Niflheim: Blood & Bullets is the 2008 upcoming Australian war-horror film currently in Pre-production by Codename V Productions[1]. Written and directed by newcomer Nathaniel Iwaszko, it follows a military squad who is sent on a rescue operation during a fictional world war set in modern times. It is the first of three planned features, which will follow the fictional war until its final days.[2]
As an independent war film, Niflheim is unconventional by Australian filmmaking standards. Being produced without government funding on a low budget, the filmmakers aim to create a film that can compete in international markets and become financially profitable. Yet to be released, the film is to begin principle photography in mid 2008.[3]

[edit] Synopsis
In a world plunged into the dystopian darkness of a global conflict, an international draft has occurred for any person over the age of eighteen. Sent into the depth of battle with a minuscule amount of training, soldier after soldier is lost, but the draft continues.
The Aesir, a squad of new recruits and battle hardened veterans alike, take the war one day at a time, doing their best to survive the massacre and live to see tomorrow. Jason Hermod, a recently drafted private, feels no different. He hopes to finish out his days and return home, having done his duty.
During a particularly gruelling battle on the northern front, in which many members of the squad are killed in action, Jason gets word that his younger sister, a fellow draftee, has become lost in the depth of the jungle. Wrecked with despair, and no longer able to function properly on the battlefield, his commanding officer Sargent John Wodan, makes sure his squad is in charge of the rescue mission.
And so begins Operation Baldur. The mission is simple; locate the lost squad, rescue survivors and return to camp. What’s left of the Aesir are transported as close as they can to the last known whereabouts of the lost squad. At first, everything seems to move smoothly enough, but as the Aesir slowly make the way into the depth of the jungle, it becomes clear there is something watching, something waiting, something wicked.
When night falls, the soldiers begin to vanish, one by one. All the bullets in the world can’t stop this darkness that descends upon them. But Jason is determined to find his sister. He knows that she is alive. Alone in the dark, he pushes on. Ready for anything. [4]

[edit] Norse Mythology
Although little is known of the impact that Norse mythology has on the film, it is clear already that the film is to be littered with references to it. Some of the more obvious references include the name of the film (Niflheim), the squad (The Aesir), the name of the operation (Baldur) and almost all of the characters. It is currently unknown if the film will be a modern re-telling of any older Norse myth.
