Hi Jimbo. I was thinking that some sort of translation service would be extremely useful to the wiki project. One of the difficulties in accessing information is because it is in a different language particularly for more obscure places. While there are certain translation services on the web such as babelfish etc they only cover a handful of languages and of course wikipedia is in 253 different languages. I've noticed when developing some articles on towns in SLovakia and Hungary and Finland etc that all the information on them I could find to expand them was in abundance in slovak or Magyar but not in english. Then when I googled to try to get some sort of free translation from one of these languages it didn't exist or you had to pay a high amount to obtian a package even for one of them. Wouldn't this be a great thing if the wiki was able to take it a step further and develop its own translation technology system and covers tens of languages which you wouldn't be able to translate otherwise. This would be not only be useful as an educational tool, but would be extremely useful when translating articles from other wikipedias too and might increase the rate at which articles become developed between wikipedias. I for one know if we had this sort of technology I would be looking to translate valuable articles from other wikipedias striahgt into english. Other wikipedias could do exactly the same and translate into their own languages from english etc.
