Blaze the Cat (ブレイズ ・ザ ・キャット Bureizu za Kyatto?) is a fictional character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, created by Sonic Team and owned by Sega. She made her debut in the Nintendo DS video game, Sonic Rush. Blaze is a lavender, female anthropomorphic cat with yellow eyes.

She is a princess and the defender of the Sol Emeralds, a role similar to that held by Knuckles. Blaze is sometimes referred to as a queen; She is referred to as "queen Blaze the Cat" on the official Sega of America Sonic mini site, Sonic Central,[2] as well as the next [3] Sonic the Hedgehog game website. However, in Japanese, her title is 皇女 kōjo,[1] which translates as "imperial princess," (she is also called princess in Sonic Rush Adventure).[4]

Her coat that she wears covers the part of her body that is engulfed by flames. She wears gloves similar to those worn by Sonic, only with fuzzy lining on the cuffs. Her shoes have the same motif as Sonic's, but they also have fuzzy lining and are high-heeled. She also wears a purple coat, lined at the neck with gold (possibly a necklace) and at the bottom with red, and a pair of white tights. She has a ponytail, and a jewel-like red orb is present on her forehead.[5]

In the English version of the games, Blaze is voiced by Bella Hudson.

Blaze and Sonic are the only playable characters in Sonic Rush, the game in which Blaze debuted.[6][7]According to the storyline of the game, Blaze is a princess from another dimension, and the guardian of the Sol Emeralds.[8] Throughout the game, she learns the meaning of friendship from Sonic and his friends, especially Cream the Rabbit. Cream opens her up to the world and the two become close friends. It is through the power of friendship that she realizes the true powers of the Sol Emeralds and transforms into "Burning Blaze" as a product of the Sol Emeralds, to help Super Sonic stop Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega from taking over the universe. After Sonic and Blaze finish their adventure, they promise to see each other again and say their goodbyes as they shake hands.

[edit] Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

Blaze appears in the 15th Anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog.[9] This envisioning of Blaze hails from the future. In the future, she constantly fights the fiery being Iblis, along with her life-long friend, Silver the Hedgehog. This is likely a completely different incarnation of the character, as she shows no connection to the other dimension or her royal heritage, although she does show some interest the first time Sonic is mentioned to her and Silver in the game, implying it may be possible that this is the same Blaze. Blaze and Silver are very good friends, this may support that they meet when they were little, but it is unknown. It should also be noted that only Blaze could seal Iblis inside her instead of Silver, just like Princess Elise, which also supports Blaze has some royal heritage. It should also be noted that Blaze asks Silver to send her to another dimension at the end of Silver's story using Chaos Control, with Blaze vanishing, presumably doing it herself.[10]

[edit] Sonic Rush Adventure

Blaze returns in the sequel to Sonic Rush, Sonic Rush Adventure, as a playable character,[11] once again appearing in her royal alternate dimension incarnation. She runs into Sonic once again right after Whisker, a robotic pirate that stole her precious Jeweled Scepter, both of them surprised to see each other. Blaze believes that Sonic and Tails were brought to her dimension by both sets of the Chaos and Sol Emeralds. Blaze eventually drives Marine away by calling her a nuisance to make her remain behind. By the end of the game Blaze says goodbye to Sonic once again and shake hands like they did before.

[edit] Other games

Blaze appears in Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rivals 2 as a cameo in one of the games collectible cards.

Blaze is a playable character in Sonic and the Secret Rings the games party mode. She is unlocked after the player collects 105 fire souls.[12]

Blaze is a playable character in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games , although her outfit is different. Instead of her princess clothes, she wears midriff-baring sport clothing. In the "Character Selection" screen, she is an "All-Around" character.[13]

Blaze is an unlockable character in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity.[14] She is a Speed Type character and her default gear is Flame Lance, which can grind on rails.

Blaze makes a cameo in the Green Hill court in Sega Superstars Tennis as shown in a screenshot.[15]

Blaze appears as a trophy and a collectible sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

[edit] Comic appearances

Blaze first appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series,[16] when she comes to Knothole seeking the "Blue One" who is Sonic. However, she is captured by robots patrolling for Eggman. When she awakens, she is enraged to find that her captors are running tests on her and ignites her flames. Sonic arrives, seeking the robots, and finds the antagonized Blaze. The two briefly engage in a battle. Sonic was able to defeat her pyrokinetic abilities by running around her at high speed, until it created a vacuum in which her fire could not sustain itself due to lack of oxygen and Blaze herself almost passes out. Later, realizing her mistake, Blaze gives a rather cryptic message about looking for him again before disappearing.

[edit] Portrayal

Blaze is portrayed as withdrawn and disciplined when interacting with strangers, though more intimate towards friends. Normally calm, she is actually more emotional than generally shown. In the games, she is dedicated to protecting the Sol Emeralds as is her role as a priestess.[17][18]

It is also revealed in Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure that she is afraid of heights.[19]

[edit] Abilities

Blaze is a pyrokinetic, using her ability to manipulate fire and her claws, jumps, and kicks to fend off her enemies. She also uses her pyrokinetic abilities to propel herself in different directions and in Sonic Rush Adventure to protect herself from flames. Blaze turns into a fiery tornado when jumping, similar to Espio the Chameleon in Knuckles Chaotix, and does not keep speed or go faster. Despite the speed difference, both her blazing tornado state and the traditional "spin ball" forms of other characters function relatively the same. Blaze is uses her pyrokinesis to send different fire attacks from long range, such as blasts of fire and infusing her fire into her physical attacks at close range. She once described herself as one whose soul is alit with flame.

In Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure, she uses the Sol Emeralds to transform into Burning Blaze.[1] Blaze's lavender fur becomes pink, and the details on the tip of her ponytail are erased. Her jacket and the tip of her tail become red, and the bottom rim of her jacket turns yellow. The cuffs on her gloves and shoes are engulfed in pink flames, and she is surrounded by an aura of fire.
