Pretty happy with this, I've put a bit of work into the history of the town & illustrated it with a few pictures. Without looking stuff up in a book I'm quite hazy on a lot of the dates so dates for various events would be good. The other number I want but can't find is the census population for Bingley Urban & Bingley Rural wards.

One thing I'd like to clear up is the alcohol related disorder that some unknown IP address highlighted. I don't live there any more, just visit my parents so I don't feel in a position to say definitely how much of a problem there is. I did ask my mum's opinion & she feels that the overt police presence has brought it pretty much under control. It could of course be argued that the need for an overt police presence is a sign of an issue. On the other hand is this all mainly because Bingley has been sucsessful in attracting revelers?

[edit] Location Map

I added the location map simply by copying the Wiki code for the map in Bradford, hence it's the same map. I can't find how to create a new map. It's not going to be much different, but I feel Bingley should have its own map. MickWest 23:33, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The dot maps have been produced by Lupin & uploaded by his bot LupinBot. I think there are instructions buried in his user pages but its very late so I'll sort it or ask him in the next few days. MGS

BTW welcome to Wikipedia, I'm only slightly less new myself so it's reassuring that the first significant edits since the quite major revisions I've done to Bingley are mostly tiding up & I've not made any glaring errors :-) 01:18, 3/6/5 UTC

[edit] Population Stat

I've changed it to 32,574 (i.e. the population of Bingley and Bingley Rural wards) as per http://www.bcsp-web.org/mapguide_site/maingeo.cfm. --ElvisThePrince 09:28, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Spilt?

I've created a series of maps of the Bradford wards, but I don't see a real place for the Bingley one, I'm about to create a separate page for Bingley Rural but I also propose splitting Bingley (Ward) from this page. Comments please? Barring substantial objections I'll probably implement this on the evening of the 22nd. MGSpiller 21:08, 19 August 2005 (UTC)

I was wondering about this too, I'm just not sure how much of a seperate identity Bingley Rural has compared with Bingley (also I don't know enough about the two to split the existing article), if you do then http://www.bradfordinfo.com/census/WardProfiles.cfm is a good source of background info for them both. The same sort of problems apply to the three Keighley wards (Central, East and West). --ElvisThePrince 21:22, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
I'd like to see the images lined back up with their respective sections (like the domesday book image), and if that means taking the ward info to a seperate page, then I'm all for it MickWest 22:17, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
Done, I have created a separate page & moved the info-box. I left the Wards of Bradford box at the bottom though it no-longer links directly back to this page.MGSpiller 19:48, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Good Article

I've nominated this as a good article... you never know it might pass :-) MGSpiller 21:29, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

I haven't promoted this, because the following things need to be rectified:
  • Title headings should follow normal sentence capitalisation - see WP:MOS;
  • 'Trivia' section should be eliminated by including the quoted facts in the main flow of the text.
  • Similarly, 'famous people' should be merged, probably into the history section. It's not terribly encyclopaedic to include such a list.
  • The intro section should be a short summary of all of the article's content. It seems very odd to emphasise council wards so much. Worldtraveller 00:21, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Druid's Altar

Does anyone else think it would be a nice idea including a section about Druid's Altar? I've lived in Bingley since 1995 now and only just heard about it this Easter, and after seeing the view from it and discovering the historical significance of the place I'm surprised there is no mention of it in the article. I'm planning on taking a series of high quality super wide angle photographs from it with a film SLR, I could contribute those as we really could do with a higher quality view of Bingley than the grainy Panoramic one that's on there now. [edit] Throstle's Nest

Why do people commonly refer to Bingley as the 'Throstle's Nest of Old England'? I gather that throstle is a species of bird, but I'm at a loss as to a) why a birds nest and b) why a throstle as opposed to any other bird. Bainzy (talk) 00:23, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
