Black Island (Ross Archipelago)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Black Island (78°7′S, 166°8′E) is an island in the Ross Archipelago immediately west of White Island. Discovered by the Discovery Expedition (1901–04) and so named for its lack of snow. On the northern tip of the island is the principal telecommunications downlink facility for the US Antarctic Programs McMurdo Station. Peter A. Marchetti has spent the last twelve austral summers as the Antarctic Program Black Island Satellite Earth Station Camp Manager.
