Blake Baronets
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Three Baronetcies have been created for members of the Blake family.
The Baronetcy of Blake of Menlough, Galway was created in the Baronetage of Ireland on 10 July 1622 for Valentine Blake (Mayor of Galway in 1611 and 1630) whose grandfather Thomas (d 1574) had preceded him as Mayor. This Baronetcy is extant.
The Baronetcy of Blake of Twizell Castle was created in the Baronetcy of Great Britain on May 25, 1774 for Francis Blake of Ford and Twizell, Northumberland
Sir Francis Blake (d.1717) of Cogges, Oxfordshire married Elizabeth née Carr of Ford Castle, Northumberland, and purchased Twizell Castle, also in Northumberland, in 1685. He had no son but seven daughters, the eldest being Sarah, who married a distant cousin, Robert Blake of Menlough (1697–1734) great nephew of Sir Valentine. Their eldest son Francis was born in 1709.
The Baronetcy became extinct on the death of Sir Francis Blake, 3rd Baronet in 1860. His estates at Twizell and Tillmouth passed to a relative, also Francis Blake, for whose son, Francis Douglas Blake, the Baronetcy of Blake of Tillmouth Park was created in the Baronetcy of the United Kingdom on July 22, 1907.
