[edit] Fictional character biography
Prior to his criminal career, Birdie was a professional wrestler, teaming with occasional rival Titanic Tim (from the Saturday Night Slam Masters series) as the "500 Million Trillion Powers." He turned to a life of crime when his wrestling career ended, doing some street fighting on the side to add to his income.
His notoriety got him invited to the first World Warrior tournament. He was suffering from a particularly nasty strain of flu, however, and lost his fight with Ryu. The flu was also used to explain why Birdie was Caucasian in the original Street Fighter.
Despite this setback, Birdie rose up the criminal ranks. He eventually became aware of an organization called Shadaloo and managed to use his criminal reputation to join them.
Sneaking into a Shadaloo data room, he learned about the Psycho Drive machine, not aware that M. Bison was watching him. Thinking he could use it to overthrow Bison and become lord of Shadaloo himself, he set out to find it. Bison sent Balrog to kill Birdie, but Birdie convinced Balrog to help him instead by telling him how the Psycho Drive could make them powerful. Hindered by Balrog's incompetence, however, Birdie couldn't find the Drive before it blew up.
It is likely that Birdie remained with Shadaloo until it finally collapsed, and is either back on the street or in jail by now.
[edit] Appearance
Birdie is a hulking figure with dyed blonde hair, a leather jacket, several rings, and oddly pointed shoes. His unusual looking shoes are more common to punks in Japan, rather than the combat boots worn by punks in Birdie's native England. He also has a tattoo of a red heart on the side of his head. He also sports a patently impossible hole in the center of his mohawk, giving his unique hairstyle the appearance of a bird's beak.
Birdie's appearance in the Alpha series is noticeably changed from his appearance in the original Street Fighter. In the original game, Birdie was a tall - though not particularly heavyset - Caucasian. In the Alpha series, Birdie became not only much more muscled and heavy, but even appears to be black. He makes reference to this change in one of his victory quotes, wherein he says, "Oh, I was pale before because I was sick!"

Birdie's personality in the comic and anime differs greatly from his personality in the games. In the anime, he is an unfortunate victim for a secret Shadaloo contest, where every fighter was secretly being under surveillance for collecting data for their greatest experiment. Birdie eventually helps Ryu and Chun-Li to escape from this experiment.
Also, in the Manga, Birdie made Ryu his bodyguard for his Drug-Dealing business, hearing about Ryu's thoughts to quit his fighting, he cheered him up. Eventually, they where exposed by the Interpool agent "Chun-Li" and was to be put into jail. Birdie resists, and Chun-Li goes down to his boat to fight him, Ryu saves Birdie from a bullet from a sniper and is shot in the chest, apparently killing him. But this is not the case, as the bullet goes out of his body because of his "Satsui-No-Hado" rage, becoming "Evil-Ryu" he goes to the yacht to kill his "killer", killing anyone in his way. Chun-Li decides to try and stop Ryu, but Birdie decides to stop him as well. They fail to stop him until Birdie manages to grab him and begs Chun-Li to fire her "Kikoken" at them, while doing this, he begs Ryu to wake up, telling him not to act as he himself used to, busting up the weak. Eventually, Ryu breaks out and goes on to try and kill Chun-Li, but is released from his rage. Ryu is freed, and helps Chun-Li to stop Shadaloo.
