Birla High School in Kolkata, West Bengal, formerly Hindi High School, was founded by Lakshmi Niwas Birla in 1941.
Birla's attempted to realize his own ideal of education in Hindi High School: Indian cultural tradition and western technique blended in a wholesome and harmonious discipline.
The name of the school was changed from Hindi High School to Birla High School in 1997. The school is organized in three sections in separate buildings, the Junior Section, the Senior Section, and the Girls' Section. The motto of the school is Tamaso Ma Jyotirgamay, which is translated as Lead Us From Darkness To Light on the school badge, but this is often shortened to 'From Darkness Unto Light'.
