She is a devout Catholic as well as her family. Samir is a football player and a skilled musician who has done pot before, had sex with his girlfriend Paula, and been drunk on numerous occasions. While exchanging stories Sami recollects when, sophomore year, several friends of his ( Monica, Eddie, Mac, Ryan, Lynn) were killed in a tragic accident he witnessed and almost was a part of. (Flashback) Sami, Julie, unamed girl, Lynn and Ryan are outside in the parking lot talking to Monica in her car when Eddie and Mac hop in, on the way to a restaurant by school, "Teddy's". They urge the four to get in, because it is faster than walking. Lynn and Ryan get in, and hey attempt to convince and pull Julie in with them. She laughingly refuses, and the three, Sami, Julie and the unamed girl are later seen walking down the suburb street when Monica's car goes roaring with music and speed past them. They wave as Lynn waves out the window and Ryan jokingly flicks them off. The car crosses an intersection in the suburb and is plowed over by a garbage truck. The car is demolished instantly and pushed off screen. The three stand in shock. (End). Sami released his story to his group and is comforted by them, especially Miriam. She later finds him alone and talks to him. They soon become good friends, and it is obvious to the reader that nothin romantic could exist between them. He tells her all about his girlfriend Paula and how she and he love each other. After the retreat when Sami, a Muslim, finds God in his life and is happiest and at the peak of his life, Paula calls him intears and tells him what she did while he was gone. Although the two have been going out for three years, she kissed a close friend of his when he was on the retreat. Sami calls Miriam and she helps him out.

(Flashback) Sami is at a party sophomore year before Monika, Eddie, Lynn, Mac and Ryan are killed are is drinking with several people. The party is at Abigail Sandehl's house, and she flirts with Sami before Paula coms over. Sami, buzzed, tries to act polite to her and Abigail takes it the wrong way. She slaps him and leaves him alone with Paula. The two talk for a long time and get drunker. Several others are drunk and Sami sees a girl run, coherently, into the house, grab her purse, then speed away in her car. He doesn't get a good feeling from this, and ask a girl, Linda, if any cops are in the area. She replies that she doesn't think so, then they hear sirens. The partygoers scramble, and Abigail is accidentaly pushed to the groupd by Sami. This results in her being caught by the police along with several others and her lifelong hatred for Sami and Paula. Sami runs with Paula, Linda, a boy named Franc and a pair of twins, Harry and Don. Don is too drunk and slows up, getting caught by the cops. Harry gets seperated from the others in the desert and Franc goes back to the house to try and get his car so he can pick them all up. After 15 minutes hiding in a small guesthouse owned by Abigail's neighbor, Linda also goes back. Sami and Paula are alone by themselves and begin their relationship by kissing and eventually having sex on the bed. When Linda returns she sees them having sex and leaves with Franc without them. Sami knows that she saw them but doesnt care.)

Sami tells Miriam this and he cries to her. He tells her about how he knew who had called in the cops and how she had She comforts him and he decides not to go to prom with Paula. Sami eventually goes with Miriam instead, just as friends. Miriam agrees and the have a wonderful time together, except at an afterparty. A girl, Abigail, hosts a large party at her house, and Miriam sees Sami hold a beer for a girl while she gets her boyfriend. Miriam was about to tell him to take her home when she sees him holding the beer. She feels betrayed after he opened up to her that he would go back to his old habits so easily. She becomes furious, but relents when Sami tells her it was a mistake and that the beer belonged to the girl, not him. She forgives him, and they continue being good friends. (Time shift ahead 5 months). It is senior year, and Sami is at school after a jazz band competition. He is about to leave when he notices a classmate of his, Lauren, ascend the rooftop stairs. He follows her, and confronts her. Lauren turns to him in tears and tells him she is about to end it all. He convinces her not to jump, although she almost does. She tells him, sobbing that her father has sexually abused her since her mother divorced him and that she is intermittantly rejected at school. With Sami's help, Lauren's dad is put away and she is raised by a loving foster family. Sami is a hero, and outshadows Miriam, who is nontheless proud of him. ( Sharon, Sami's sister, is confronted by a large number of racist citizens after an attack on the United States Embassy in Pakistan) She is racially marginalized, moves back to her family's city for a while, taking a break from college. Miriam helps Sharon out, but has problems of her own when Randy, her brother, is bullied at school. Later Sami is lifting in a gym when he sees Ruben, a friend of him, run inside and urge him to follow him. He does so, and they go to Janetje's house. She is shaken, and Ruben, a close friend of her host-sister, Kelly, tries to comfort her. Sami doesn't understand until Kelly tells him that a friend of hers was shot while visiting a friend in Egypt. She is devastated, and Sami and Miriam stay by her side until she falls asleep when Kelly, Ruben and Jill leave. They are alone together, with Janetje asleep, and Sami reminds her that every time he had sex with Paula he felt awful afterwards. She says she would never do that until marriage and Sami tells her he was as good a person as her. Miriam tells him that he is set to be a leader on the retreat in March, one year from their retreat.

At school, Anatale, "uh-natalie", returns from the November retreat all huggy and hugs Sami and Miriam along with several other people. She apologizes for all her actions towards Sami and his arabic culture. He is not so keen to forgive her, but does. Later that day, he and Anatale and several other people, including the unamed girl, attend a party hosted by Judith. There is no alcohol and Anatale tells Sami that she used to be addicted to alcohol but isn't anymore and got her black expedition back. Abigail shows up with her possee and is bummed to find no alcohol. She calls Judith several bad names until Sami steps in. He pushed her in the pool and tells her that he is not afraid of her. She screams at him and leaves and is later arrested on DUI charges. Later at school, several of Sami's friends, including Mike, jokingly call him gay because he helps out so many girls - Miriam, Janetje, Judith, Anatale, Lauren, Julie, Jill. Miriam tells him that they are just jealous that they have no friends and that of all of them, he was one of the few who actually had a date for prom. Later Paula comes to Sami and wants to be his girlfriend again. Before accepting, he calls Miriam, who, unusually brutal, tells him to decline ( Miriam starts to feel that she has feelings for Sami, but does not reveal them becuase she just wants to remain friends). That week, Sami goes to work, delivering pizzas, and decides to quit the following week. He is driving along a busy road when a large black vehicle slams into him, causing him to flip and roll. He is taken to the hospital, and is first visited by Miriam, who works as an apprentice there. She rushs to him, but is pulled away by Doctor Smith. His family comes, and Miriam is allowed to stay by his side. He later dies in the hospital, but not before telling Miriam that he loves her, not as a couple love, but love as in friendship and one of the greatest people he had ever met. Miriam goes into shock after hearing Sami is dead. She is told by Sharon while she is parked in her car after seeing a movie with Judith. She drops her phone and falls forward, her head hitting the horn, which honks for a long time as Miriam passes out. It is later revealed that Anatale crashed into Sami, because Miriam recognized her liscence plate along with her black expedition. Anatale says it was an accident, which it was. An old man reered right in front of her and she veered off, hitting Sami. The old man sped away, unaware of anything going on, and was later arrested. No charges are pressed for Anatale, who goes into a coma, unable to deal with the stress of killing Sami. Miriam goes to the Abdelatif house, and sits in Sami's room with Walid, his brother, who calls himself "Will". He says that Sami talked about her all the time and that he used to tease him for having a girlfriend. When Will leaves Miriam finds a notebok which Sami wrote in. He meant to send it to his cousin Asad in Egypt but never did. She reads it and discovers that he also had feelings for her and that he only wanted to remain friends. She breaks down and cries on his pillow, smelling it because it reminds her of him.

A few months later, Miriam is givng a talk to the retreatants, dressed in black, telling them everything about Sami. She tears after telling them that Sami told her that he loved her, and the unamed girl goes up to comfort her.
