Binhai New Area

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Binhai New Area (Chinese: 滨海新区) is a major development in Tianjin municipality. It will enlarge Tianjin port, and build many new industrial parks in the Tanggu area east of Tianjin city. It is said that it will become an area for foreign companies to set up operations rivaled by only Shenzhen and Pudong, Shanghai. It is an SEZ (Special Economic Zone) in the PRC, where experimental reforms are done throughout the zone. Unlike Pudong, however, the Binhai New Area is not on the official administrative strata of PRC governance, and is in fact consisting of several districts in Tianjin. Namely, Tanggu District, Hangu District, and Dagang District.

Some analysts also suspect Binhai to be a political counterbalance to Shanghai's rapid development and relative economic independence.
