Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve is an area located in Contra Costa County, California under the administration of the East Bay Regional Parks District. The Preserve includes the remains of several coal mines and the sites of five long gone coal mining towns. The towns were Nortonville, Somersville, Stewartville, West Hartley and Judsonville. The coal mined in these areas was of a low grade, but for a time in the 19th century, was the only readily accessible and economic source in California.
