned in FAC), because it can be the greatest copyedit in the world, yet someone can consider it a horrible article because of one word here, two words there, a comma missing here, an extra comma there. Many reviewers oppose articles because of minor concerns, that's the nature of Wikipedia.
For example, the tomboy bit was problematic. You rewrote it brilliantly "has emphasised her father's military background as having a lasting impression on how family life was conducted, asserting the importance of discipline and punctuality to the children" - but someone has since commented on it. That's what I mean. We should mainly work on points which are questioned.
During FAC we cannot get into constant changes, removals or additions, because you never know if someone is reading the article, and wonders why it's inconsistent. That was the problem with the first copyeditor too. We'll have to get there only for matters of punctuation as of now, not copyediting. I hope you will help me with the Kal Ho Naa Ho article though when I expand it.
I think you should not get offended. I see no problem in me modifying your copyedits. IMO this is what can be easily called a collaborative work, of course when nobody is offended. For example, see this version of yours, and check ref number 2 (error). Another thing - the problem was not with clons, but mainly the use of commas.
As you know, I was the only one who through all these months has heard different comments and concerns in Peer reviews, on the talk page, in noticeboards, on my talk page. Every editor has his concerns, and it was thrown at my face, so I had to collect all those concerns, comments and suggestions (which often contradicted each other) in my head, combine and implement them. The previous copyeditor also made some mistakes of accuracy of info, so I had to correct them. Regards, ShahidTalk2me 22:47, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Hey I don't know why you sent Tony a message -- he has struck his oppose. ShahidTalk2me 07:40, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
I know buddy... I know how busy you are, and that you are most willing to help me and this article. But please understand how stressed I am of different critical reactions at FAC. That's why I asked you to tell me first what your concerns are, so that we can make it better, without edit conflicts. If there is something that strikes you as a bit odd, tell me, and we'll try to improve that. But it's wrong from you to think that I don't trust you. In fact, I was running to you everytime I had a problem with this article. ShahidTalk2me 08:33, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Well according to me it's great that you have concerns here. But as you see it's complicated. So it's btter to discuss itfirst.
After the release of this film, Zinta was recognised for her versatility as an actress; commended for work portraying a wide range of characters in Kya Kehna, Sangharsh and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke,[2] and credited with establishing a new image for leading actresses in Bollywood.
How do you think we can change it? I personally think the version you wrote was also complicated. Let's start from here. Maybe:
After the release of this film, Zinta was often recognised for her versatility as an actress. Critics attributed her characters in Kya Kehna, Sangharsh and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, as/to establishing a new image for leading actresses in Bollywood.
? ShahidTalk2me 08:45, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Maybe we can also remove " in Kya Kehna, Sangharsh and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke" so that we can shorten it up and make it clearer. ShahidTalk2me 08:49, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
"The film, which relates the love story of an Indian officer and a Pakistani woman, received." You removed the second comma. Is that right? Because the clause in between looks like not being a clause, but a part of the sentence. It makes the word "received" refer to the "Indian officer and a Pakistani woman", as if they "received" significant esponse LOL ShahidTalk2me 08:54, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
"After the release of this film, Zinta was often recognised for her versatility as an actress. Critics attributed her characters in Kya Kehna, Sangharsh and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, as/to establishing a new image for leading actresses in Bollywood."
ShahidTalk2me 09:04, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Well I was asked to add Western reviews. Here's one from Variety. I'll add soe review. As of now I'm worried for this sentence. So what do you think about
"After the release of this film, Zinta was often recognised for her versatility as an actress. Critics attributed her characters in Kya Kehna, Sangharsh and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, as/to establishing a new image for leading actresses in Bollywood."
? ShahidTalk2me 09:15, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Ok let me please consult someone else. As you see, two opinions are not sufficient. The more editors giving their opinions - the better. ShahidTalk2me 09:23, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Well I think it's one of the few sentences which need to be rewritten. Please let me do that in the best way so that I can be relaxed after that. I'll turn to John first. ShahidTalk2me 09:30, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
I gave him the general example of rewriting it. He usually has some more ideas. We'll see what he says, if he has new ideas, we both will give our opinions. As of now, we'll leave it like that. ShahidTalk2me 09:36, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
It's simple -- we say she was not well received. Reasons:
A) Taran is mentioned too much. (I'll now change a review).
B) She had a SMALL role so there is no need to say what the critical reaction was. So this quote is defnitely unneeded.
C) The film is non-notable in her career and shouldn't have been mentioned at all. Only that she was not well received and that it was complete disaster made me add it in order to address tone and make it balanced and neutral. ShahidTalk2me 09:40, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Hahaha Blof you must understand that you can do nothing when an actor is good at what he does. She has received mostly positive reviews. Every Indian contributor from Dwaipayanc to Pa7 will agree with on that. Did you already forget the noticeboard? Even Amarrg agreed that the reviews on the page are fine. Nobody questioned the article's neutrality. There is one very negative review for Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. You can see my analysis on the talk page. We are here to give reviews which will represent the majority view, which will be representative of the general critical reaction, so you see that most of her roles were generally received well. ShahidTalk2me 09:49, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

"I'm really not getting the impression here you think much of my ideas" - why? Wasn't the above clarification good? No I really wonder if you forgot the notiboard section amar opened. Have you? Dwaipayanc was busy in real life, you were not interested looking at the article. I was left alone. I had to do everything alone. I started a long analysis on the talk page, looking for reviews in order to assure that the reviews on the article are not POV but facts, they are representative, they represent the view of all the critics who wrote about her performance in this film or another. Amar agreed that it was a good analysis. Now on the FAC nobody even questions the neutrality of the article even not strict editors like Tony. You have types "strong support", if you are not complete with it and think the article does not deserve this so called recognition of FA, please change it to oppose, or strong oppose, I will never blame you for that. But please don't make me feel good I'm trying to clarify and explain to you everything because after all you hadn't looked at the article for almost half a year and much things have happened since. It saddens that you think that I don't consider your opinions. ShahidTalk2me 10:04, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
"She lent her support to the cause of women's empowerment,[67] and promoting blood donation." - shouldn't it be "promoted"? And what with the comma? Does it have to remain? ShahidTalk2me 10:09, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
You're misunderstood. I say at the time of the noticeboard you didn't want to look at the article because you said after your break you wouldn't work on it. I talked only about that in regard to the reviews. As a matter of fact, you yourself say I was coming to you for help and I also mentioned it in this section above. So how can you say that you ideas do not interest me. Doesn't it contradict this? Wasn't I always very praising your work on Bollywood and Preity Zinta as well? I think this is going nowhere. Let's stick to the conent only. ShahidTalk2me 10:22, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
MoS problem - "Zinta reacted angrily at hearing these rumours reported in the national news and confronted journalists and criticised their consuct. A sentence conducted by two "and"s -- sounds poorly. ShahidTalk2me 10:43, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
WOW!!!! That's what I was always thinking about this quote. It's just a kind of a proverb ain't it? I think we can insert it into a cquote template... Well but I'm not sure. Thanks for the help. ShahidTalk2me 10:52, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
"I'm amazed how closely you care about every tiny detail in this article." now I think you can understand why I'm so worried about everything related. After one and a half of ongoing work, disappointments, and a recent FAC, it's hard to behave this way don't you think? ShahidTalk2me 10:56, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeh well here we cannot be consistent throughout because each paragraph should discuss a new topic, unless the topic is short eg the 2005 para which includes two films. 2007 is another thing. She had on the one hand the flop Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, her first role which was mostly criticised. On the other hand, that year so her turning her career professionally, starting working in art cinema. So I think these paras shouldn't be merged into one. Jolie is a great example of that. ShahidTalk2me 11:22, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
And thanks for the so kind words. I really appreciate your efforts. Thanks again, ShahidTalk2me 11:26, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Well I have an image of hers in one of her stage shows, which can be added. The image is free and is already on commons, but seems a bit over the top. Don't you think? ShahidTalk2me 11:32, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Well yes beautiful images but too widened. Also, the on the page which shows her crying with Khan on the bidge in New York is INO beautiful too. You can also see this one which I liked but it is too stretched as well. ShahidTalk2me 11:38, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Well I don't know if these will look good in an encyclopedia article mmm... Don't you like the one on the article where she cries with Khan on the bridge? It's an exciting scene.. And what do you think about this one, I know it cannot be cropped but just interesting what you think. ShahidTalk2me 11:48, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Why is the image you cropped so dark? ShahidTalk2me 12:01, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Well I preferred the previous one which shows them crying on the bridge in a particularly dramatic scene. What about the tear? You can do nothing with it? ShahidTalk2me 12:13, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeh but as I said for acritical commentary we need everything, style, mood, genre, location, everything which is discussed in the article. And in this one, the cation is larger than the image itself LOL !!!! ShahidTalk2me 12:43, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh no man this image is hugee and she looks big and fat!! Why have you reupload if we have image size parameter LOL? ShahidTalk2me 12:45, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm quick am I not? LOL!!! ShahidTalk2me 12:47, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Again, I think the image is beautiful as an image, but it's not for the page. Also as I said, in the previous one we see everything which is needed. ShahidTalk2me 12:54, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
And could you please delete this huge image preityzinta2 which is awful because it creates many confusions now. ShahidTalk2me 12:55, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
HAHAHAHAHAH LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 HAHA!!!! I can't stop LOL!!
Don't you dare calling me Doris. It's WP:POV!! Stop spreading POV all over. ShahidTalk2me 13:02, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! How dare you? I'm Shahid! Mister Shahid for you!! Please see WP:LEAD and Wikipedia WP:OTHERCRAPEXISTS -- the fact that others are called this way, doesn't mean that I have too. Also see WP:CITE, unless you support the claim that I'm an old man, you arein violation LOL!! ShahidTalk2me 13:07, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Well what about readding the KANK image? It illustrates perfectly her role as a modern woman, it has importance, colour. ShahidTalk2me 13:13, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
There's a problem, appearances at award ceremonies are considered media appearances, they have nothing to do with her career. ShahidTalk2me 13:19, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
That's funny. Again - another injustice. Diane Keaton can have four images and Zinta cannot? ShahidTalk2me 13:22, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
The Last Lear? How can we add this image? It has not been officially released even, so we don't know how it affects Preity's career. The Kal Ho Naa Ho, which I still think doesn't go well there, according to the FA reviewer, should come right next to the paragraph.
Now, if you can have three images why can't you add the beautiful KANK image? Bollywood's biggest hit at the overseas market ever! It shows her perfectly in her role of a modern magazine editor, though you can find other KANK images. ShahidTalk2me 13:35, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

From KANK? ShahidTalk2me 13:39, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Images

A) I think the previous KHNH image looks better, as I said thousand time -- we see New York and the bridge, we see tearjerker, we see the leading pair, we see much drama, Zinta crying, everything we discuss in the text is illustrated in the image.
B) I want the KANK image to come back. Bollywood's biggest hit overseas, the image illustrated her as being a modern Indian woman with her beautiful gold jacket I'm surprised you don't agree regarding KANK I thought you liked that image. Comments? ShahidTalk2me 14:25, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

I can't get why you are leaving unnecessary messages, as you did on this User:Black's talk page, Tony's talk page, and now the FAC. ShahidTalk2me 14:28, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

you must see her here! ShahidTalk2me 15:21, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

I think your previous description for the hero was better than the current one. ShahidTalk2me 15:33, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
No reviews are IMO not needed. For Zinta it was not an important film, because the film was mainly about Sunny Deol. ShahidTalk2me 15:51, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeh I but I think we must mention the film failed to recover its costs at the BO. ShahidTalk2me 15:56, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh you already added when I was adding... OK, now we have to write that it failed to recover its costs at the box office according to the sources you can see on the FAC. ShahidTalk2me 16:05, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
I think too much scope was given to it. I see you are quite surprised at hearing its the most expensive film LOL. I rewrote it to:
"The film, about a spy network involving terrorists and an Indian army officer starred Zinta as Reshma, a villager who falls in love with the officer and becomes part of this network. The film, involving stunts never witnessed before in the cinematic history of Bollywood, became the most expensive Hindi film of all time, but failed to recover its production costs at the box office."
Just we have to mention that it was the most expensive Hindi film up until then, because it no longer is. ShahidTalk2me 16:18, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
What do you think about:
"...the cinematic history of Bollywood, became the most expensive Hindi film of all time up until then. Despite being a major-grosser, it failed to recover its production costs at the box office."
? ShahidTalk2me 16:26, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
For the sake of neutrality I must add the word "fail" to that. ShahidTalk2me 16:27, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
What about "up until then"? It is no lonfer the most expensive film of "all-time". ShahidTalk2me 16:32, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
As I say thousand times, Wikipedia is a great thing when it comes to learning. You are not a Bollywood expert, yet you are already aware of what a high budget film in Bollywood is... Great! Well I think Dhoom. I think both Dhoom and KANK were very close but Dhoom was filmed in Brazil whereas KANK in the US. ShahidTalk2me 16:47, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Blof, isn't "ever produced at the time" a bit vague? "up until then" seems good, no? ShahidTalk2me 16:53, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
I think it's time to take a break from this article, ain't it? I'm exhauted. What about you? I guess you're too. You must be missing your regular work aren't you? We'll later discuss the images.

John seems to have some ongoing problems with some user. hrfhf... ShahidTalk2me 17:25, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Blog please don't request editors to comment on the FAC... We are doing pretty well. I know that your intention is pure, but as you said you can be lavelled as a canvasser, so it's better to do without asking editors to comment. I know you consider this editor a valuable one who can judge it fairly, but some editors can misinterpret it. Regards, ShahidTalk2me 18:46, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Well I ask you to not adopt such a tone when talking to me. You are always chacking up my edits, and I happened to do the same now. And the previous FAC turned out as a hell after editor blamed you for canvassing. I don't want the same to happen now. ShahidTalk2me 19:18, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Well I don't want to discuss it now. I'd rather concentrate on this FAC. And you better take a little break of an hour, I don't what happened to you. ShahidTalk2me 19:26, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
I haven't ordered anything. I'm now leaving. I will later readd the previous KHNH image because it looks better, and will try to do something to get the KANK image back. That's what concerns me now. ShahidTalk2me 19:35, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

That should cover the bases - the main problem is that it's required to have a FuR for each use. SkierRMH (talk) 00:09, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Gangtok

The article Gangtok is in FAR. The main problem mentioned is lack of inline citations. We've added some citations. More should be added. Also, prose may need to be improved at places. Indeed, while adding inline citations from different sources, new materials sometimes come up and can be added, too.

I have gone through the sections history, geography, climate, economy, and, civic governance. History section probably needs some more materials as well as inline citations. You can help by adding citations and materials in any section you like to. A good source that we have come across is the City Development Plan of Gangtok City. This is a collection of PDF files full of info on the city.

Thanks for asking. Yes, it would be great if you can manage some time and help improve the article, thereby saving it from demotion. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 05:29, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Zinta Images

User:Riana's method of uploading images is really complicated. First, we have to send an e-mail to the OTRS systsem, where we include the IndiaFM images licencing ticket number and the images' links. Then we upload them to Wikimedia Commons and add the "OTRS pending" tag. Since, the OTRS pending tage is there, members of the OTRS go through those images and find your e-mail. After that, they later replace the OTRS pending tag with the permissions ticket. Take a look at this. When I uploaded the Zinta image that is currently in the infobox, it looked like this, which is currently the case with some of the Zinta images. After a OTRS member went through the images, it became this. I know this is really confusing but User:Riana suggested this method as it would save time deleting all the images that weren't uploaded properly. Do you get it?? --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 17:06, 8 May 2008

The first batch of images that I uploaded were approved the next day. The second batch is taking so long.. I uploaded them last Monday, and there is still no response. :( Anyways, how you doing Blofeld!! I haven't talked to you for quite a while!! --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 17:14, 8 May 2008
I finished University around the second week of April and now I am currently working at McDonald's.. LOL.. =) It is not my dream job but nonetheless it is a good starting point as it allows you to gain experience and earn a decent amount of money!! Zinta's article is improving day by day!! Keep up the good work!! Regards --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 17:22, 8 May 2008
That was what I was saying. We should get paid for the things we do on Wikipedia. I know you would get paid a lot... LOL, ;)... OMG!! I didn't know when your birthday was. When was it?? Anyways, here's wishing you a Happy Belated Birthday!! BTW, how old are you?? I can't believe I am 19 already. It feels like yesterday when I came to Canada at the age of 9. Ten years have passed by in a blink of an eye!! --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 17:34, 8 May 2008
Life does always pass by quickly and that is why I always live life to the fullest because you never know Kal Ho Naa Ho.. (Tomorrow May or May Not Be).. LOL. Gosh!! I love that movie!! Zinta was fantastic in that movie and she deserved all the awards she got!! =) Blofeld.. have you watched any Bollywood films?? --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 17:46, 8 May 2008

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. When using certain templates on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:PAGENAME}} instead of {{PAGENAME}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. Thank you. – ThatWikiGuy (talk) 18:39, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Almost as bad as American media - all I'm hearing about right now is how our attempts at making donations are being rebuffed. And forget making it the top story on any news show...I mean, there's an election on, right? Yeah.

Hi, Blof-- The two recent big projects I've worked on were Kim Ki-young and Anna May Wong, both of which I helped up to GA status. A group of editors and I are starting to put the Wong article up through FA review, and I'd like to do the same with Kim. I started the Template:Kim Ki-young and blue-linked all the films on that, except for The Housemaid which was already there... Other than that, a little of this & that... Been maintaining the articles in my area of expertise, I've started up the occasional new article :-) I've been adding a lot of film posters to articles-- many of which had had film posters before, but which were deleted by some admin who couldn't take the time to fix the image description-- one of my favorite Wiki-gripes... For the past week or so, I've been helping out a little with Fires on the Plain (film), and I've been checking in on Wikipedia:Deletion today to help save some obviously mis-nominated pages. Looking for another big project to start on now-- I've been thinking about filling out another article in Korean cinema-- either Im Kwon-taek, Na Woon-gyu, or maybe the big article itself. [edit] oooops

Ooops...sorry I missed your messages (those were 3 or 4 messages up in my talk page, and I missed them).

Yes, hep is definitely needed for Gangtok article. So far, I have tried to add inline citations, and expanded several sections as I came across sources. I have not yet looked inthttp://en.wikipedia.org/skins-1.5/common/images/button_sig.png Your signature with timestampo the "City institution" sub-section, and "Culture" may also be expanded further. Both these headings would incorporate things that would have some Tibetan connection. Also deficient is the History section.

Please help particularly in these sections, and, in general, anywhere you wish to in the article. You can also create articles on the institutions of the city. Thanks a lot. Regards, and sorry again...--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:26, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, districts of Laos seem to be very poorly covered. Almost all are in red links.
Regarding Gangtok, yes of course there are a lot of articles that can be created. And a navigation template as well. Let alone temples, institutions, there may even be notable localities near Gangtok (and Sikkim as a whole) that lack articles.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:35, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
That would be absolutely great. The template reminds me of Template:Waters of South Asia.--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:52, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I'll take a look at what I have for Laos, perhaps I'm lucky this time. – Sadalmelik 15:49, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] New thread

Mass stubbing, recat etc count towards total edit. But 20,000 new articles is mind-boggling. I once met Raul who talked about his wish to create a huge number of significant new articles. After a few days, I saw his message in your talk page which led to that list of wikipedians by number of new articles created. And you were way ahead of others back then. This is really great. Take a bow!!

Regarding infancy of wikipedia, the problem is, as you have told, systemic bias i think. Non-English speaking nations are sometimes very poorly represented, such as the districts of Laos. Unfortunately a great deal of human resource here is wasted in debates and edit wars etc.--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:38, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Yup, that's me, Betty Crocker, baking all those cookies (lol). I signed up to give out 200 wikicookies and decided to give them to new article writers while doing New Page Patrol. I was so pleasantly surprised with the responses. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:00, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Nice work!

Laos, I've never been to but seems to have lots of great sightseeing. Your working progress really impresses me and tempts me to plan a trip!!!! (I have to save money for that though)--Appletrees (talk) 20:02, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the awesome picture The view is breathtaking and I wish go there sometime. Man, you can run a top rated travel agency. Honestly, I did not know where Laos is located, just thought somewhere in Southeast Asia. I'm getting interested in Vietnam because of the history to the contrary to that of Cambodia. Thankfully, nature of many countries in Asian still are intact from industrialization which makes them special for tourists. --Appletrees (talk) 20:19, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Yes, we're educating each other by creating or implementing articles here. Hey, by the way many Asian people want to travel Europe, because people tend to get intrigued to unfamiliar and unknown worlds? :) --Appletrees (talk) 20:38, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Sure, they're crazy about castles and château, because for most Americans, Europe is where their ancestors lived, so their enthusiasm for the historical areas is very much understandable. Funny thing about costume movies created by Hollywood these days is that when they make films set in Europe, they hire many actors from Australia, neither American nor British. Maybe because Australian accent is in the middle of the two English? Besides, even if film setting is held in France, actors try to speak in British accent, not French accent.....--Appletrees (talk) 21:02, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
You're right. The English gentleman image is very strong, so people do expect Hugh Grant-ish looking from British just like French woman image. I've only been to London areas in the UK, but will visit Wales and Scotland someday (Rossini's opera, La donna del lago is set near a loch in Scotland.) Yes, I'm completing over half of dongs in Seoul (over 350). That job is tedious, but I get to know the neighborhood anyway. --Appletrees (talk) 21:28, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I had thought Gwyneth is a British or at least her parents immigrant to the US. Oh, you seem to be a student and if you get a job in the field, I bet you can be a traveling TV show star just like the host of The Amazing Race (although the program is more like boasting how the US television has money and great sceneries are introduced a little due to the competition in hurry)--Appletrees (talk) 21:46, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I bet your assets would lead the job you want to be. I can't even imagine you're a 9-5 office worker. :) Anyway, keep up the good work!--Appletrees (talk) 21:58, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

OMG, that is quite a load of work and how did you find all the sources? Wikipedia is really getting shaped good with you!--Appletrees (talk)

Oh, you have a cute "baldy" bot enable to assist your gigantic task. :) Yeah, Wikipedia keeps growing, so eventually Africa and other places will have their own article to introduce their stories and cultures. I think some parts of Africa are in French speaking world, so if you can speak many foreign languages, you can get more info. --Appletrees (talk) 13:48, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] extra spaces and punctuation in your new pages

Hi Blofeld, In the Laos village pages you're currently creating, you have a space before the reference and an extra period at the end after the reference. Would you stop using those so they don't have to be cleaned up later? Thanks, Aleta Sing 20:43, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I have nominated Boungbale, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Boungbale. [edit] Togo bot

I don't have any bots directly at hand, I'm afraid. But it generally works to just file a request at Wikipedia:Bot requests for such tagging. John Carter (talk) 14:49, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Understood, believe me. Unfortunately, I got no clue how to go about creating a bot, as that techy stuff is beyond me. I can try to get some help, though. John Carter (talk) 14:53, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
I might wait on that until User:SatyrTN returns. He has a bot which will automatically add banners to articles in a given category tree which gets run on a regular basis. My guess is he'd probably be the one who would have the easier time of it. I am watching to see when he returns, because I have several other requests for him too. [edit] Tibet

Well, sorry if I took my anger out on you, it was only after I've cleaned up a dozen different articles where people do not know how to align images correctly, and it either leaves gigantic gaps in the text or scrunches them together. I guess seeing your edit was my boiling point after fixing other articles with the same problem over and over, and since I've never seen your edits before I simply assumed you were an amateur like the rest. Good work on the article otherwise.--Pericles of AthensTalk 20:07, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I thought that was strange as well, removing the ENTIRE history section without at least providing a small summary. I would like to contribute more, but strangely enough my university library has a limited selection of quality books on Tibet (plenty of quantity, but not quality surprisingly). I was shocked to find how little JSTOR has to offer in regards to Tibetan history articles from scholarly journals. There are a number of items available on Google Books which provided me with a significant portion of the material I used to craft Tibet during the Ming Dynasty, but even this has its limits. If only I had time to venture out to the Library of Congress! Now that would be fruitful. I'll see what I can do.--Pericles of AthensTalk 20:23, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
That's an impressive amount of articles you've created; I certainly hate seeing red links everywhere on Wikipedia, especially for critical geographic articles.--Pericles of AthensTalk 20:26, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Stubs or not, you've made that important leap into creating essential articles that you or others can expand upon in the future. As for Tibetan cultural identity and its relation to China, the scholar Elliot Sperling from Indiana University writes that the idea that Tibet is an integral and inalienable part of China was largely constructed during the 20th century when China transformed itself from an empire into a modern nation state. Before that time, Tibet was merely regarded as a feudal dependent that China had fairly loose suzerainty over.--Pericles of AthensTalk 20:42, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
History of European exploration in Tibet --> again, nice work!--Pericles of AthensTalk 20:44, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
For the info on Elliot Sperling I mentioned above, look here in the article I've created. You might find his material and others from that section useful in the main Tibet article, that is if you find space to include some of it.--Pericles of AthensTalk 20:46, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, it was a bit of work as you can tell. As for keeping the vandals at bay, I've got 446 different articles on my watchlist, so I'm in the same camp of reverting garbage on a daily basis.--Pericles of AthensTalk 20:55, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Great suggestion; I've added my name to the roster.--Pericles of AthensTalk 21:23, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Indeed. In the next few days, I'll scour what else my university library has to offer on Tibet (the books that I haven't investigated yet), and hopefully a universal text on Tibetan culture, geography, history, etc. will pop up. Cheers.--Pericles of AthensTalk 21:36, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tibet history edits

Hi Ernst! Thank you for your comments on my Talk page. I am so sorry that I have upset you with my edits on Tibet. I knew this was going to be a most difficult (and controversial) job and that I had very limited time to do it in. I was so upset that having the two articles each with very large sections on Tibetan history was leading to contradictions, confusion and far too much duplication leading to an inability for readers to follow all the additions and POV aguments which were being added to each. It really was a confusing jumble and, I judged, made it impossible for ordinary readers to get any sort of coherent picture of Tibetan history. It seemed important to me to have the vast bulk of the historical discussions available in one place where the contradictions and unnecessarily long-winded duplications would become more immediately obvious and, therefore, more easily corrected.

One of the main problems has been that it all has taken much longer than I thought - so I hadn't got back to rewriting a much more concise history section before others started working on it.

When I first copied out the history section alone of the Tibet article it filled 15 full A4 pages in Word and was a tangled mess of some excellent material mixed up with numerous contradictions and repetitions and poorly referenced POVs. I tried unsuccessfully to straighten it out and then decided the only thing to do was to remove it entirely and try my best to merge it into the History of Tibet article before coming back to write an historical précis for the main Tibet page (something I never got back to do).

I am very sorry it has not worked out as well as I had hoped and now I have to ask others to help get both articles back up to speed again. I hope, though, that the exercise has not been totally in vain. It should, at least, be easier now to see what needs to be done. I hope so.

BTW I haven't (recently anyway) edited any other sections of the Tibet article - so I'm not responsible for the state of the Intro or other sections. I agree they need a lot more work. Apologies for all the hassles. Best wishes, John Hill (talk) 22:55, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Boungbale AfD

Hi Blofeld - just saw your note on the Boungbale AfD about disambiguating identically named places in the same region. One method I've seen used before is to show a direction and distance from the nearest larger place, e.g., Boungbale (12 km northeast of Foo), Boungbale (5 km southwest of Foo). A bit crude, but it works. Grutness...wha? 01:33, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re. Tibet History

Hi buddy! Good to hear from you - and sorry I have caused you all this angst! There is certainly no need for you to apologise! This whole fuss is really my fault. I was reading the Tibet article the other day and was horrified by the size of the section on Tibetan history and the jumble and confusion and POV in it. I thought that, especially with the focus on Tibet-China relations at the moment it was really urgent to get something more coherent and accurate together in one place. I thought I could do it in the few days left before my big trip - but probably overestimated my own capabilities and hadn't counted on the stream of unannounced visitors coming to wish us a good trip (and wanting to stay for a couple of hours drinking coffee and chatting).

I really did mean to get back to writing a shorter history on the Tibet page but I was too slow off the mark and I should have decorated the site with big Under Construction warning signs and also I should have realised you would have been right on the ball as usual and warned you personally.

Anyway, from this point on - I think it should be much easier to straighten everything out. The historical notes you have added to the Tibet article are a good start - and I am grateful you have restored some of the photos.

My only suggestions are that we should now try make it as brief and punchy as possible without losing the basic flow of the history. I, for example, would like to see a bit more on the ancient kings and the establishment of the Dharma and the early Empire while separating out some of less critical material in the more recent history.

I will try to do what I can while on this trip - but it may not be much, unfortunately - and now is when large numbers of people are likely to be checking the Wikipedia for information on Tibet. Also, of course, all the material in the History of Tibet article needs to be rechecked and tidied up. Sorry to leave you such a headache! I send you my apologies once again and all best wishes and thanks for your concern and hard work. John Hill (talk) 10:27, 11 May 2008 (UTC) PS Do have a look at the long quote I have given in the History of Tibet article from the 821/2 Treaty between China and Tibet. If only something similar could be worked out again now!

Hi again, Ernst! thanks for your latest note - and do please have a look on my Talk Page for my apology (which includes a paste of my letter above). Oh, and please do read the quote from the 821/2 Treaty between Tibet and China in the History of Tibet article. I find it quite inspiring! Let's hope better days are ahead for both the Tibetan and the Chinese people - the whole world would be a better place if they could become friends once more. John Hill (talk) 10:46, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Oliver Beerhof

I was a bit hasty to do that at first, but Ghits of that exact term are little to none. I didn't want to insult your intelligence either, I've seen all the new pages you've been creating on the new pages page - it's difficult keeping up to mark them as patrolled - at least we know you're not a one-hit editor whose sole goal is to vandalise! Keep up the good work! Booglamay (talk) 11:11, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image licensing

I was looking over Image:Tristan da Cunha5.jpg to finish its move to Commons, and noticed the Flickr page for that image says, "© All rights reserved", which conflicts with the GFDL license you had indicated. Which license is correct? If the GFDL is correct, could you arrange for an update of the Flickr page? LyrlTalk C 13:04, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Mexico etc.

Haven't really had any luck with it these past few days; I haven't spent that much time close to an AWB-enabled computer. Looks like it'll rain tonight, so I should have some time then.

Thanks for the congrats - congrats yourself on getting DYK a couple days back. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:58, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

That...is a very nice shot.
I have to admit that I picked Quaife to write about primarily because I was amused by his name (not nice, I know.) Other than that, I've been trying to gain coverage for some anonymous European painters here; there are some interesting artists I've encountered that don't have any coverage. It's frightening, sometimes, the sheer scope of what's missing here. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:05, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
Africa aside, there's gobs of stuff missing in Europe and the United States, to name but two places. A bot would be great for taking care of some of the geographical tasks, though...free up time for other pursuits. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:15, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure, to be honest. I'd hope that there will be much better coverage of the Third World, and I'd like to think that some of the most dedicated editors are going to transfer their energies to other things once their WikiProjects are completed. And I think some of the gaps in art and music topics will start to be somewhat closed. What I don't forsee, without committed effort, is a lot of growth on articles that are already there. There's so much that ought to be at, or near, Featured status, but that isn't because people haven't devoted the energy to making it better. I'm guilty of this myself, to be honest. I hope it'll get better, though.
What about you? Where do you see the project in ten years? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:51, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
As I say - it depends on who gets involved, and what his chosen focus is. Look, for instance, at "cephalophore". I started it as a two-line stub a couple of years back, and look what it's become. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:12, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
It does. But that's the Saints WikiProject at work - they're awfully dedicated, and have done a good job cleaning up some of the other stuff I've cobbled together, too. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:28, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
The Danish film? Not really - just italicizing the translated title. Sorry if I stepped into anything. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 20:53, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Danish Films

It was hard not to notice your name all over the place when I started adding to the Danish cinema section... but I didn't check out your page until I was writing Inger Stender's bio today. (All those Inger Stender movies! Did you have a thing for her? I do now.) Anyway, as you noticed, I reformatted the pages to fit the side table, and I think the American Film pages are nice, but I also think that I'll wait until there are a whole lot more danish films added before reformatting in a similar style. In the meantime, I'll just keep jumping around, adding movies, bios, links and the like -- in general, just plugging away on the stuff that sparks my interest. You made a great start, and I'll continue on. CactusWriter (talk) 20:11, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

I agree wholeheartedly -- fascinating stuff to learn. And fascination is definitely the key. (Or is it addiction? Hmm... probably both). While adding films, I keep finding new names to investigate. Especially from the early years. There are a lot of forgotten names, and those early actors and directors were definitely cool. CactusWriter (talk) 20:33, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re

I say go for it!

Hey nice image above... ShahidTalk2me 10:40, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Yeh she's really beautiful! ShahidTalk2me 21:26, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
That's the case, there is a reliable source, and the reliable source is BOI. I think those editors themselves don't believe the opposite... Who would ever think that Times Online uses unreliable sources? With all due respect, the fact that Girolamo sided Sarvagnya means nothing, because, at the end of the say, he is an editor like you and me, as you very frankly stated on his discussion page. I can replace now sources, and get it promoted, but would it be fair toward all those 300 articles which cite BOI and will be destroyed if the source is removed? Was someone brave enough to question to accuracy of the information provided on the site? Does someone doubt it? I can't think only about Zinta, I have to think about all those Bollywood-related articles. This is the only source that collects all the possible Bollywood film statistics in one site. ShahidTalk2me 12:24, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Well that's what you should tell Girolamo and others, who are on good terms with you. I think you remember my dispute with Girolamo over Wikiproject back in time. ShahidTalk2me 12:33, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
That's not the case, I'm just not going to concede. Please do not replace yet. I do have very precise sources for the facts. I first want to see the final verdict. ShahidTalk2me 12:38, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
I think it's wrong that instead of fighting Sarvagnya, you are going with him. You said section is very well referenced but there's no reference to that. ShahidTalk2me 13:25, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
It does not support the claim. ShahidTalk2me 13:32, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
But I disagree with removing the site. Let's first discuss rather than give up. Why don't you try to argue and fight for the source if you believe it's reliable. ShahidTalk2me 13:34, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
You should not work so hard, I told you already I have references to replace these with, why are you looking for references then? Well I appreciate that but it's not the matter now. ShahidTalk2me 13:37, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
So let's wait for the final decision then... It's not the end. And if it were teenagers, it wouldn't be cited by Times Online... ShahidTalk2me 13:43, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Well Wikipedia is a bad comparison. Please remove your messages from my talk page. Some editors will now utilise that... ShahidTalk2me 13:48, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
I asked you to remove the messages in which you say teenagers because someone will quote it... Well you don't understand and it doesn't matter. In fact, I'm leaving Wikipedia very soon, so there's nothing to be worried about. ShahidTalk2me 14:00, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Will respond soon. ShahidTalk2me 14:30, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

You must see the noticeboard! Sarvagnya now questions the reliability of boxofficemojo.com as well in the same way he did that with BOI. I think it makes some things clear. ShahidTalk2me 17:18, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

On the noticeboard, in the "break on Boxofficeindia.com: special invitation for broader input" section, User:John Z left a looong message which was unnoticed. What do you think about it? ShahidTalk2me 16:42, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Here - his point is extremely valid. It's a big WOW! But it went unnoticed because it was not posted in the right subsection, because there are several subsections after "break on Boxofficeindia.com: special invitation for broader input" which he may have mistakenly considered new topics. We should contact him and ask him to move his message to the last relevant subsection of BOI. ShahidTalk2me 16:53, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Very great and impressive as always. I wouldn't like to move his comment. I think asking him would be the best thing and then he will also add some things to his note. ShahidTalk2me 17:16, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Well it's most likely not to pass FAC, but some points are valid, so it's good to improve the article. I'll see your mail later mate. Regards, ShahidTalk2me 20:13, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations on getting WP:Thailand up and running. Sorry I am not around to help with tagging and editing. At the end of the day, I am so tired, I don't have any more energy for work. How do you propose we do so. I apologise, I can't be of much help setting this thing up. perhaps we could ask some person who is more experianced at creating bots. I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 21:32, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Museum in Vietnam

I was checking "what links here" for Albert Memorial, and was surprised to see a Vietnam museum pop up. The article was a mess, so I redirected to the city article, but I remembered that you were creating museum stubs recently. Do you want to have a go at turning Nha Trang Live History Museum into an article, using the material in the page history at Nha trang live history muesum? I think this is meant to be a different museum to the Yersin Museum, which looks quite interesting (and doesn't have an article). But it might be the same thing. What do you think? Carcharoth (talk) 22:52, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh, I should have left User:Synitti a message. I'll do that later, but if you do end up doing something here, maybe you could leave a message instead? If you don't have time to deal with this, just say, and I'll explain why I redirected it and help them if they want to write an article on the museum. Carcharoth (talk) 22:54, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
I suspect the bit about the London museum got carried over in a cut-and-paste when trying to find a suitable template on which to base the article, and the editor forgot to remove that bit. Still, the editor has been welcomed and maybe someone will one day write something about the Yersin museum. Carcharoth (talk) 16:36, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

It's not that uncommon. Anyway, his article explains all:

"Soon afterwards (1890), he left for French Indochina in Southeast Asia as a physician to the Messageries Maritimes company, in the Saigon-Manila line and then in the Saigon-Haiphong line. In 1894 Yersin was sent by request of the French government and the Pasteur Institute to Hong-Kong, to investigate the ongoing Manchurian Pneumonic Plague epidemic, and there, in a small hut next to the institute ( from "Plague" by Wendy Orent) along with his co-discoverer Shibasaburo Kitasato, he made his greatest discovery, that of the pathogen which causes the disease."

I came across another scientist-museum connection the other day. See John Allan Broun, Napier Museum and Trivandrum Zoo. Carcharoth (talk) 17:01, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Mapping system

Hmm, this is a good idea, but I'm not a coding expert, so I have no idea how to code it. I've pasted your message to User:SQL who does know more complex things like that, so hopefully he can figure out how to have a bot work off a standardized list to make articles. Its been done before by Rambot, but his operator is no longer active. Good find. MBisanz talk 15:22, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Crying Shame

An editor in India has spent a great deal of effort to create an article Tanjore Diary, which is a collection of economic and demographic data on several villages. His work is on the verge of being deleted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tanjore Diary because he didn't format it correctly and nobody can figure out his intent. Could you take a look at it? I believe that it could be the basis of 11 articles. Phlegm Rooster (talk) 15:52, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Response

Lack of civility is unbecoming in an experienced user such as yourself. Everyone makes errors of judgment, and your tone seems to elevate these to mortal sins. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 16:54, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Cleaning up is a matter of degree: coming across a sorry stub or a dab with one blue and one red link. I'll add what I can for inhabited places - which are inherently notable so deletion is not an option. But I don't expect anyone who tries to improve an article to either make it an FA or leave it be. If I can find a citation in the online databases I'll populate it with that data - an infobox that will have nothing more than the geographic coordinates doesn't do much to advance the ball at that level. [edit] Possibly unfree Image:Tristan da Cunha5.jpg

An image that you uploaded or altered, Image:Tristan da Cunha5.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images because its copyright status is disputed. If the image's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the image description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. LyrlTalk C 21:53, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

I have also listed the other image in this series still on Wikipedia, Image:Tristan da Cunha1.jpg. I'm hoping you'll add more input to this discussion, but just from what I have seen so far it looks like the images may not meet Wikipedia's licensing requirements. If this is the case, for future image permissions you may find Wikipedia:Example requests for permission to be a useful page. LyrlTalk C 21:53, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Permissions that just say "For use by Wikipedia" have been prohibited by the Wikimedia Foundation. The copyright holder actually has to say, "I release this image under the GFDL". A release under GFDL means the copyright holder is OK with people using their images for any purpose - not just Wikipedia - including commercial purposes, and that they are OK with derivatives of their work being created. The only rights they retain under GFDL are the right of attribution, and the right to not have any derivatives copyrighted.
You have done a lot of valuable work on Wikipedia and I don't want to discourage that. But Wikipedia's Foundation believes it necessary to adopt restrictive guidelines for images. These guidelines can be confusing and complicated, but it's important that we make an effort to comply with them. Let me know if you have any other questions or if there's anything else I can do to help.LyrlTalk C 22:55, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
I don't have access to the OTRS system, so I can't fix the tagging myself. I also consider myself intermediate-level at understanding the licensing requirements, so I'm more comfortable having a second person look at the permission email anyway. That said, it looks good to me. I don't have much time now, but I'll ask the OTRS contact about these images tomorrow (it sounds like you already forwarded the new email to the OTRS?). Unless something comes up to surprise me, I expect the licensing tags will be straightened out in a few days. Thanks for all your hard work on improving Wikipedia! LyrlTalk C 02:12, 15 May 2008 (UTC)
Did you receive any reply to your previous emails? The images were not tagged as verified because the original permission did not meet Wikipedia's requirements. But if you received no reply at all that is a different issue.
Please go ahead and submit your new email to OTRS. Once that is done, I will ask one of the OTRS volunteers on their talk page for assistance in reviewing the permission and hopefully getting all the tags placed. LyrlTalk C 21:47, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Maplandia

Please note, that I have never opposed the idea of using a bot to create missing articles. My advocacy for using government sources is simply due to fact that I would have preferred bots creating bigger articles later to bots creating one-liners now, but I'll certainly accept that I'm in one-man minority with this.

The significant argument I had in the last time (bot using fallingrain) was that the articles created would not have had any administrative hierarcy (province this, county that, commune so-and-so). Lack of that information would have made future expansion difficult, as it would have been time-consuming to figure which is what and where. This issue is made worse when the same name is used for multiple settlements. In the case of Madagascar perhaps 10%-15% of the communes will require disambiguation, but if one were to include villages the fraction will go much higher (80%? 90%? no idea, but a large fraction anyway). Now maplandia has the information about the administration: fine. I still have some minor concerns, but I'm not opposing... as long as we are in the clear regarding the copyright.

Considering the scale of the proposed operation we really need to be sure that we are on solid ground legally. Quite possibly I'm paranoid about copyright, probably due to overcomsumption of mushrooms; in that case everything is fine and I'll try to include more fishes in my diet and stay away from mushrooms. Or then there is a problem with using maplandia in this way... either way it needs to be settled before a bot starts operations. Even if the source could not be used without their permission, the idea of having hundreds of thousands of links on wikipedia pointing towards maplandia might make the site owner quite happy. They might consider sending an email to OTRS to grant the permission a good deal. – Sadalmelik 06:37, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, Burma just like North Korea, Somalia or Congo Kinshasa are not the easiest places to get any reliable information. Well, we'll hear from the site owner then... Coincidentally, the do claim copyright for all the information on the site... I'm actually a bit suprised they also include maps in their statement, but essentially that's between them and Google, and there is probably a long lawyer-speaksy document somewhere in Google sites explaining why/how/where. Cheers, – Sadalmelik 05:31, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Argentine films - Arrrrrrgh, you're right, what a morass... It does appear that photos in general have a 20 year (c), but works of art, including films & posters appear to be 50 years after (c) holder (normally there it was the director/producer) dies. However, it also appears that if a corporation holds the (c) and has chosen to renew it, the old rule goes out the window. I did a quick scan of what I could find online, and it's massively confusing - and my guess what I could find is incomplete. That's the reason that we probably should consider those non-free until there's an official ruling on it. And, just in case, a FuR don't hurt anything and would appease the obsessive-compulsive bots. Ciao for now, and keep up the good fight! SkierRMH (talk) 05:57, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:ToninoDelliColli.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:ToninoDelliColli.jpg.

You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. No, but I seem to remember that you have some Austrian/Swiss or whatever background from the movies. On that basis, I might call you a fucking "fill in the blank". I love the photo of the sign there, by the way. And, after the block I expect to receive for this wears off, I will try to give a bit more attention to some of the smaller countries, particularly including the myths. There's one myth of a monster in British Columbia. If you try to take the water from a given lake, the lake will follow you home, drown everyone in the village, and then recede to its old banks. Stephen King would like that one. John Carter (talk) 19:39, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

It's going to be huge, but it will be worth it. It should also help encourage some editors in the various areas involved, as they'll have reason to think that content relating to their subject already qualifies as notable enough. Having said that, it's going to be huge. Togo isn't that big, and it has over 500 already. If we can get one of the bots to autocreate articles, that'll help enormously. Once it's started, I think we'll probably reach 5,000,000 articles within a few months. John Carter (talk) 21:04, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey once again. I wasn't on my computer last night to see your next message (out at a concert at Jaxx Nightclub). I've been playing guitar since 1996. I can't believe you have a friggin sitar and a banjo! That's pretty cool. As for the Dalai Lama lineage, that would be a must. I'll see what I can do in the near future.--Pericles of AthensTalk 17:46, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
Since my university library has an odd lack of books on Tibetan history (the same with the online scholarly journal database JSTOR), let alone the history of the Dalai Lamas, I'm afraid that any more sources I glean about the history of Tibet or the Dalai Lamas will have to come from books that I myself will have to purchase, which is going to cost me a pretty penny. There is a new library that has opened up near my home, however. I will scour it before I make the drastic decision of actually buying books, but I have a feeling that library won't have as much books on Tibet as my university library does. Like I said above, I'll see what I can do.--Pericles of AthensTalk 18:40, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Dear "Bald One"

Thanks you so much for the "smiles" and note. I am on a very poor internet connection here in H.K. at the moment and am not sure if even this will get through - so I had better keep it short. It is great to see though, that the Tibet during the Ming Dynasty has reached FA status! Fabulous! When I am on a more stable line I will read it right through. Also, I must get back to the Tibet and History of Tibet articles - but it may be a while as next week I will be visiting my Mum and sister in Vancouver and getting ready for Mum's 94th! Thanks again for taking the time and effort away from all your multitude of other interests to do something to bring the Tibet material up to speed. Also, I think you have been really instrumental in getting a number of other people involved. Great work! The Bald One From Down Under, John Hill (talk) 12:40, 17 May 2008 (UTC).

PS I am sure you will be pleased to hear that we went to Macao yesterday to pay our respects to St. Francis Xavier's humerus - we saw most of the rest of him in Goa years ago (in a fabulous baroque solid silver casket in the Bom Jesus cathedral there) - but have been most distressed to hear that they have taken the forearm of his blessing hand to Rome - so I guess I will have to get to Rome sometime to complete the pilgrimage!!!

[edit] Dalai Lama and images

Fabulous work - wonderful images! You are doing really fine work - do keep it up. I am trying to use my own laptop - I can receive mail but can't send it for some reason on the hotel network without going through my browser and I can't be bothered searching AGAIN through all my papers for them. Am able, however, to see access Wikipedia - though I don't want to spend too much time on it when I could be outa and about doing other things. Yes, you are right - I do have a fairly good personal library on Tibet - particularly on the early history of the country - but it is all at home in Cooktown. I will try to go through some of these articles on Tibetan history when I return - checking facts and adding quotes - but that won't be until late July, unfortunately. Keep up the great work - and thanks again on behalf of all who love Tibet! John Hill (talk) 01:53, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] GeoBot

I've dumped out discussion off into User:Fritzpoll/GeoBot because it will get long and rambling - create subpages there if you need to show me a "template" for different article types - do we need ones for different administrative levels, etc. Cheers, Fritzpoll (talk) 21:29, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Ok, we're nearly there. I need to know what do do with multiple hits of the same name. One of the safeguards within the program will be to check if a page exists first. If it does, and can't write a new one, I'll drop the data on-wiki so that you and other volunteers (including me) can verify it. I will drop the list of created articles on a separate page so that they can be reviewed - I may split this one by date the bot was run.
I have a few other problems involving the bot - how to properly wikilink the articles, for example. For instance, one the page you demo'd to me at User:Fritzpoll/GeoBot/Example. There is a wikilink to Waingmaw Township, but the actual data page doesn't have this. The text I would extract has the following "Waingmaw, Kachin, Burma, Asia". Now, other areas that don't have townships, give me different data such as "Badakhshan, Afghanistan, Asia". So if the extra name at the front is always a township, and has the article name "XXX Township", then that's fine. A secondary issue is, are redlinks within the article ok? For example, Achin in Afgahnistan gives me the locale information "Nangarha, Afghanistan, Asia", but Nangarha doesn't have an article. Should I redlink it?
Finally, town or village? No way of determining this from maplandia. I can have a look and see if I can reference this against another set of documents...but can you point me somewhere if you know of anywhere. With the answers all sorted, I can have this written in 72hours, ready for BAG approval. Fritzpoll (talk) 22:26, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

From this page here - I could download all 900MB of data, and process it to possibly create the original files. It has the names, and the coordinates. The data also has other infor - just thought I'd chuck it in there as an option; otherwise, get back to me on the above questions. Best wishes, Fritzpoll (talk) 23:22, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for filling in that redlink - apparently a bunch of the artists I've been dealing with have stuff that's ended up there. How goes the geobot? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:14, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Regarding the geobot - I hope it comes online soon; I'd like to see some of that stuff get good coverage.
Regarding the unknown artists - it's interesting; as more information becomes available, more of them get named. And then there are the fascinating cases such as the "Master of the Washington Coronation", who was, then wasn't, and now is again, Paolo Veneziano. It's all art historical smoke-and-mirrors, really. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:29, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
I'd be more than happy to run one, given the chance. Show me the tools, I'll do the job. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:30, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
The red links that bother me are the ones related to history and to art history. We didn't even have a category for anonymous artists when I started this work last week; the German, Italian, and French Wikipedias all have one. The German even has an article about the concept of naming such artists, who they call "notnamen". This Wikipedia, by comparison, has woefully little coverage of such artists. I know they're not the most important part of art history, but I think it's interesting to consider just how many have been identified.
A NatureBot sounds like a great idea - I'd be happy to run one of those as well, with the understanding that I know nothing about science whatsoever. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:50, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
You'd be surprised - I've seen some people making an effort at filling in some of those redlinks. And I see new things from the Catholic Encyclopedia popping up every day. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:09, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
The reason for that, I think, is that there's a certain stigma towards creating substubs of that nature; people want to put together something a little more substantial. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:18, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Algeria

Most of them are from this french equivalent of the Municipalities of Algeria page. There are less than 2 thousamnd so this shouldn't be that hard. I also thought I talked to you about this a while ago, but I haven't been working on this because I'm shooting for an FA on William Tubman and Felix Houphouet Boigny. I used the subst:PAGENAME parameter for most of the fallingrain links but a lot of them turned up to be dead links. I'll try to sort through the ones I've created today and use Maplandia coordinates. BAM!!!!! [Head exploding] Could you make a bot to create more hours in a day? I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 19:36, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Also, those tunisian communes need doing too... not to mention the capital Tunis is a disgrace compared to its FA french counterpart. I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 19:49, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

It seems that maplandia caught 6,600 locations while in actuality there are only 1,500 municipalities. I'll only work on the ones that are from the FR wiki. I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 00:24, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Uh oh. On my searches, I found that Maplandia is wrong. It didn't include Bouda, Algeria, no matter how hard I looked but nothing. I think we may have to abort this mission. Do you know of any other webites that I can use, since Maplandia is incorrect? This may be a major setback. I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 00:42, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ok, it's not as automated but....

I listed the first five places in Afghanistan using the output of the bot at User:Fritzpoll/afghanistan . Unfortunately, the GNS data gives me no population values, so I can't make that judgement automatically. If we can find a different source, great...and I'll have a look for that. See if there's something I can do to the formatting of the list to make it easier to assess. Fritzpoll (talk) 20:41, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Recent activity

You'd be amazed at just how many furschlugginger religious groups there are out there. I found a volume today which will be useful in making at least a couple of stubs on some of them. But good God, there are just so bloody many of them. Sorry for not responding earlier, but I've been trying to finish the article of the moment first, to keep the number of open screens down to a minimum. I do think that there is a good chance that the bot will be approved, although I really hope it can add the banners as well. John Carter (talk) 22:03, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] JohnBot

You know no such thing exists, right? :) I do hope to see SatyrTN return soon, as this sort of this is what his bot was designed for. John Carter (talk) 22:10, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Oops, screwed up big that time. Sorry. I think it might be best to wait until the category is completed, to the degree that there aren't expected to be any more articles added to it soon, before making the request, though. And I didn't mean the tagging and assessment, more the creation of missing articles, like the one on Robert Ernest Dickhoff, a man who is a shame on Buddhists everywhere. I have no idea where some of these loons come from, man. John Carter (talk) 22:55, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Approved for 100 edits

In case you hadn't seen - I just want to check the code one last time and then I shall process the first 100 Afghan locations to the wikiproject pages we talked about. I'll update you once the run is complete, then if you and/or others can do the check, I'll convert the list to articles. Cheers Fritzpoll (talk) 22:27, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Check out Wikipedia:WikiProject_Missing_encyclopedic_articles/Places/afghanistan. Some blue links exist. The bot will be programmed to ignore all blue links, and will leave the data for blue-linked articles on this page. If you want the articles made somewhere else, simply change the wikified name. Similarly, all the other data, change it and that's how the article will be. Generally should be a find/replace job for mistakes. Notify me when you're done, and let me know if there's someone else I should be telling about all of this. I will probably logout soon, but will run the bot again tomorrow night if you're ready Fritzpoll (talk) 22:59, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sounds good

I believe you will do more great job with the future bot which would allow wikisphere to be getting shaped well. Hmm.. these days, I'm enjoying creating some cuisine stubs, casting votes for RFA and fighting vandalism (well the last one is actually least favorite one). The artist's work on his article page looks great, although it reminds me of Marc Chagall a bit. Thank you for the heads up. :)--Appletrees (talk) 22:52, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Edits to Tibet

Hey, don't get me wrong, I wasn't accusing you of vandalism. I was trying (poorly) to point out that you were attempting to improve the page. I don't really care about having to remove those pictures again, I was just venting about losing that work. Sorry for the confusion and, just so we're clear, I appreciate the work you did on the page. Thanks for your help out, Cumulus Clouds (talk) 00:38, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Abdelaziz Gorgi

Just thought you wanted to know that Abdelaziz Gorgi is currently at DYK. [edit] Cities, towns and villages in Israel

I am curious, why was this category moved? Was there a discussion? I strongly oppose the move, as cities are well-defined in Israel, and there are 75 of them so they can have their own category. What was the reasoning for the move? -- Ynhockey (Talk) 16:41, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick reply. I'm still not convinced though. First of all, all major countries (UK, US, Australia, etc.) retain the cities category. I'm sure that it would've been the most important to recategorize those. So, why are they still there? I'm guessing that a discussion took place and the editors categorically rejected the proposal.
It also appears that maplandia.com, FritzpollBot's apparent source, doesn't even list Israel. I'm assuming there's another source. But for that, many problems can arise. The most immediate one that I can see is improper transliterations - Hebrew-speakers including myself have long discussed a guideline for Hebrew transliterations (especially location names), and have come up with WP:HE, which is generally very different from accepted gazetteer transliterations. It would take months if not years to manually rename all the 1,100 entries which this bot aims to create for Israel. Other problems include a lack of basic info, lack of proper sourcing, etc. Automatic bot work is never that great, and in fact many users wanted to take action against the Volapük Wikipedia for doing something like this. I am of course aware that a bot created most of the US locality articles.
It is important to note that Israel doesn't have the same problem as many third-world countries, with few Wikipedians and even fewer who are willing to tediously create articles for localities. If WikiProject Israel really wanted to, I'm sure we could cover all of Israel's cities, towns and villages properly within a year (although this has never been our primary goal).
Moreover, there was already a category called Cities, towns and villages in Israel. It would not be harmful if the bot created all its articles there and the users would manually categorize into kibbutzim, moshavim, etc. After the bot is done in the current configuration, this is what will happen anyway, so why harm the process now?
About the discussion in November 2005... honestly, I edited at that time, but most Wikipedians active today have not. Moreover, Cyprus is a small country, and I'm sure that not nearly enough Wikipedians were involved in the discussion, because they were not notified of it - few watch Cyprus-related articles and categories. Not to mention of course that what you did now goes against Wikipedia policy (although I don't blame you, as your intent was clearly good).
I suggest starting a centralized discussion for this, or alternatively starting a discussion on WP Israel to determine what course of action the project's members want to take.
Cheers, Ynhockey (Talk) 17:36, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
I'll address your reply point by point:
1. It is not a given that WP:ISRAEL will side with me. While I am highly active in the project, there are as many opinions as there are people there. I'm sure many Israelis would support an Israel location bot, despite the problems it will create. The reason I suggested WP Israel was that it's the only alternative to a centralized discussion, which can be extremely difficult to organize (a centralized discussion on an issue as important as this should be known to all Wikipedians, with an 'ad' at the top of the page - not sure you can arrange that). However, as I said, a centralized discussion would be the best thing.
2. Yes it seems that you are right - Israeli locations do appear on that website. It should be noted that, as per my above concern, most transliterations are indeed ridiculous and of course different from WP:HE. Also the site seems to list neighborhoods, which are not cities, towns or villages.
3. You completely misinterpreted what I said. Israel being an advanced country vs. US/UK having a cities category were 2 different points. The first point was that Israel doesn't have a problem like certain 3rd world countries that some articles might never be created, so the most a bot can do is speed up the process, not replace it. The second point was that if UK, UK, Australia, and other major countries have a cities category, then there's no reason that one can't exist for Israel, or indeed Cyprus, Mongolia, Rwanda or Haiti. It might be too much for some countries, but I think 75 cities is enough to have a category, and does not constitute over-categorization.
4. Again, in Israel all forms of settlements (cities, kibbutzim, moshavim, etc.) are very clearly defined, and there are many of each (I think over 400 kibbutzim alone, and likely as many moshavim). Therefore, the categories are neither ambiguous nor problematic per policies/guidelines on WP. You probably aren't aware of this, but one time someone created a category for moshavot, a form of settlement which is not clearly defined, I immediately suggested deleting it (it was deleted the next day).
5. Not sure how it helps that cities are under the cities categories, as well as 'cities, towns and villages'. It also goes against WP:CAT. But in any case, as I said before, even if the bot creates all 1,100 entries, they will eventually be categorized into cities, local councils, kibbutzim, moshavim, etc. anyway - so why not just use the current configuration? The bot can insert its new articles into the general category, and we will manually 'correct' it. I'm also not sure how it helps to keep all forms of settlement in a single category. There is indeed a good navigation list for cities, as you stated in your original post (I created it :)), but there is no such list for any of the other forms of settlement.
Cheers, Ynhockey (Talk) 18:01, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
I think it is very good that you are trying to standardize this on Wikipedia, and introduce consistency. However, like the guy who wanted to put global infoboxes for Israeli localities, I think you're going about it wrong (and indeed, IIRC, WP Israel unanimously voted to reject the global infoboxes). Interesting that you mentioned the locator map, which I thought was also very important, but was not successful in copying it over to the Israeli infobox. It would be great if you could do that.
In any case, it's true, each country is indeed special, with its own administrative regions, forms of government, bureaucracy, etc. A global infobox doesn't cater to the needs of all countries, and same with a global category. Not to mention that both introduce a lot of unnecessary clutter. I challenge you to produce a single village in Israel which is today categorized on Wikipedia as a city, or vice versa. Of course, I'll be more than glad to fix any such issues if they do come up, although it is doubtful. I remember that this was a small issue a while ago, when someone decided to put all localities under 'cities', and this is why a category for all forms of settlements (originally: Settlements in Israel) was even created (by yours truly). Now this is no longer an issue, and I don't see why you're trying to fix something that isn't broken. Currently, all (or by far most) countries, including Israel, have a "Cities, towns and villages" category. It is not wrong to also have a cities/villages category under that. However, so far the categorization has been a complete mess, precisely because of this drive for consistency - for example, why is Cities, towns and villages in Cyprus under Cities by country, and not Cities, towns and villages by country? Same goes for most other such categories.
About the comment you posted just now: actually I agree that Coastal cities in Israel is a redundant category (didn't really care about it, but I'll act to have it deleted), although categorizing Rishon LeZion under Rishon LeZion only (and not under 'Cities in Israel', etc.) is fine, per WP:CAT. The category is still a sub-cat of Cities in Israel, so it won't harm the average user from finding it quickly.
In any case, if we can't find a solution between ourselves, I will bring up the issue on WP Israel regardless, and leave you to organize a centralized discussion if you wish - I'd be glad to participate in such a discussion.
Cheers, Ynhockey (Talk) 18:24, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] I'm looking for dedicated users that could use some extra buttons...

Am I reading correctly? You have 154,000 edits? How many articles have you started? I am willing to write up a nomination statement for you, actually I had always assumed you must be an admin already because of your tenure and because of your prolific article building. If you are at all interested in being an admin, click on the link in the box above, and look at the three questions. I will add a nominator's statement if you are interested. Do you know anyone that knows your editing that could co-nominate you? (I know that User:MBisanz offered). Are you yet tired of asking an admin to do a page move over redirect? Tired of asking to get stuff deleted that needs deleting? You've been here long enough, you have an astounding level of contributions focused on making this place as comprehensive as possible. What am I missing? Why haven't you been nommed? Please reply here, I'll be watching this page as well as your RfA page. Cheers, Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 20:55, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Wow, good judgment of you, Keeper76! Baldy, please accept the offer. Cheers!--Appletrees (talk) 21:00, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi I'm flattered at the nomination thankyou. Well you see I have been nominated many times but I have always turned it down because I have always chosen to focus entirely on encyclopedic content. I have always been under the impression that being an adminship would be a burden and prevent me from concnetrating on the encyclopedia. However at times it does seme ridiculous that I haven't got certain tools given the work I do here. I have created around 25,000 articles for wikipedia about twice as many as anybody else I think so my dedication to the project is without a doubt. However I'll need a think about it OK? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:02, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

I received your reply. Sleep on it. Then accept it. I don't expect you to run off and start patrolling AIV or anything, that would be silly. But if you use the extra buttons even once a year, it's worth going through the hell of RfA. Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 21:12, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
DO IT! RUN FOR RFA. YES I KNOW I'M SHOUTING BUT I WANT YOU TO RUN. MBisanz talk 21:34, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Is that a co-nom offer MBisanz? Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 21:42, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Mmm its funny but just a week ago somebody said they would donate $100 to wikipedia if I was elected to the Wikimedia Board. But I;ve always tried to focus entirely on encyclopedic content at times but everybody knows certain tools would help me considerably. Occassionally I get frustrated with even basic tasks I can't perform e.g Category:Cities, towns and villages in Thailand half of the articles are unnecessary under (city). I tried to move them back to the plain names (the provincial equivalents are called ... Province anyway) but of course I was prevented from doing so. I think most people assume I'm an admin anyway. I must admit I'm a bit rusty on certain admin tools and procedures but nothing a bit of examination and homework wouldn't fix. I'll sleep on it ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:42, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Blofeld, go for it. You will receive an astounding amount of support. You don't have to get caught up in the AN or block 1,000 vandals. If and when you need the tools, use them, and you can STILL focus on encyclopedia building. I think we trust you enough, and I would be the FIRST to support. I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 23:18, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
As you wish.....but I think the inappropriate pre-comment by someone who had a dispute with you in the past affects your decision....What a shameful thing....--Appletrees (talk) 12:59, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm certain that you would have many supporters for you, but the process might make you look around the other side of Wikipedia.. Cheer up, man. The digging is a unexpected twist, but we're learning of nature of human beings...Yeah, the kitty on the photos is my 'dream cat' (white neck, paws, tabby, gorgeous green eyes). I visit my talk page a lot even though none visits me, just looking at the comic-strip-like yawning sequences of the cat.--Appletrees (talk) 13:46, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Before I run the bot...

There are some pages with odd thigns in the title - like a part of a name beginning with ' in isolation, and an article ending in "(2)" - is this how you want them - can you just check the list one more time. Thanks Fritzpoll (talk) 21:41, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] In case you didn't see...

I ran the bot, but I use a pre-built framework to interact with Wikipedia, which has a safety feature preventing me from creating pages in the article space. I got it to output a single country to my userspace at User:Fritzpoll/template/test. Don't move it, as I'm using it to identify the work the bot can do. Could you just check it to see that it is ok, and formatted properly. I need to check whether I implemented the category tagging in the code, and you can check if the infobox formatting is to your liking.

By the way, the nom for adminship? May not mean much coming from me, but having seen a lot of your work (new pages patrol was fun when you were online) I'd say you would get it easily and seem to have a need for the tools. For what my opinion is worth, anyway :) Fritzpoll (talk) 00:02, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RfA

Wait for the nomination to be completed, but I say yeah, go for it. John Carter (talk) 13:38, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Blofeld, I received your message and saw you decline. I also saw what Punkmorten did and found it to be in very poor taste. I understand your rationale and won't pester you about it. Please be encouraged that I counted around 7 editors that immediately jumped on your talkpage or mine saying "go for it!", and only one that incorrectly edited your nomination by adding an oppose. That's a passing margin however you look at it. But RfA is a really sucky venue. It's cruel, and it's uncomfortable. There are rumblings here and there of the "admin tools" getting de-bundled, so if someone wanted to block, they could get the block button, if someone wanted to be able to edit protected pages, they could get that, and if someone just needed to do certain page moves, they could do that. Rollback used to be admin only and it was very successfully debundled, so there's precedence. If I ever see anything in the works that will give you the tools you've deserved, without having to go through RfA and answer silly questions about blocking and such (not that you wouldn't answer them well, just that you don't need to answer them well), I'll be sure to let you know. Thanks for your 10s of thousands of contributions, it has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. I'm looking forward to seeing Fritzpollbot in action! Greetings to mighty Blofeld of SPECTRE! On March 13, 2008 you added an "Infobox Settlement" to Vahdat. The result is stupendous. The theater was stupendous. I'm not often a fan of Baroque opera, but last night was stunning. Good cast, good performance, good music...I don't often enjoy a night like that anymore. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 18:07, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Recategorization mess

Hello. I appreciate your efforts you put into recategorization of settlements in African countries, but please, don't do this for Europe. All European countries have distinct classification of their populated places and mostly, it is reflected also here on Wikipedia. Putting cities and villages together is like putting singers and actors in one category. I was forced to revert your recategorization of Latvian places, since it is one of countries using classification in a distinct manner. -- Darwinek (talk) 12:37, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

God, you can mess it together, it's like messing up Cities in Texas, Towns in Texas and Unincorporated communities in Texas and merging 'em to Cities, towns and villages monster. I am really sorry if you are unable to see the difference. Your generalized efforts to completely change used system without any discussion is highly controversial and can make you many trouble in the future. I do not seek them for you, as I can see some positive input you made to WP in the past, but this goes just too far and can anger other users who could be not so friendly towards you as I am. I will just revert your edits if you decide to continue your grand project, that's all. -- Darwinek (talk) 12:48, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
Latvia is not a Pakistan, it is a small country and cities ain't huge as in Pakistan or India for Christ sake. It is an official classification, ask Latvian parliament or maybe Latvian themselves. -- Darwinek (talk) 12:50, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

No, I am not aggresive, if you have such impression from previous conversation, I am sorry then. One important issue about these places I want to stress is the linguistic issue. For example "city" and "town" is miasto in Polish, many other languages do not distinguish between city and a town. Hence, Polish cities/towns are categorised as "Cities and towns in Poland". Same rule applies for the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Russia to name some. Resolving Latvian issue with "Cities and towns in Latvia" and "Villages in Latvia" would be the best.

As for the population, don't concentrate on that. For example, in the Czech Rep. there are towns with some 200 people and villages with 4,000. Number of inhabitants is not important in issues of official status of a populated settlement. -- Darwinek (talk) 13:26, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

I've informed the WikiProject Latvia. Thanks, I just have to pass state final exams in June, it will be tough but I can handle that I hope. -- Darwinek (talk) 13:43, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Nah, I'm just an ordinary student. Well, the British political system and associated Westminsterian concept of democracy make some problems to me, I just have to learn it. -- Darwinek (talk) 14:19, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Speaking of which...how goes the GeoBot? Ready for prime time yet? --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:05, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
I can try to help with winnowing, but a lot depends on what kind of schedule I get at work.
By the by, another thing to consider - I know that right now locality infoboxes only show the location of a town or village within its state or district; any way of adding another map that shows a location within a smaller geographic area? For instance: both Hybla Valley, Virginia and Great Falls, Virginia are in Fairfax County. But neither has a county-level infobox, only a state-level one. Which is fine, as far as it goes. But I think it would be nice to show the relative locations of both within the county. The state-level box is a little too un-detailed, to me.
What say you? Think we could make a case for it?
(Oh, and I use those towns as examples because they're at completely different ends of the county, but the state map doesn't show that.) --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:18, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
And don't forget, there's a lot of Antarctic articles left to create ;) --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:19, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Maps like that are exactly what I'm talking about. Although I don't see any harm in designing a few on an even smaller scale...I think they would be highly useful as well. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 14:13, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm..I don't know. The format on Korean geographical information has set up by many editors for a long time, so the issue you raise has to be discussed at WT:KO. [edit] Burkina Faso

My thought exactly. Well, I kinda sorta expected that response from you, considering you have created 25,000 pages and actually turned down a nomination for adminship (which I suppose even I wouldn't do).

By the way, I have no idea what you are doing today, but I'm trying to gun all the Burkina Faso departments tonight. Those won't be covered by the FritzpollBot, so they will have to be done manually. I wonder if we could find some way to advertise the bot sine no one has been wanting to flag it. Perhaps I could talk to a b'crat about the idea, though I don't want to seem as if I'm canvassing. It is a very important proposal however, aand to save time I think we should boost the article creations a minute to 15 or 20. I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 19:46, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes if I ever run for adminship I woud receive loads of opposition based on my block log alone, and if adminship is really no big deal (which I disagree with, being that it potentially can cause massive damage to the encyclopedia (forgive my improper wording--social networking site perhaps?) which is what exacly has been done in the past), then why not grant it to any hardworking editor whom we can trust such as yourself? You don't have to use it that much, just using it once a year would be a net positive for the project. I regularly see users' adminship being disallowed because they only have such and such amounts in the Wikispace. Also it seems to be almost natural for users to be put in with hovering around 1,000 mainspace contribs, being less than half their edit count. I did once nominate this one user called Moni3. She had written gobs and gobs of featured and good work. Alas, even though she's been around since 2006, she had less edits than myself, and she ultimately decided to decline my offer. She even went as far to suggest against me nomming her, saying that it would damage my reputation by nomming someone as unusual as herself! She did once say to poop on bots, but with all those coren search bot messages that came up on our talk pages and the recent spurr of image bot spam on you I think we can both agree! That's another thing I hate: Image copywright paranoia. I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 20:17, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tonight from FritzpollBot...

I plan to run the program tonight, as previously described, to extract the data from all the countries in Asia. This will probably take some number of hours all on its own. I then plan to upload the pages separately and manually so that we can begin checks. Some of these pages are going to be exceedingly long. China has 87,000 listed locations, and Iran has 67,000. I will post up a list of those pages that I complete the uploading for once I am done, to allow you and others to begin the checking. Hopefully, as we say, the bot will be approved, but this may take a matter of weeks. If, however, once approved, Asia has been fully checked and the categories sorted and agreed upon, we could upload 800,000 articles almost continuously over the course of a month whilst I (on another machine) manually (or automatically, but it might be pushing the bot policy somewhat to do this) process and upload more data to be checked.

Now, I can't guarantee that I'll get all the data processed and uploaded over the next 24 hours (though I'll try) and we may not necessarily finish Asia before approval, but any headstart is a good one, yes? Fritzpoll (talk) 13:25, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Minor delay - I kicked the bot off running at 8pm, and at 11.30pm it had only processed 800 articles. So I stopped it, and rewrote it slightly. It has now processing them at more than one village a second. There will be a minor change in format to do with the longitude and latitude, but it will make it all more readable fortunately. I will retrofit the existing list manually so that we don't waste the checking that you and editorofthewiki have already done. I should have a few countries up by tomorrow morning, and I will continue to run this throughout the day. By my estimates, however, China will take over 24 hours to run, so I may kick this off in my lab next week! Fritzpoll (talk) 00:05, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Uploading pix from Tajikistan

As a trial I have uploaded to Wiki Commons four photos in Category:Agriculture in Tajikistan and one photo (DushanbeWedding.jpg) in Category:People of Tajikistan. The two "rice" photos in agriculture are high-resolution; the rest are low-resolution by intent, but they all exist also in high resolution on my computer and can be uploaded as such. Please check the quality vs. resolution and let me know if to continue uploading low-res formats or stick with high-res. Regards. --Zlerman (talk) 05:37, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, but what resolution? Hi-res files are 1.5 MB each, low-res are around 100 KB each. What do you suggest in terms of size-quality tradeoffs? --Zlerman (talk) 10:29, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

  • I have uploaded another batch of "city" photos from Dushanbe and Tursunzade. They all went tentatively into Category:Tajikistan, but we obviously need a more efficient categorization for them. Please have a look and tell me what you think. --Zlerman (talk) 16:18, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] missing geography articles

Hey, you may find this link interesting: http://www.parliament.am/legislation.php?sel=show&ID=2243&lang=rus. It's the administrative division of Armenia, basically lists of municipalities (and the villages in them) by district. It's in Russian, but at least that's easier for me to read than Armenian. If I have the time soon, I can translate this into lists of municipalities, and someone can cross-check the list on your project page. I'm not really sure what you asked me on my talk page. If I understand your coordinates question correctly: I would prefer entering the coordinates in a {{coord}} template, that shouldn't be too difficult for a bot. Markussep Talk 14:13, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/Places/ now gives a full list as they are created and some instructions Fritzpoll (talk) 14:17, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
That Bago, Sonoma (36 N 4 15 23 E) example looks really ugly. If all five places are really notable and different places, there must be another way of disambiguation. How would the locals refer to the places? Maybe with a river name, or an administrative subdivision we don't know of yet. If all else fails, maybe Bago, western Sonoma would be an idea. Markussep Talk 15:17, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Wow! This is great!! Thanks a lot for the bot. Wonderful!--Dwaipayan (talk) 15:21, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
My opinion is this canvassing rule should be objectively used on case by case basis. usually, if one is canvassing for reviews (including peer reviews, and, IMO, FACs), it's fine. Now, the problem happens when someone canvasses a specific group of users (often new users) for some thing that is practically easily recognisable as sheer propaganda. Some admins can be given the power to revert/stop such propaganda, which appears as propaganda to common sense. And indeed in most of such cases, it is easily recognisable.
Anyway, the bot is doing great. I hope to create multiple articles from the list :)--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:08, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
If the bot approval goes through, the bot will create them for you! Fritzpoll (talk) 16:18, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Jeeeez....bot will create 1.8 millions article!!!!!!! Wow.... this is going to change the history of mankind :) Anyway, thanks a lot. definitely this will substantially reduce the systemic bias in geography.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:15, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

A question. What to do for links the bot is creating that goes to a different page? For example, the bot lists in Bahrain a place named Ali, which takes to Ali. Now, let's suppose an article is manually created as Ali, Bahrain. In the page of lists, do I need to strike off that Ali entry, and mention instead the Ali, Bahrain article has been created?--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:25, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Again, Bahrain page 1 has Al Malikiyah that redirects to a place of same name in Syria. What to do in this case?--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:28, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
If I find the blue link wrong, do I simply change the blue link to the actual link in that list itself? (Changing blue Ali to Ali, Bahrain in the page1 for bahrain, for instance). Or, will this manual act somehow jeopardize the bot's functioning?--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:30, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I looked at the list again, and got it. So we manually change the bot-generated link to properly disambiguated link, no problem there. Fine, would be trying my best to help. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:35, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Please see the question in Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/Places/bangladesh/page21.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:42, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Enough for today?

Going through maplandia's list of asian countries, I'm up to Cambodia, having skipped Burma for the moment (will take 8 hours to process) - going to finish uploading the Cambodian lists. I hope they approve the bot soon - this is very tiring to sort out manually! Fritzpoll (talk) 16:18, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Enough, no more, 'tis not so sweet now as 'twas before: I am about a quarter of the way through Cambodia (page 1) but I just can't go on! [edit] More on Preity Zinta

The references do not say that critics noted her versatility after the release of Chori Chori Chupke Chupke in particular. IMO, its the portrayal of wide ranges of characters in all three films that critics recognised as sign of versatility. I do not think there is need of telling "after the release of CCCC...". Its after all three films released, that the thing happened. So I reworded it as "Following the portrayal of a wide range of characters in Kya Kehna, Sangharsh and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Zinta was recognised for her versatility as an actress, and credited with establishing a new image for leading actresses in Bollywood." this can be made less complicated by breaking into two sentences maybe. But "after the release" noy needed IMO. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:33, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, indeed Shahid's version "Following her portrayal of a range of characters in Kya Kehna, Sangharsh and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Zinta was often recognised for her versatility as an actress. Critics attributed her roles in these films as to establishing a new image for leading actresses in Bollywood". is much better and easier to understand. Maybe exclude the word "often".--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:40, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Fixing own error of omission

The Geography Barnstar
This single award is probably nowhere near enough to express the gratitude virtually every editor who deals with geographic content will have for seeing the world covered in a much more adequate and reasonable way. Thank you for your work, and for the remarkable inspiration you have already been to others. John Carter (talk) 17:25, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
And, for what it's worth, I think a request at Wikipedia:Bot requests to assess all the articles created, or even to have the same bot go through them all again later to tag them, would probably be enough to get them all tagged. John Carter (talk) 18:13, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Best thing to do is go with what we got and try to find more. This site might be useful for a few, as might the Imperial Gazetteer discussed here. But that's the best I can come up with. John Carter (talk) 19:19, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Number of missing places

Hi Blofeld, Kudos to all the great work you are doing. However, when I went and checked the assessment page, I found something perplexing, which says, India has about 28000+ places whereas Pakistan has 78000+ places. In fact as far as I know, India has about 600000 villages, but I am not sure about that. Can you see what the problem with these numbers is? Or is it just the number of places that the Google maps covers? DSachan (talk) 18:38, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi again, here is the link. [9]. DSachan (talk) 18:53, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Oh, I think you were asking the details of all the places, just like maplandia, sorry for misunderstanding. I think this is hard to find, this link just says that there are so many villages. DSachan (talk) 18:56, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Since the Census of India gives the figure, it is true. Census of India is conducted by the Government of India every 10 years. Last was on 2001. We try to abide by Census of India statistics in all the relevant articles.
And this is only number of villages. Add with these "census towns", "urban agglomerations" etc. However, most of larger subunits are already covered in wikipedia.
Now, I don't know what is the definition of villages they used. The Census metadata defines several census units used. I think, notability-wise, villages having its own Village councils under Panchayati Raj are notable (I may be wrong in my assumption though).
The gist is, yes, since Census India gives the figure, it is true.--Dwaipayan (talk) 19:21, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
hmmm...thinking of any notability criteria? More importantly, how can the bot utilise that notability criteria? Ummm... I guess, no other way :(
For the time being, google is ok. You may consult Ganeshk (talk · contribs). He operated Ganeshbot that created numerous Indian location articles from census data. He may have some clue regarding source etc.--Dwaipayan (talk) 19:35, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Google's probably not finished yet, given the size of India, but might have figured Pakistan might be easier. This site I think is US government, so it should be freely available. John Carter (talk) 19:37, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
I notice something more, though not much of help, but yahoo map covers it much more comprehensively than Google maps. I checked it only for India. When I zoom in over a region, I see hundreds of settlements in Yahoo maps which are not in google maps. Though even yahoo maps is not complete, because I could not find my own village, but surprisingly, I could find hundreds of other settlements (villages, towns) around my village, which were not even in Google maps and all of them were correct. I know this because I know the area very well. Many villages around my village were even smaller to mine, but I am not sure, on what basis, Yahoo decided to cover them, and my mine. So, if we could somehow find the website which uses Yahoo maps, rather than google maps (just like maplandia), we might be able to get all the coordinates as well (of more places than by Google maps, though even this is not all). I am not sure how difficult this is gonna be.... One more thing, if this is true for India, then I have no reason to believe that this will not be true for other countries. So in fact even if the new bot creates all articles, this is only going to be a small fraction of what really exists in the world. My head is spinning now. I am not sure if there is a solution. DSachan (talk) 19:51, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
Yes, you are right, but I couldn't find all those places even in Encarta. Yahoo maps is much more comprehensive. Encarta seems just equivalent to google maps for india in terms of coverage. But yes, sure we have to get going with the available data on google maps. That will be the right thing to do taking note of the pathetic geographic coverage in wikipedia at the moment. DSachan (talk) 20:05, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Actually, the account was created on May 19, 2008. The way the Mediawiki software works, no account can create a page without entering the CAPTCHA text until it is 4 days old and has 10 edits. By my math FritzpollBot is now 4 days old, and has 10 edits under its belt, so it should be able to create articles without needing manual intervention. I'll ping the bot's owner with this message. Category:Tajikistan in Wiki Commons contains three city-level subcategories: Isfara, Khujand, Panjakent. Hi, Blofeld, and please forgive the delay. Those are good stubs, though I'm not sure that Linda Maria Baros is notable enough (the bar on notability seems to be set lower on rowiki, and I suspect that it may have started as a self-promotional resume). Dahn (talk) 10:53, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Most likely. She did earn some awards apparently, but they appear to me to be non-notable themselves. This looks like a "to be revisited in a couple of years". (I was writing this between your last two messages.) Dahn (talk) 11:13, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, she does appear to be (though I'm not notable with her work). I just returned from a longish break, but I'll see what I can do. Dahn (talk) 11:21, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

There is one more thing - and this is not my Colombo impression :). I appreciate your efforts to adapt the articles to the standards here, but some things need looking into: for example, note that Boeriu translated Dante under the title Divina Comedie - shouldn't it be rendered as "The Divine Comedy"?; also, you could perhaps streamline the categories by adding ones for place of birth where this available (see Category:People by city in Romania and Category:People by county in Romania - when it comes to Boeriu, we have Category:People from Cluj County for natives of Turda, at least for now). Dahn (talk) 11:29, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Hope I didn't sound condescending - I can actually see how it would be tiresome to look up the county for the city just to fill in one non-essential category (though it does give one the chance to see if the link itself does require disambig). 'Nyway: I couldn't yet find that much detail on Boeriu, but I shall revisit the article at some point. I'm just copyediting it for now. About Shafir: I wanted to start it several times around, but it would imply revisiting a number of issues in Romanian politics that have frankly begun to disgust me (it would be hard not to mention that Shafir is an outspoken critic of Romanian crypto- and neocommunists, as well as of Romanian neonazis, and, as unquestionably right as he is, yet another article where those murky waters have to be explored is not on the top of my list for now). Dahn (talk) 11:48, 25 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, I don't know about him being pleasant or unpleasant, but he is an important scholar. My point was that his main subject is grim and its implications are bitter - in his articles, he discusses how the Securitate structures have managed to survive in post-revolutionary Romanian society, how antisemitism are racism are still present in Romanian political discourse, how neofascism and communism have created a hybrid form that is still influential etc. All of this is worth dealing with in several articles, including the one on him, but it would be a considerable effort to summarize. Especially since I'm kind of drifting between articles and, as of late, wikipedia branches.
Thank you for the kind wishes, and let's keep in touch. Dahn (talk) 12:00, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Indeed. Dahn (talk) 12:11, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Dalai Lama

No, no luck so far. I haven't been to my university library in weeks, though. As for the article on the Kingdom of Dali, I agree, it is in a poor state as a lowly stub. I'll at least add a few sentences soon.--Pericles of AthensTalk 12:02, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

I can try - it's hell around here today, though. Move it to the talk page and I'll see if I can't start something in a little while. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 14:46, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Sounds good - I'll try and vet it later today when I have the chance.
And don't fault Babelfish too much - I've actually used it a lot in my translations from Italian. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 15:04, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Looking pretty good so far - I'll try and copyedit some when I have a chance.

[edit] CSV upload

Blofeld, Just wanted to add my appreciation of the project you are undertaking, creating articles for cities/towns around the world that are missing articles in Wikipedia. I had done this previously with Indian towns and cities with Ganeshbot similar to what User:Rambot did. What you and User:Fritzpoll are doing is on a much bigger scale. Kudos!

I thought you may be interested in the new AWB plugin that I had written that creates articles from CSV data sources. Articles based any data source (plants, towns, insects, stars etc.) can now be easily created without new programming required (bot approval will be required though). If interested, check out User:Ganeshbot/CSVLoader. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 15:25, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] New feature in Google maps

Hi Blofeld, just to let you know... have you seen the new feature in google maps, which shows all the places on earth on its map which have a wikipedia article? You can see the places by turning on wikipedia in 'more' tab. I think, it is amazing, and when I went to see US or UK, I was astounded to see that not even single place is left in wikipedia, whereas in other countries, the wikipedia icon is very sparse, suggesting how uneven the coverage is on wikipedia. You can get a rough feel there about what country needs immediate attention. So, you are great going. DSachan (talk) 17:21, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tunisia

I've noticed your hard work. All articles look much better with infobox and locator map. Expansion will only add value to this article. By the way I plan to recategorize Hungarian settlements in the future, as they are wrongly categorized. I must discuss it before with my friends from WPP Hungary. I would be grateful for your help then - many articles wait for that. - Darwinek (talk) 19:01, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Exactly "Cities and towns of" and "Villages of" ones, however I think I will get to it in June or maybe even later. Locator maps as for now are quite good, I agree some of them are somewhat ugly but it is better than nothing, kind of start. -- Darwinek (talk) 19:34, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Indian towns and villages

The data sources you were looking for are:

User:Ganeshbot had already created the towns from Census 2001. User:Sumibot created some of the villages in Andhra Pradesh, many villages may still be missing. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 02:14, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

User:Sumibot created tehsils which are administrative divisions. I will see if I can find a source for that. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 02:16, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Okay...added the link above. Census had removed the link...but I could find it on internet archive. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 12:41, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
The list looks great. I never knew such a website listing all the Indian villages existed. However, I must say that the list looks like a shoddily made list, I couldn't find my village in the list. But however, I can go on and add my village manually later, but this just shows that many entries could be either missing or wrongly typed. Anyway, if somehow we could obtain the coordinates of all, that will be a huge step forward. DSachan (talk) 10:19, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
For Ganeshbot, I had used Fallingrain to pull the coords. They are not complete though. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 12:41, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Regarding categories, I would suggest creating them at the district level. Some states already have stubs stored at the district level. See Category:Tamil_Nadu_geography_stubs. Previously category split was done when categories reached a article limit (>65). We should not have that problem since we creating 600000 of them. . It will be better to propose new stub templates/categories before starting this project. WP:WSS people are very strict about this requirement. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 12:54, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

I was talking about the stub category structure (District name geography stubs) , not the main one. The stub categories and templates will need to be proposed...they should not created without approval (if you don't want to be scolded :) The main one (Cities, towns, villages in District name) will need more discussion at WT:IN before implementing. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 13:09, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Added Wikipedia_talk:Noticeboard_for_India-related_topics#Merging_town_and_village_categories. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 13:18, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
I am going to add some questions to the bot approval page, for example, will it add a specific stub template, for example, {{Coimbatore-geo-stub}}. This will help categorize these stubs proplery. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 13:12, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
As for your question to Ganeshk about no. of districts, there are 604 districts according to List of districts of India. DSachan (talk) 13:51, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Yes, 604 categories seems right. I would say that average number of settlements per district could be very uneven across the states. On an average there would be (638000 villages + some towns also)/604 districts = about 1100 settlements per district. Uttar Pradesh is the largest state, with 70 districts and 98000 (Oh my goodness, I can't comprehend how many villages there are) villages. On an average, there are 1400 settlements per district in Uttar Pradesh. Some districts are very large and some are small, so this number 1400 can go as high as 2500. I suppose this number 2500 would be the highest number of settlements per district all over India. So, now you can get a rough feel, how large each category is going to be, even if we make 604 categories. DSachan (talk) 14:12, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
No, I was wrong. West Bengal seems to win the race, with 18 districts and 38000 villages, already making it about 2000 settlements, and taking into account the unevenness of areas of districts, this maximum 2500 that I talked about earlier could go to even 3000. DSachan (talk) 14:33, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The Trip

Hi Ernst! We had a great time in H.K. and Macao and I bought a nifty little video camcorder that also takes 9.1 megapixel stills - so have been playing with that and trying to learn how to use it properly. The only trouble is it really looks like a snub-nosed pistol and Jo is frightened of me using it in the U.S. I am in Vancouver at the moment and really enjoying visits with my Mum and sister but have been somewhat under the weather with painful arthritic symptoms as it seems I caught a virus known as Ross River Virus before I left Australia which causes extreme pain in joints - particularly my knees and shoulders - especially at night - which is not what one wants on a trip. Anyway - it is not a dangerous disease and there is nothing that can be done about it except grin and bear it until the symptoms recede (which sometimes takes months). So, I am managing to cope (barely) with copious (excuse the pun) doses of codeine, hot showers and swearing. The days are not too bad and I am enjoying most things (although I find walking any distance really difficult), but the nights are hell. What a bore!!! Anyway, we did get to see St. Francis Xavier's humerus in a 17th century Portuguese church in Goa (I plan to post some photos on the WP when i can get around to it) and saw the new film on the Rolling Stones by Scorcese (sp?) in a cinema in the poshest mall I have ever seen in H.K., and had lots of outstanding meals so all is not lost. We are preparing (or should I say my sister and Jo are preparing?) for my Mum's 94th birthday and my only niece is coming up from Portland Oregon - so it should be a big family affair. I have a number of old friends to see here but in a couple of weeks we head east to the Maritimes and then down to Philadelphia and Washington D.C. - so should have more to report then. Hope you are keeping well and avoiding aching joints! All best wishes, Big Bad John. John Hill (talk) 15:27, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AWB

If you are doing this manually, then it is much easier done with WP:AWB. You can use your regular WP account for these edits. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 15:35, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Burkina Faso

Thanks for the link, I downloaded the big 238-page Word document with all the census info so I'll definitely work on at those templates as well! What are you using a cut-off for town and village status in the Burkina Faso articles, it seems to be 1000+ inhabitants? EJF (talk) 17:34, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh thanks, I think you edit-conflicted me when I was at my talk page, 1000 is what I've been using. Cheers, EJF (talk) 17:34, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
That's great I wouldn't want to have had to change them all again! Hopefully FritzpollBot can help in the effort to give this encyclopaedia proper geographical coverage. Although is it correct that the bot will ignore towns and villages with a disambiguator and they will still need to be done by hand? EJF (talk) 17:39, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Wow, it would be amazing if it can be completed. Geography is a topic which often sadly misses out to Myspace bands and whatever else people write about. I look forward to the day when Wikipedia can be truly representative of the globe. Unfortunately I haven't been helping too much in this effort until now, but I would like to help. I'll have a look at that page you and Fritzpoll and have working at, it looks a bit complicated so I'll have a good read and make sure I'm doing everything right before I attempt to dab everything - I don't want to mess up his bot! Thanks for the advice about the Coren bot, I might have to do that. Although it seems if you put "CorenSearchBot" in the edit summary, it ignores the page. Regards, EJF (talk) 17:56, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
So that would be each town/village in Balé, Banwa, Kossi, Mouhoun, Nayala, and Sourou Provinces would be put in [[Cities, towns and villages in Boucle du Mouhoun region]]? Sub-catting would be good as Category:Cities, towns and villages in Burkina Faso seems to be filling up very well.
I noticed some of Maplandia's information is incorrect, and puts some departments in the wrong province, so I think that needs to be watched when making these stubs. best regards, EJF (talk) 18:20, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
I won't continue with any more stubs on Template:Balé, as I have created all the articles in the departments that Maplandia and the Burkinabé census agree with. I'll wait until we can be sure who is correct before I do any more of them. I'll start in the day or two filling in the uncontroversial departments in the provincial templates. EJF (talk) 18:33, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Yes, certainly. I'll keep on shrinking Category:Cities, towns and villages in Burkina Faso and then I'll definitely help with the provincial articles. Regards, EJF (talk) 19:16, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
No problem, I'll try and get some of the provincial articles done as you say, hopefully I can have them all done within a day or two - probably going offline in an hour or so. The table and infobox seems to really help - I'll try and get more of the province articles up to speed as well. EJF (talk) 19:42, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Exactly. It's a joke - compare for example El Aaiún to Doctor Who - it's ridiculous. The capital of Western Sahara is more important than a fictional TV series and it has nowhere near the same coverage. People just aren't interested in writing articles like Manchester for places in the developing world. It's an awful shame - the reason I started reading Wikipedia in the first place a few years ago was because I'm interested in geography and wanted to learn more about places in the world. It seems to be you and Editorofthewiki putting in most of the work for geography - compare that to the dozens working on just Star Wars! EJF (talk) 20:17, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps someone with AWB could help with the changing of the map-sizes - there are an awful lot to do manually? I'm heading offline soon, I hope to help out again in the morning - and I'll get stuck in to the provinces. Best regards, EJF (talk) 21:03, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ok, so what needs to be done category-wise?

So, for Afghanistan:

- add category Category:Cities, towns and villages in Afghanistan and the relevant province category. e.g Category:Kandahar Province? - Any other categories?

Some requests have been made to add Wikiproject tags to the talkpages, but as this isn't specifically mentioned in the request for approval, and would halve our test article creations, I am reluctant to do this now. Perhaps I will add this to the request later on. I will be home in arounf 3 hours, and will conduct the tests at that time - if things need changing, shout out sooner rather than later, otherwise it will be (100 x number of mistakes) edits to correct it! Fritzpoll (talk) 15:39, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Agreed. However, if you can generate a list of the articles created for the trial run, we could place a request at Wikipedia:Bot requests. Alternately, I could probably tag them myself with such a list in hand. I'm updating the various multinational banners other than Africa to clearly display the seperate countries involved, and that should help at least a little as well. Once I just let it run, it went very rapidly as attested by the times of the contributions. • It looks like there are still quite a few departments missing from the province templates. I think a lot of the images that are used in the province templates are from out-of-date data. I'm using the 2006 census results (published in April 2007) and for example Template:Ziro has an image (from September 2006) only showing 3 departments when there are actually 6. I think this is the case in most provinces so I'll start adding the missing departments to the templates. Regards, EJF (talk) 14:27, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Hey Blof! It's brilliant isn't it? Finally the Preity Zinta article gets the nod for FA. It was about time really! Thank you for recognising my early contributions for that article, really means a lot to me. Of course you also did your part so well done from me. I just awarded a barnstar to Shahid for his brilliant work. Yeh, even I wish I had time to edit more. I really missed working on the articles. Well the good news is that I should (hopefully) be back fully by the beginning of July. I'm in exam mode right now and I won't return to uni till September/October. So how you been? Are you a footie fan? Did you watch the Champions League Final? It was amazing! Hope your well and please send Mr. Bigglesworth my love! -- Pa7 18:07, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes, of course. I wanna finish that list ASAP. It's the old films that are the problem but it should get done. I'm a bit out of touch with everything but I should get into the swing of it soon. Speaking of, I just noticed that I signed my last comment with the year 2007! Doh! -- Pa7 18:18, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Aim to please

  • Your welcome. Also, not to rudely butt into your conversation above (but consinder me nosey), re: Baluch, Afghanistan, I didn't even wade into as there are many of them, all over the country. Perhaps on another day. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 20:46, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
    • But I did do Baluchi, Afghanistan....only 4 of them at GEOnet. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 21:27, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
      • Yes, that presents a problem. In the absence of further subdivision (municipalities?) it is a big problem (Also, even if these exist it is damned hard to find out which place belongs to which municipality as most sources only give the highest division and no information on secondary divisions of a country). I tried to do something of the sort for some Russian placename and someone came along and undid it all claiming that it was non-standard. So much for expending effort trying to do something - there are always more critics than people willing to move things forward. I also did it for some Mexican placename and that has not (yet) been undone. A group of interested editors should try to conceive a plan that isn't arbitrary. The distances from a place may work - which river or other feature each is on may distinguish them (if the info can be found) - perhaps other better differentiators can be used that I haven't thought of (I think I have used directional or alternate names as differentiators)... 17:36, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

BTW, do I still need to add more info to "the missing information at the beginning of 2001" or I can leave it like that??? --Bollywood Dreamz Talk 01:24, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm making progress! I really want to start on Greece but I'm having issues with finding any English sources for some of these, but I'm trying. So watch for some of your stubs to expand :) TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 13:45, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

PS: Benaki Museum, thoughts? It still needs a lot but I think it's better than it was. TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 14:49, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hi again!

Apologies for cluttering up your User page once again! I am getting so forgetful! Also, many thanks for all the great work you have been doing on Tibet-related pages - and the new images are a real plus! Am enjoying Vancouver - spent most of yesterday at the magnificent Museum of Anthropology at the University of B.C. which houses the largest and finest collection of Pacific Northwest Coast Indian art (lots of photos!!!!) I have also bought some excellent new books on Tibet which should help me make lots of corrections and additions when I get back home again in July. Have been pigging out on halibut and salmon (my favourite fishes - and, putting on even more weight which is not helping my arthritic knees - oh well - I wouldn't miss out on the chance for anything!!!! I send my very best wishes. John Hill (talk) 17:16, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Dabbing

Sure, I'll do my best. Unfortunately real life and wikipolitics are keeping my activity down, but I'll help where possible. Is it only necessary to disambiguate the blue links, or do the red links need to be checked at Special:Whatlinkshere as well? EJF (talk) 12:24, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

I know, I placed it under the Faryab sub-heading, as Faryab was done; but Fritzpoll had to move it to make sure it wouldn't interfere with the bot. I will do Ghowr next, in case you are working at Ghazn. Regards, EJF (talk) 13:19, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Do you want the dabs to be at "(place name), Ghor" or "(place name), Ghowr" ? EJF (talk) 13:42, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
I think I will be able to lend a helping hand. I'll do the best I can in dabbing specific articles. Thank you. Acs4b T C U 13:53, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

No problem :) I assume Fritzpoll will be changing "Ghowr" to "Ghor" for those articles? I suppose I'll make a start to page 3, I'm hoping every country isn't as long as Afghanistan! Regards, EJF (talk) 16:33, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

I'll only change things if asked to. Out of interest, why can't you just cut the text from the edit this page box, paste it into Wordpad (which preserves the special characters), do an Edit...Find/Replace and copy the resulting text back, and save the page. Then it's done and I won't have to find out there are errors by accident when reading my watchlist... :) Fritzpoll (talk) 16:51, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I thought you had a special way or something - I didn't know you could do it on Wordpad... I went ahead and changed it. I take it that's fine with you Blofeld? EJF (talk) 17:06, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
I hadn't saved the edit - I saved it now. EJF (talk) 17:23, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Nah - too much code is too difficult :) Glad you understood - it's just easier if I know that things are definitely done before processing Fritzpoll (talk) 18:39, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Well, that's page 3 all done - it took a while! You may want to check that everything is OK here. Adding the hatnotes took me to all sorts of articles - even another enemy of James Bond. I renamed some of the provinces when I was dabbing the articles; Konar→Kunar, Konduz→Kunduz, Nangarha→Nangarhar and Oruzgan→Orūzgān, as the latter spellings are all more commonly used on Wikipedia. Regards, EJF (talk) 20:49, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
You'll all be delighted to hear that Cyprus is now available for checking in addition to Cambodia Fritzpoll (talk) 20:50, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Good stuff, 287 pages could take a while though. Not as many in the Bangladesh category thankfully. I'm starting to get really excited now, I can't wait until the millions of articles can be created! EJF (talk) 21:38, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Glad to hear that! I shall upload more lists over the next few hours, but tomorrow/Sunday, I shall probably start creating articles. Just waiting for the go on the category front Fritzpoll (talk) 21:59, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] I am in

Great news, and congrats to you. All your hard work finally turned into a success, Wikipedia is soon going to have a major upgrade, a much needed one. Yes, count me in. But, I don't get this dabbing thing, could you briefly explain to me what needs to be done, or provide me some link, where I can read. I thought the bot was going to create everything, do we have to manually do something as well? Thanks. DSachan (talk) 12:42, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

I can help here as the bot operator - if you go to the link Blofeld sent you, you'll have access to a series of lists. You just need to check the lists, mostly for blue-links. If the link does not point to an article about the specific place, then the link needs to be changed to disambiguate. So if the is an article on "Fritzpolltown", but it isn't about "FritzpollTown" in the Fritzpollian Empire, you need to change the link to something like "Fritzpolltown, Fritzpollian Empire". Blofeld will probaly clarify further Fritzpoll (talk) 12:46, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
For example, if I go to the second blue link that is 'Kariz' in Afghanistan list page 2, I find it not pointing to an article but rather to a disambiguation page, where I find further red links. But since this is a blue link for the bot, the bot is anyway not going to create those articles, which are in disambiguation page, so how does it help the bot? I still did not understand it properly, I think. DSachan (talk) 13:04, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
What I notice is that you have changes kariz link to kariz, Afghanistan, so new article will be by this name, but Afghanistan has many places of the name Kariz, all in the different provinces according to Kariz page, so shouldn't you have changed the kariz page in list 2 to the article of title may be 'Kariz, Faryad' or something like that. I want to make it sure, before I go for it. DSachan (talk) 13:16, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, that's right now. I think I am gonna start Armenia. There is only one page of it and I think I can start there. DSachan (talk) 13:21, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Not a problem, could you please check if I did it correctly with Arai in Armenia page. The provinces are given in the same line later for each settlements. I also find a page Ararat, Armenia. Shouldn't this be moved to Ararat, Ararat page, because Ararat city lies in Ararat province. What do you think? DSachan (talk) 13:30, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
It is not the second name in the line that I was referring to, it was the 2nd last name in the line. If you notice closely, Yerevan is written in the line of Arai, which happens to be the province where Arai is located, similarly with all settlements in the list. Also as you said the article name should be place, province rather than place, country, so I think Arai, Yerevan was right. DSachan (talk) 13:39, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Offering a hand...

Notice you're changing Bamian to Bamyan by hand - I can do this very quickly in one edit. Would you like me to do this? Fritzpoll (talk) 12:52, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding the bot

Judging from the sources this bot is going to use, the outcome is going to be a complete mess. I don't know about other countries, but please keep this bot away from articles on Russian inhabited localities. I am currently working on a database that would include all Russian inhabited localities, but I don't expect it to be finished for another year or so (it is about 35% complete now, covering ~55,000 inhabited localities). The database, for the most part, draws the information from the primary sources, i.e., from the legislative documents of the Russian federal subjects, as well as from the offical reference materials (not available online) published by the governments of the federal subjects. These sources are far more complete and accurate than anything currently available online (especially any English-language sources). Can the bot tackle the issues of romanization? How is it going to handle duplicate titles (of the 55,000+ places in my database about half have duplicate names!)? I don't know anyone who would be looking forward to having to clean up 150,000+ stubs on Russian places after the bot is done with them (I am yet to clean up this and this mess (and there's more), which was the outcome of someone else trying to automate the process. It took me weeks to clean up a few other cats in a similar state, and that was only a hundred something articles. Imagine the magnitude of the disaster when such "articles" start to multiply into thousands.

All in all, if I could shoot this bot on sight, I would do so. Nothing personal, I just don't believe it is a good idea. I hope you understand. If you are intent to continue with this bot, please keep its scope to countries where no editors are actively working on the subject of populated places (and Russia is not one of them). No bot will ever be as good as humans, and this one is going to create more problems than it is going to solve. Please let me know if you need further information. Thanks.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 14:08, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

(after edit conflict) Thanks. I would also suggest that before the bot starts working on any new country, a notification is posted on an appropriate portal's noticeboard. This way editors working on coverage of that particular country would have a chance to comment if they immediately see any problems before the bot screws anything up.
As for Russia, yes, I will be able to provide complete coverage, but, judging from my current pace, I will need at least a year to complete the database (providing there are no unexpected delays). I, of course, have nothing against adding the articles/stubs manually, but I don't believe any bot would be able to consider all of the peculiarities of the Russian administrative and municipal structure (unless such a bot is written specifically for that purpose, which yours is not). Whatever the bot screws up may not be such a problem for any other countries, but the scope for Russia is vast indeed, and quite far from being straightforward, so even minor mistakes (especially transliteration, because the bot is going to use not the original Russian names, but names already romanized by someone else, with that romanization not exactly matching our guidelines) may lead to the necessity of doing the cleanup on a massive scale, thus completely negating and outweighing any bot's benefit. What's more, just because the bot uses the best sources available to it does not mean there are no better sources available to human editors. Again, thanks for your understanding. I'm sure the bot will be kept busy even if it'll only have to cover 50% of those 1.8 million places. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 14:43, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, Russia already has some pretty decent coverage in Wikipedia, as far as cities/towns and urban-type settlements go. Rural localities are not well-covered at all, but that's mostly because very little can be said about them apart from their location and where they fall in the administrative and municipal structure (here is a typical example). Regardless, these two issues are precisely what my database aims to cover. I will need bot's assistance once the database is complete, but that will not happen soon, and the task will definitely need a specialized bot (i.e., working only on Russian places). If you or Fritz are around by that time, I'll sure let you know when bot assistance is going to be needed. For now, runnig a bot for Russia is premature. Thanks again for your understanding. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:14, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Recatting

I'll try and get around to some recatting tonight or tomorrow, when I have the chance. I'll do a little disambiguation now, soon as I can. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 14:29, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Well... Gelagphug redirects to Sarpang District, as an example. Nearly all of the districts are in similar shape. I can disambiguate after lunch, if I get the chance. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 16:29, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
OK, but I'm going to have to do them by hand, then. Unless you know of a way to get the bot to override the redirects. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:08, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
So I see, immediately after posting here. You're quick. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:10, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
I think that'll be it for me today, though. Things are picking up around here. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 17:19, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Bot approved: dabbing help needed

Firstly, it was a pleasant surprise to see your message about the bot's approval. I'm sorry that I couldn't add much to the bot approval discussion.

Anyways, your message couldn't really help me in seeing what help was required from me. Please do let me know in a little more detail as to how I can help. Cheers! Mspraveen (talk) 15:38, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Maps of Russia

I do have some skills working with the maps, but I'm afraid I'm not the person to talk to when it comes to creating them from scratch. The very least we need is the federal subject maps for European and Asian parts of the country, and then separate maps for each federal subject are definitely in order. I think this was brought up before, but at the time nobody was able to produce such a set. If you happen to know someone willing to work on this, that person's efforts will definitely not go unappreciated.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 15:46, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Help

Certainly willing and able. However the current layout is not helpful to finding dabs that we can deal with, full alphabetical lists so that Foo in province A is next to Foo in province B is much better, then we know to dab Foo, A and Foo, B. Will these lists be presented that way or must we be expected to copy these to excel and sort them ourselves? Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:17, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

But the bot, after creating Foo, A at Foo, will not process Foo, B, unless ahead of time, we can dab them, which may require us to create pure redlink dab pages in the interim Foo to hold these - which can be added to when Foo is found in another country altogether (showing a bluelink which will tell editors that another dab is required). I think sorting excel-wise is in order and I'll just post these somewhere not to be used as the place to make changes, but to process things. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:24, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Another thing: how do we know what has been reviewed? I am starting Armenia, but it looks like someone has already done some (all?) the work. Am I wasting my time there? I hope not. Anyway, look what I've done with Agarak (disambiguation), I think these will be required wherever we dab. Any thoughts? Carlossuarez46 (talk) 18:29, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

I left a message for him. Anyway, we should have some instructions for helpers. When a dab is required because of blue link, some pointer (hat dab/dab page) should be left/created so that we don't lose that information. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 19:04, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

posted reply - will sort out instructions at upload Fritzpoll (talk) 19:07, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
  • I just started on the Armenia talk page of the problem ones there; will copy over, if you don't mind me adding to your "to do"s... :-O. By the way, using Geonet, I gather that there will be 4,000,000 settlements if that's the source. Is it? And where are the data for subregions coming from? Carlossuarez46 (talk) 19:45, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Half?

We've only got around 2.5 million articles. I'm guessing that there will maybe be several more than that of the various locations. I have a feeling that this will maybe be somewhere between 66% to 90% of the total article count, not just a measly 50%. John Carter (talk) 19:16, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Cambodia Dabbing

I have finished it. Basically not much was to be done, Most of the places were not present in Wikipedia, so were red linked. But one problem that I see is that Cambodia has several places with the same name, in fact almost all the places have other places with similar name, which freaks me out. What is to be done for them? They are all red linked. If we have to do something for them as well, then Dabbing is far from finished, I would say. DSachan (talk) 12:14, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

The dabbing is done, but many things still need fixing to do with the names - they have weird elements, such as numbers in brackets, and there is still the problem of multiple identical names. I think we may need to unmark these as done, otherwise other volunteers will overlook this Fritzpoll (talk) 12:35, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Ok, I see. I think you can remove the 'dabbing done' marks, and write that blue links have been checked, only red links with such weird elements need checking (which is a lot of work, I guess). DSachan (talk) 12:46, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah - reading over my last words, I look a little unappreciative - this was not my intention. They are big jobs, unfortunately, but quicker than inventing all the articles by hand! Thanks for your help so far - I hope you can keep helping! Fritzpoll (talk) 12:51, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
No problem, sorry for the mess up. Now I understand more what is needed, mistakes serve important role in learning. :) - DSachan (talk) 16:03, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
