Public domain This image (or other media file) is in the public domain because its copyright has expired.

This applies to the United States, Canada, the European Union and those countries with a copyright term of life of the author plus 70 years.

Note that a few countries have copyright terms longer than 70 years: Mexico has 100 years, Colombia has 80 years, and Guatemala and Samoa have 75 years. This image may not be in the public domain in these countries, which moreover do not implement the rule of the shorter term. Côte d'Ivoire has a general copyright term of 99 years and Honduras has 75 years, but they do implement that rule of the shorter term.

Note that a photograph was presumably an intermediary in the 1950 publication of the drawing. Such a photograph could qualify under Icelandic law for a 50 year neighboring rights protection which has now expired. Note that prior to 2006 the period was 25 years. The 1950 book was published without a copyright notice. Since the work was in the public domain in Iceland in 1996 the implementation of the URAA would not have restored copyright in it in the United States. (And in the U.S., the photo as well as the reproduction would be ineligible to copyright anyway as per the Bridgeman v. Corel ruling, and since an engraving made from Sigurður's original was published as early as 1883 in Andvari, that original is also in the public domain in the U.S. due to having been published before 1923 (1909).)
This non-U.S. work was published 1923 or later, but is in the public domain in the United States because either
  • it was simultaneously published (within 30 days) in the U.S. and in its source country (Iceland) and is in the public domain in the U.S. as a U.S. work (no copyright registered, or not renewed),

or

  • it was first published outside the United States (and not published in the U.S. within 30 days) and
  • it was first published before 1978 without complying with U.S. copyright formalities or after 1978 without copyright notice and
  • it was in the public domain in its home country (Iceland) on the URAA date (January 1, 1996).

This work may still be copyrighted in other countries.

For background information, see the explanations on Non-U.S. copyrights. See above for the reasoning.
