I'm a 26-year old student from Norway (and about 1/8th British, and proud of it!), currently living in Kristiansand. I am (or at least trying to be) a student, currently taking a bachelor's degree in Information Techonology & Information systems, in the last of three years. I'm usually found over a computer somewhere; either at home, or at the school, where I work part-time for the IT-dept., or at Østsia, a student pub where I'm currently in charge of the lightning equipment and the computer network/systems and website.
I've been using Wikipedia on and off for a few years as an anon user, but registered after lots of nagging from a classmate of mine, Inter. I think the concept is great, although with certain shortcomings, like so many other encyclopædias, but especially on issues regarding prevention of duplicate work and little or no coordination between some subprojects.
I grew up in Sandnes, on the west coast of Norway, and lived there until 2001, when I moved to start at a folk-high-school, where I spent a year doing what I like best, which is to play drums (played since 1992). After that year, I was conscripted into the army, where I spent about one third of the time in some tent someplace in Norway, often combined with temperatures of around -10C or lower, and lots of snow. I liked that so much I signed a little contract with the army, basically making myself available for international operations if needed as part of Nasjonalt Støtteelement - a unit working closely with Telemark Bataljon. The contract was pretty nice, I could live a normal civillian life until they needed me....which they incidentally never did (for anything but military excersizes). In 2003, I moved to Oslo to start life as a student at the University there, taking various courses trying to decide what I wanted to do next.
[edit] Hobbies
Including, but not limited to:
- Reading - just about everything I can come across (such as Wikipedia)
- Programming/software developement - mostly just some smaller projects to entertain myself
- Music - Both listening to, as well as playing, likes nearly every genre except for techno-, and related, country and trad jazz.
- Restoring historic artifacts related to aircraft - used to be an active member at this place before moving in 2001.
- Swimming - just to get some exercise.
- Lightning design - work at the local student-pub[1], as well as freelance work.
[edit] What I do on WP
When I first started, I spent way too much time here, on too many articles or other places. I've reduced my work here mainly to fixing smaller errors, like typos, missing stubtemplates or categories, and the odd expansion of some articles. I usually roam around at random, as well as hanging out in the bootcamp channel on IRC, helping out users.
Sometime earlier in the spring of 2006, I started to work on a webbased IRC-client for that channel, based on PJIRC in order to simplify the process of getting users online in order to get help outside the wiki. As a result of this project, and my background I've found myself working more in trying to find alternative ways of improving Wikipedia, with some vague ideas for new tools floating around.
In may 2007 I became an admin, but although I haven't got too much time for Wikipedia, I try to help when I can :)
If you'd like to know more about my feelings towards Wikipedia, please read my thoughts on Wikipedia!
[edit] Toolserver
-
- The webbased IRC-client, can connect a user to various Wikipedia channels, and requires no installation or disk space.
- Templatesearcher, used to find templates in Wikipedia. Still under developement.
- Link Analyzer, used to find links on a page pointing to disambiguation pages.
[edit] Contact info
If you for any reason should get the urge to contact me, please do so! But read this first! Do not use email to contact me about how to write/find an article, and also not if you wrote an article that was deleted for some reason. Such email will not be replied to. If you need to contact me regarding some of the abovementioned, please use my talkpage. Please note that I will not reply to any e-mails not containing Wikipedia in the subject, and absolutely nothing not related to Wikipedia!
Contact me either via e-mail: wikipedia at bjelleklang.org or on IRC: username bjelleklang on the freenode network (I'm always found on either #Wikipedia, #wikipedia-en, or #wikipedia-en-help). Any requests on other email adresses than the one mentioned above will _not_ be replied to!
Or you can just drop a note at my talk page by clicking here.
