Black first made an appearance in the album world in G-Series' mixed album, "Chharpotro", where their song "Chena Dukkho" was met with immense praise and became a fan favorite. They later continued to contribute to G-Series mixed albums, while working on their own album Amar Prithibi, released in 2002. Amar Prithibi was a huge success; it became one of the best selling albums in the entire country that year, immediately solidifying Black's position as one of the best-selling bands in the country. It was also the first true alternative rock record ever released in Bangladesh, which until the late 90s was heavily dominated by soft rock/pop groups like Feelings, Miles and the occasional hard rock bands like Warfaze. Songs such as "Obhiman", "Amar Prithibi", "Amra" and "Prarthonad" all went on to become huge hits from that album.
In the meantime, Black continued to produce songs for mixed albums like Anushilon, Projonmo, Din Bodol (which featured their collaboration with popular bands Artcell and Cryptic Fate on the song "Ashirbaad") and Lokayot. They were also featured in the mixed album series of Sumon (Aurthohin), with tracks in Agantuk, Agantuk-2 and Agantuk-3.
In November 2003 Black released their second album, Utshober Por. The album, due to its different sound, garnered a lot of controversy among the general public. A much more mature effort, in terms of experimentation, than Amar Prithibi, Utshober Por featured a more raw and back-to-basics alternative sound that older Black fans were used to. Although commercially the record was considered a letdown, it attained a lot of positive feedback from the press and critics alike.
Following 2003 Black’s popularity went through the roof, when the group was cast in a tele-film play, Offbeat which was televised in Valentine’s Day on Channel I.
The band has remained on hiatus with recording another album after the tragic accident that claimed the life of sound engineer Imran Ahmed Chowdhury Mobin and severely injured their bass player, Miraj, and their drummer, Tony. After a long and nearly everlasting absence they had started jamming again according to a local newspaper almost a year after the fatal accident. While bass player Miraj is yet to recover the legendary Bassbaba (Sumon) of Aurthohin filled in for him for about a year. Currently, while Miraj is still recovering, the position of bass player is helmed by Khan Sharrier Shagor, Miraj's mentor and former member of the 90s underground band, X-Uranium.
Black's keyboard player, Tahsan, launched his own solo career in 2004 with the release of his debut album Kothopokothon. The album introduced a new age pop sound, something completely different from Black's guitar-heavy records. With a new large amount of female fans, Tahsan became unpopular among a significant number of original Black fans. These fans felt that Tahsan was using Black to solidify his solo career. The album was a big hit, becoming the biggest selling album in Bangladesh that year, particularly the song Irsha which soon became a fan favorite. In 2005, Tahsan released his second solo album Kritodasher Nirban, followed by his third, Ichche in 2006. He then released his fourth studio album "Nei" in 2007.This album has since become his most successful album after his debut album. All of his albums topped the radio charts with hits like "Prematal", "Alo" and "Nei".
However, early in 2006 it was made official that after a mutual understanding, Tahsan had left the band, resulting in many Tahsan purists’ abhorrence towards the band. On the other hand, the fans of Black who disliked Tahsan were happy with the move. Though hardcore fans of Tahsan's were in a state of denial, the speculations of any sort of animosity between him and the remaining members of Black are entirely untrue, as stated by Black and Tahsan himself. But nevertheless now both of them have their own genres to ply on.
Black has announced that they are heading into studio to start recording their 3rd album from November 2007 onwards. They are done with the construction of their own studio, and and hope that their third album will hit the shelves sometime by the end of this year. The band has announced the title for the upcoming record to be "Abar".
Black's members are also famous for their affairs with models, female-actresses, and socialite. It was rumored that Tahsan left the band due to a fight with Jon regarding a famous Bangladeshi model. Currently, Tahsan and Jon are not in talking terms and do not like to share the same stage.
[edit] Return of Black
After a long time, Black released a song titled "35" in the mixed album "Underground". This album was released on 21 October 2006. The song was one of the biggest underground hits of the year. "35" was the first song they released after the horrendous car accident which nearly left their bassist Miraj crippled. After a long hiatus Miraj is expected to finally step into the band again. Details are quite sketchy but Miraj is expected to start appearing on Black's practice sessions again.
