Bishopric of Lebus

The Bishopric of Lebus (German: Bistum Lebus; Polish: Diecezja lubuska) was a Roman Catholic diocese and a state of the Holy Roman Empire. It existed from 1133 until 1598. The diocese encompassed areas on both sides of the River Oder, while the state was a small territory on the left side of the river around the town of Lebus called later Lubus Land.
The diocese was created in 1133 and was subordinate to the Archbishop of Gniezno. In 1385 the residence was moved from Lebus to Fürstenwalde (Spree). The bishopric fell to the Margraviate of Brandenburg in 1555, after it had been reformed, and was dissolved in 1598.
