Talk:Blanka
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I think this article is flawed in the sense that, for one, it states that Blanka "encountered the outside world for the first time" after meeting Jimmy. However, wasn't Blanka living a normal life in the "outside world" up until his untimely plane crash?
-
- Blanka was just a child when the plane crashed so he did not know much about the outside world.
Also, it states that Blanka's mother recognized him by his anklets. But these anklets are not referenced anywhere else in the article. I'm curious about their origins, and adding this type of detail would really give your article more legitimacy.
-
- The Anklets were worn by Blanka when the plane crashed and he kept them on as he grew up in the jungle. His mother recognised him by them in the SSF2 ending.
Finally, it really seems like an unbelievable coincidence that his mother just so happens to enjoy watching World Warrior competitions.
-
- Yup it's coincidence that his mother was there. That's what you get from a 1990s video game plot.
On the subject of the anklets, I would like to add that, if they were given to him by his mother before the tragic, life-changing event of the untimely plane crash, then they would be of a size meant for a young boy. But how could a young boy's anklets fit on this enormous green fighting warrior? Also, anklets are for girls, so it could be said that Blanka is gay.
- That's absurd. He lived in the jungle so he can hardly be expected to know that wearing anklets is for girls.
-
- I'm not even going to comment on the Homophobic remarks.
There's one important thing this article doesn't explain: Why in the world is Blanka GREEN?! To my knowledge there are no green humans, either in real life or in the SF world. Edrigu 20:59, 5 September 2005 (UTC)
Well, if he can "learn bioelectricity" from eels, he can learn how to be green from lizards.
-
- His colour change was pure fantasy writing. Apparently in a world where men can throw balls of fire they can also be green.
I still prefer to think Blanka is in fact Charlie Blanka, aprisioned and tranformed by M.Bison (Vega), before the movie, the magazines already tolds that. (Marcelo) 6 october 2005
-
- No they did not. NEVER has there been so much as a HINT that Blanka and Charlie have anything to do with each other. It is total and utter bull**** created by the worst movie adaptation ever made. --DanHibiki 21:48, 18 November 2005 (UTC)
For anyone still intrested here is a good link to Blanka's ending: SF2 ending

[edit] Blanka's History section
I suggest that somebody with enough time to fix the History section of Blanka. Not only is it messy and difficult to follow, it also contains some irrelevant contents. One example of what need to be fixed in that section would be "In Street Fighter Alpha 3, his character design was again changed to make him look less ferocious-looking." In my opinion, the statement is not relevant and is an original research, but also the Blanka page already has Characteristic section. I would appreciate your contributions. [edit] Blanka's Name
I have a small bone to pick with the etymology of his name.
First, "hombre blanco" is Spanish. In Brazil they speak Portuguese. So, the term "homem branco" should be used.
Next, that nickname in either language means "white man." Why the color white? He is green. Was he white before? Even if, he wouldn't be the "only white man" in Brazil.
Lastly, the letter "a" at the end of nouns and adjectives and the like (with few exceptions) always refers to someone or something feminine in both Spanish and Portuguese. In terms of the word for "white" ("blanco or branco"), no male would ever be referred to with the feminine ending, unless possibly to imply so kind of innuendo. And even then only maybe. This is actually something I've been wondering for years.
- "no male would ever be referred to with the feminine ending, unless possibly to imply some kind of innuendo." Maybe it's because he wore those anklets. :)
- All these plot holes tell me one thing: videogames are videogames, and most of them are not very well written. So maybe we don't need a separate article for every contrived back-story on every videogame character ever made. Hmm... Kafziel 19:28, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
- I'm no expert in spanish languages, but I believe that this information citation was a error on the creators. Even though it may be gramattically incorrect, its still established "canon" from CAPCOM and we cannot really dispute that. -MegamanZero|Talk 19:38, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
I'm an anonymous portuguese user just coming by.. The name Blanka (or Branca, as you wish), comes from the simple fact that "branca" besides being an adjective (color) for something feminine, also stands for loss of memory. I guess that explains why he's called Blanka. -Demihuman, JNR
-
- In japanese, "Blanka" is spelled (in katakana) as BU-RA-N-KA, which is the same spelling for the word "Branca". This enforces the fact that the original name for the character was actually "Branca" but someone from Capcom Japan did a mistake in the romanization of the name. This is not the first time Capcom Japan did it, as it happenned previously with Andore (Andre) and Rolento (Laurent), from the Final Fight series. By the way, I remember early screenshots for the Genesis port of SF2:CE and Blanka was displayed as "Branka". -XGargoyle
[edit] Blanka's Color
I know the guy is green like EVERYWHERE else, but his default color was yellow in the original Street Fighter 2. (References: [1] [2]) Anyone know why?
- It's really more of a light green than yellow. Yellowish green, perhaps. Jacquismo 00:14, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Blanka's Country of Birth
Why is it stated that blanka was born in brazil? Where do you get this information, he comes from Brazil but how do we know where he was born. Wouldn't he be Thai because his mother is Thai? The game only states that his plane crashed over Brazil and that's it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.56.69.88 (talk) 07:05, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- I've looked into it and his birthplace is not explicitly stated. Presuming him to be Thai is original research, so I just removed it. JuJube (talk) 07:43, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Blanka's inspiration
Blanka is a huge rip off of The Amazon from the NES game Pro Wrestling. Does anyone disagree? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.57.19.126 (talk • contribs)
- Yes. Danny Lilithborne 08:27, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
- For those who don't know of The Amazon, he is basically green with orange hair, has sharp teeth, and bites his opponents. Does this sound anything like someone we all know? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.57.19.126 (talk • contribs)
- He also looks like the Swamp Thing. Danny Lilithborne 08:54, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
- The swamp thing is not from the Amazon, does not have orange hair or sharp teeth, and does not bite opponents. Take a look at a clip of Pro Wrestling [3] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.57.19.126 (talk • contribs)
- I know the Amazon bites his opponents. My response is a lukewarm "So what?" In any case, since it's all speculation, it doesn't go in the main article. Danny Lilithborne 09:25, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
- There's more to it than just speculation, there are obvious similarities that are at the least mentionable regardless of how lukewarm you are. Blanka bit off of The Amazon(No pun intended). It doesn't have to be put like that but let's not be ignorant of an apparent stereotype that the Japanese had about people from the Amazon. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.57.19.126 (talk • contribs)
- Read WP:V and drop it, please. I'm tired. Danny Lilithborne 10:03, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
- I've only stated facts about the two characters appearances. Thats all that has to be in the article let the readers make their own judgements, instead of you making the judgements for them. Have you read Fei long's article, it starts out talking about his similarities to Bruce Lee even though Capcom has never made any official statments. I think you should clean up that article and remove all of the Bruce Lee references. Almost every character's article talks about who they look like, Ryu and Ryo, and who they are similar to. What harm is it to say that Blanka bears a striking resemblance to The Amazon?
- he looks nothing like blanka. amazon is a green man who bites, and (presumably) from brazil, thats about where it ends. he does not leap, he is not built like a monster, he does not electricute, he has no ankle things, and according to that youtube video, has pink hair, which isn't in a style anything like blankas. they fight in totally different ways too. Its like saying Amazon was inspired by Mike Tyson (if that were chronologically possible). hes a man from the americas who bites, and fights.
[edit] In Summary
Let's see if I have this right. Blanka is an inexplicably-pigmented wild man from Brazil who has a name with an irreconcilable etymology, and _has_ a name despite being unable to speak human language for most of his life. He's larger than any normal human, yet wears anklets that he was given as a small child, and gained bioelectricity from electric eels just by watching them. ... Any wonder he's always been my favorite SF character? ^_^
Here here! I agree! No wonder he gets all the ladies. Bokan (talk) 18:43, 15 March 2008 (UTC)Bokan
Blanka's green due to plant chlorophyll. This is stated in the book SFII: Mysteries of the Hadouken.Vasili10 01:59, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
