[edit] Origin and recording
"Blood" was one of the songs the band produced during the first week of recording for Vs.[1] Frontman Eddie Vedder decided to keep his reference vocal take for the finished version.[2]
[edit] Composition
It is one of the most aggressive songs on the album and includes elements of funk. At one point in the song lead singer Eddie Vedder lets out a 12-second scream.[3]
[edit] Reception
"Blood" was described as a song "of a kind of ritual passion, tapping into something truly wild" in Rolling Stone magazine's review of Vs.[4]
[edit] Lyrical meaning
The lyrics of the song protest media exploitation. It is believed that the line "Spin me round, roll me over, fuckin' circus" references the music magazines Spin, Rolling Stone, and Circus.
[edit] Live performances
The song was premiered live at the band's May 13, 1993 concert in San Francisco, California.[5] Live performances of "Blood" can be found on the "Daughter" single, the "Dissident"/Live in Atlanta box set, and the Live at the Gorge 05/06 box set. A performance of the song is also included on the DVD Immagine In Cornice. On numerous occasions when performing "Blood" live, Pearl Jam has tagged George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" on to the song.
