[edit] Overview
Aside from hints from the titles of individual levels of some campaigns, the game has no story; the player's sole objective is to kill everyone in the vicinity, which allows the player to advance to the next level for more carnage. It is a 2D game with pseudo-3D walls which can vary in height depending on the level. A darkness system simulates realistic fog of war—places out of the player's sight are blackened, so characters outside of the player's line of sight are thus invisible.
Tapan Kaikki: Bloodshed offers a single-player mode with various campaigns, or episodes, and multiplayer offering both cooperative and deathmatch modes; games played in deathmatch have their own special arenas, while cooperative modes are played using the same level sets for the single-player mode.
[edit] Gameplay
When an episode is started, the player begins empty-handed, but weapons can be found from the ground. Every weapon has a limited amount of ammunition, but more can be found throughout the level, or purchased from a shop which is accessed between levels (the shop is inaccessible in the deathmatch mode). The game offers a variety of enemies that have weapons ranging from pistols to rocket launchers and flamethrowers.
The player can also get various weapons, either from the ground or by purchasing them from a shop by using money, which can be found on the ground but is usually earned by killing enemies; the player is therefore a mercenary. Completion of a level under a time limit can also earn the player extra money.
There are many different campaigns available, each having different grades of difficulty.
[edit] Features
In addition to its fog of war effect, Tapan Kaikki: Bloodshed has flickering ceiling lights as well as loose steam; this gas has been used to simulate vents from dilapidated buildings, or natural gas from volcanic cracks in the earth. The dominating aspect of the game, however, is its improvisation of enemies; in nearly all of its episodes, enemies are scattered randomly by the game throughout a level. The game also promotes stealth; players can approach unaware enemies from behind, and enemies can be diverted by sounds, such as gunshots.
The game also comes bundled with a map editor that allows players to create their own maps, for deathmatch, single campaign levels, or even complete episodes of their own. The official map editor can be a bit painfully slow to use at times, but there are some unofficial map editors also available, and creating a map using one of them can be a lot faster than using the official editor. Editors allow a dynamic selection of textures for the ground and walls, the editing of wall heights, steam placement (whose direction and length can be specified), light placement (whose size can be specified), enemy placement (or automatic randomization), player spawn point placement, object placement (or automatic randomization), and more.
