Good edit. Btw, do you have references for them? I need to do so for the edit I did, actually ;) Longshot14 06:38, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Lou Bullington Tower
Some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Lou Bullington Tower may not be sufficiently well-known to merit articles of their own. The Wikipedia community welcomes newcomers, and encourages them to become Wikipedians. On Wikipedia, each user is entitled to a user page in which they can describe themselves, and this article's content may be incorporated into that page. However, to merit inclusion in the encyclopedia proper, a subject must be notable. We encourage you to write or improve articles on notable subjects. Vegaswikian 03:22, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Bruce Alger
The Bruce Alger article that you wrote seems to be a copyright violation of http://dallaslibrary.org/CTX/archives/MA83-11.html
Normally, I would slap the appropriate copyvio template on the page, and it would be deleted soon after, however, in this case the content seems to have come from a source which is intended for public research, so I would at least like to offer you the chance to re-write the article from scratch, replacing any text from that site with text of your own. Feel free to include details from the Dallas library, but direct mass duplication is not allowed by copyright law. Thank you, and happy editing! -Harmil 23:06, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
- Wikipedia articles are licensed under the GFDL and in any case are not attributed to singular authors (even in such cases as those authors have been the principal [or even sole] editors). Please do not continue to append your name to the Alger article as the author. If you do not desire that your text should appear without attribution, you may, I suppose, remove it; your text, though, has already been released under the GFDL, and, so, to the extent that the article doesn't have copyright violations, any removal of relevant text will likely result in the article's being reverted. Please feel free to query me about this issue on my talk page. Thanks! Joe 04:43, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] facts and sources
You are adding a lot of great facts to Wikipedia, and for that I thank you! However, your edits are not sourced, for the most part. If you're grabbing lots of facts from good reference sources, please cite your sources inline. Thanks! -Harmil 01:13, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Republican Party (United States)
Hi, I have just been doing some tidying up, disambiguating links to Republican. I see you have been doing great work on lots of articles, but I thought I'd drop you a message because a lot of the edits I have been correcting are yours.
As you'll see, the link in my first sentence here (which I wrote as Republican) points to a disambiguation page -- in this case, a page which describes all the different meanings of the word "Republican".
In several of your edits, you have used Republican when the link was clearly intended to refer to the Republican Party (United States).
The way to that correctly is to used this text, which I have italicised here for clarity: Republican. That way, the link will appear as Republican ... but it will bring you to the page you want.
Please could you try to use this form of link when you mean to refer to the Republican Party? Thanks! --BrownHairedGirl 12:23, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply on my talk. I have moved the "Charlton lyons" article to "Charlton Lyons", and also fixed the Joe Waggonner article.
- However, I hope you won't take this the wrong way when I say that although you are doing great work creating lots of new articles, it'd be even better if you took a little more time to learn how Wikipedia works. Apart from the link problems I pointed out, most of your articles are uncategorised, and that makes your hard work much less valuable, as well as leaving it to other editirs to do a lot of tidying up.
- If you start by going to WP:HELP, you'll find a lot of guidance there under Editing Wikipedia. Good luck! --BrownHairedGirl 18:19, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Election data
As someone who's also working on articles related to New Orleans and Louisiana politics, I really appreciate the work you're putting into articles on Louisiana politicians. I'm thinking, though, that now that I've started a series of articles on Louisiana and New Orleans elections, a lot of the material on specific campaigns and election results that you've added to articles on politicians might be better suited to the new articles on specific elections. See the Louisiana gubernatorial election, 1963-64 article for an example of how I've used your data to add detail to an election article. I'll wait until I hear what you think before I start removing it from biographical articles on politicians, though.--Praxedis G 18:01, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Linking, formatting
Hi, Billy. I just ran through your excellent article on Charles T. Beaird to bring it more into line with Wikipedia policies and procedures. In particular, be careful not to violate the neutral point of view policy. Writing that sounds overly praising of the subject is not in keeping with Wikipedia's established style. Also, it is accepted practice to only link to the first occurrence of a term and then not to link thereafter (in your piece, you linked almost every instance of Shreveport and Republican). Lastly, we have many categories for people in particular rather than the broad categories you applied. For example, rather than Category:Philanthropy, Beaird falls under Category:American philanthropists. These categories go at the end of the article, and you can make sure the article will sort correctly (by last name) by using a piped link. For example, putting Charles T. Beaird into a category with text like will cause the article to be sorted under its first letter, C. To force it to sort by last name, you do this: The category name will show up on the Charles T. Beaird page, and the article will now be filed under the letter B on the appropriate category page. In the end, though, don't sweat the small stuff. You'll pick all this up in time. I hope you stick around and continue editing! — BrianSmithson 17:00, 16 May 2006 (UTC)
- Please stop removing links on the Charles T. Beaird page. Also, please read Wikipedia:Dates. It is not necessary to wikilink every simple date. In fact, this is against policy. — BrianSmithson 18:14, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, Billy. I have replied to your comments on my talk page. Please let me know if you have any more questions. — BrianSmithson 16:17, 20 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Categories
Hello. You are really doing a great job on your articles. Please keep the Categories toward the bottom of the page when creating or editing (not the top). See the Wikipedia:Categorization page example "Adding an article to a category is as simple as editing the article and adding a link to the category. For instance, to add Felis silvestris catus article to the "fluffy creatures" category, you would edit the article and enter at the bottom, but before interlanguage links." Thank you. [edit] accolades, references
Billy, great job with the new William J. Guste article! It's always impressive to see a new article go up in such good shape. Wikipedia:Footnotes could be helpful for the reference section, if you're so inclined. --Kchase02 T 00:10, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Request for edit summary
When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:
The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.
Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. – Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 21:28, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Billy Chandler
Well, just keep trying if you want. But you're not required to create any links, the message is just a general request for anyone to do it at some point. Usually you can just look at some related articles, and create a little new text them if need be. --W.marsh 02:58, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Edit summary bar
Oleg, the edit summary line. What do we put in the edit summary bar? Just a phrase about the changes made?
Thanks, Billy Hathorn —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Billy Hathorn (talk • contribs).
- Yes, just a short summary of what you changed can go along way. :) Thanks. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 14:52, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, for example if you added categories, "categorized" would be a good summary as would "+Category:whichever ones added". If somebody has died and you add info about that, "Add materal on death", etc... It lets others see what was done, which can speed up editorial review. GRBerry 19:44, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Wayne DuBose
For all talk pages, please remember to sign talk page comments with "~~~~" as the four tildes automatically adds your username and a timestamp to the comment. (Three would be username only, five is timestamp only.)
In Articles for deletion (AFD) discussion, you'll get the most mileage out of opinions out of comments that refer to the policies of Wikipedia, like WP:NOR, WP:V, WP:NPOV, the general essay on notability WP:NN, or topic specific notability guidelines like WP:BIO, WP:CORP, WP:WEB. Have your opinions explain why the article either violates or meets the standards. For notability, it is enough to meet any one standard. GRBerry 19:44, 6 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] John N. Kennedy
Thank you for you recent edits to John N. Kennedy. I was wondering if you know of, or found any connection between John N. Kennedy and the Kennedy family. I searched around the Internet for more than an hour and could not find anything to prove or refute any familial connection. Given the similarity between his name and that of John F. Kennedy, I am curious about this. If you have any insight on this question, please feel free to contact me on my Talk page. --TommyBoy 02:37, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Tommy Boy, there is no connection between the LA treasurer and the MA Kennedys. The treasurer was born a year before JFK was elected to the Senate.

[edit] Couhig
Hi. Some of your edits to Rob Couhig sound more like advertising or campaign promotion than encyclopedic description. See Wikipedia:NPOV. Whether the subject is someone we admire or dislike, try to stick to just the facts. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 20:17, 8 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Articles you are editing
Thank you for your contributions. Please note that you are editing many articles related to living people. I would invite you to read the policy of WP:BLP, so that you can edit these articles in accordance with established policies. I would also ask you to provide inline references, rather than a bunch or URLs, so that readers and other editors can verify the information provided. Failure to do so may result in most of the text being deleted from these articles as it fails the policy of Verifiability. Happy editing. ≈ jossi ≈ t • @ 02:44, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] WP:AUTO
I can see that you have written a thesis on the subjects you are editing. I would suggest that you read WP:AUTO as well. ≈ jossi ≈ t • @ 02:47, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
-
- You should wait for others to write an article about subjects in which you are personally involved. This applies to articles about you, your achievements, your business, your publications, your website, your relatives, and any other possible conflict of interest.
We welcome people who are knowledgable about a subject writing about that subject; but verifiability and lack of biased editing is important. Sometimes experts about a subject feel their opinion should count rather than supply a source; we can't verify an editor's identity let alone expertise and so we insist on verifiable sources. Sometimes experts have a bias or a conflict of interest that that gets in the way of a NPOV article; behavior on the part of the expert and common sense on the part of observers can lead to the expert being asked to contribute to the talk page instead of the article itself. Sometimes wikipedia inadvertently drives away experts for no good reason at all; I hope things work out ok. WAS 4.250 03:25, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Your articles
It seems like you are writing a lot of articles about Louisiana Republicans. Do you work for the state party? Rockules318 21:34, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
No, but I grew up in Louisiana. I live in Texas.

I have written more articles about Democrats than Republicans, I believe the count would show.
[edit] Response to prod
Hi -- just wanted to let you know I've moved your comments in response to the "prod" on Dan Richey to the article's Talk page since the talk page is the appropriate place to discuss an article. --Bookgrrl 02:14, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, but I could not find where on the Talk Page to place comments. The original challenge to the article is in the "edit" section of the article itself. Also, I have been given directions on how to place photos in an article, and I cannot understand the directions. Do you have a simplifed set of directions, listed 1, 2, 3, etc.

[edit] Signing comments, pictures
Hi, Billy. I saw a comment from you somewhere that you didn't know how to sign your comments on talk pages. All you do is type ~~~~ (four tilde symbols in a row). When you save the page, the tildes will be converted into your signature and the date and time. The tilde ~ is the key at the upper-left-hand side of your keyboard.
As for adding images to articles, are you having trouble uploading them or simply adding them to the article page? Let me know which, and I'll try to explain it in simple terms. Thanks, — BrianSmithson 22:22, 21 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, Brian, but the instructions make no sense to me on either finding the pictures, tagging them, or uploading them.
- If you have a specific image you want to use, you can email it to me and I'll place it for you. Just click on my name, then click "E-mail this user" on the left of the browser window. The image hs to be freely usable, though (one you took yourself, or that you have permission to use, or that predates 1924). — BrianSmithson 08:23, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
- I've gone through about half the links you sent me, and I'll try to get the rest done soon. I'm uploading them as fair use, since they all seem to be under copyright. This shouldn't be a problem, but don't be surprised if the images get deleted. — BrianSmithson 04:23, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Dan Richey
Just so you know, I did some cleanup work on the Richey article and the links in it.
Although, you might want to find some other location to store the information that you could have had in those Yahoo mail links. Linking to Yahoo mail isn't going to work, because we all can't access your inbox.
But you are making Wikipedia a pretty good resource for information about Louisiana politics and that's pretty good too.

[edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Dan Richey
I've removed the comments you replicated from the Dan Richey Talk page to the AfD discussion... please don't spam the AfD with discussion from the article Talk Page; it makes the discussion hard to read. Simply add an opinion of keep or delete and explain why you feel that is the correct course of action. Thanks!--Isotope23 19:32, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] AfD logs
Please do not remove AfD entries from AfD logs (except when relisting to get a more thorough consensus). They need to be in the logs for historical reasons. --Nlu (talk) 06:29, 18 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Images
I've finished going through your photo requests. There were an image or two that weren't usable (too small or poor quality), but most of them have been added to the appropriate articles. Sorry it took so long; I have less time to devote to Wikipedia than I'd like. — BrianSmithson 05:59, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Your work on Seymour Weiss
Billy, I wish to commend you on your work on the "Seymour Weiss" page. I'm a newbie, and was feeling a bit down over how to clean up, or amend the article to fit within the most proper guildline here. Also, I was at a small loss as how to communicate with someone, who could assist me, or 'carry the ball' for awhile. Your additions, and revisions, are clean, and professional, and very much appreciated. Thanks - Sincerely, Brad Michael Moore bmm at bradmichaelmoore.com67.142.130.35 22:16, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for the kind comment, Brad. I find that one of the most difficult things about Wikipedia is how to contact other writers. I happened to have the Dict. of La. Biog. on Weiss and was going to add some of that material to the roster. Then I found that someone had already written on Weiss. So I blended what I had with what you had already presented and made it consistent in style. I don't think I left out any of your points in the editing process.
I really did not know much about Weiss until I did this editing earlier in the week. I had no idea, for instance, that he golfed with Bob Hope, but so many golfed with ol' Bob, didn't they?
Billy Hathorn (I can never remember that user code either.)
[edit] Nicholls
Thanks for your edits to Francis T. Nicholls! Keep up the good work! This article has been added to the maintenance list of the American Civil War Task Force. Feel free to consult the style guideline at User:Hlj/CWediting that we have adopted. Again, thanks for adding to this article, and we look forward to futher improvements to other Louisiana-rleated Civil War bios. Keep 'em coming... Scott Mingus 13:13, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, Scott for the kind remarks. I also will add that Cleveland appointed Nicholls to the Board of Visitors of West Point, but I don't know just what that board was (or is). It would also be good to find what Nicholls raised on his plantation, presumably sugar. It would also be good if we could find the exact 1876 election returns between Nicholls and Packard.

[edit] Frank Madla article
Thanks for your great contributions to the Frank L. Madla article. With finals coming up, I hadn't had a chance to add some more extensive info on the page. One quick question, though, about the changes to the references that I had. I had been trying to follow other examples on reference usage and had the embedded tags to indicate what info came from what source, and the <div class="references-small"><references/></div>, in the References section to consolidate them and "pretty" them up. I noticed that your edits moved my embedded references from the info that was being cited, and copied them into the References section. Not having worked on that many bios while making references myself, I want to abide by what's accepted practice for references, so if you have ny thoughts on or reasons for the changes, please let me know. — Bellhalla 13:46, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
To Bellhalla, I d not know how to do the imbedded commands. When I saw that my article was much more extensive than your, I just went with my artice but kept your commands in the Reference section. I think that all your information was already in my article too. I wrote the article without seeing that someone else had already done an article on Mr. Madla. That was a horrible tragedy! Fell free to move your commands back to the exact text. Do you know how to get a photo of Madla in the story?

[edit] William E. Bennett
I've added the "prod" template to the article William E. Bennett, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at Talk:William E. Bennett. You may remove the deletion notice, and the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. - crz crztalk 16:08, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
Mr. Bennett was an elected school board member. I am trying to find his exact years of service. It is my understanding that holding an elected office qualifies for "notability" on Wikipedia.
Thanks,

[edit] Billy J. Guin article
A tag has been placed on Billy J. Guin, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add hangon
on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Thanks, Rillian 18:47, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Albert Bel Fay article
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions to the Albert Bel Fay article, but for legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.
Feel free to re-submit a new version of the article. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.
If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later."
You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here. You can also leave a message on my talk page. Bellhalla 14:14, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Important information for you, Billy
Billy, I'd like to thank you for your valuable contributions to Wikipedia. I would also like to ask you to please take some time and familiarize yourself with several wikipedia policies and guidelines before you create any new articles. I've included a list of some Official Policies that you should adhere to, as well as examples of where those policies could be applied to your contributions:
- Wikipedia:Copyrights
- Example: Albert Bel Fay article had paragraphs that were almost completely copied from the Handbook of Texas entry on Mr. Fay. Using the words of others is considered a copyright violation.
- Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons
- Example: The lead paragraph of the Suzanna Hupp article notes several facts that should be referenced, including her date of birth, the tradiational Democratic nature of her district, who worldwide has recognized her, etc.. We have communicated before over references in articles (in regard to Frank L. Madla). As a reminder, footnotes can make clear what your source is for facts you’re asserting. More information about footnotes can be found here: Help:Footnotes and Wikipedia:Footnotes
- Wikipedia:Sock puppetry
- Example: On the Dan Richey Talk Page there are several comments that could be considered sockpuppetry. All, for example, used the same signature style that you were using at the time (````(name)````), and whose contributions seem to be limited to that discussion only.
- Wikipedia:No original research
- Example: on the Henry Grover article, one reference you have listed is an interview with Mr. Grover’s widow. Such an interview could likely be considered a primary source and not suitable for use in Wikipedia.
- Wikipedia:Verifiability
- Example: Referring again to the Henry Grover reference (the interview with Mr. Grover’s widow): As a source material, this would not be verifiable unless you have published it elsewhere, which would allow other editors or readers to verify it. (If it has been published elsewhere, you should reference that location instead.)
- Wikipedia:Reliable sources
- Example: in the Suzanna Hupp article several references you have listed are from http://www.ussearch.com. This link in the Hupp article seems to be the basis on which you assert that Edward Lindsey was born in 1938. (If you had used a footnote, it would of course eliminate any doubt as to what this is supporting and/or your source for Mr. Lindsey’s date of birth.) Setting aside the issue of the lack of relevance of Mr. Lindsey's age to this article, at best it gives an estimated year of birth for Edward Lindsey.
I would also suggest that you try to keep the information in articles relevant to what one would expect in an encyclopedia. For example, in the Henry Grover article, of the approximately 2,600 words you added, almost 1,100 — over 40% — were the eulogy by his son. If anything is included in the eulogy that is not covered in the article, include that portion, reference it, and then put the link to the full item in an External links section.
In some articles you have often included information that is relevant in an encyclopedic sense, but not in the context of the current article. For example, in the Suzanna Hupp article, the extended discussion of Mr. Aycock’s electoral win and percentages is more appropriate for a Jimmie Don Aycock article rather than the Hupp article.
Another thing I have seen in several articles that you have contributed to are dates of births and deaths for other people mentioned in the article. The dates of birth and death for the subject of the article are of course relevant, but are usually not for others mentioned in normal contexts. The Suzanna Hupp has some good examples of where dates are relevant and where they probably aren't. In my view the fact that Edward Lindsey was born in 1938 is not relevant to the Hupp article (unless his age was a factor in the campaign, for example). But the date and manner of death for her parents are important in the formation of Hupp’s political beliefs, and are therefore relevant.
Billy, I sincerely believe you are acting in good faith in adding your contributions, but when you add contributions that are contrary to Wikipedia policies and guidelines, not only do you create more work for other Wikipedians, but you diminish the value of your own work and time.
Please click here if you wish to discuss any of this with me on my talk page. — Bellhalla 16:58, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Please don't add copyrighted text to Wikipedia
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We appreciate your creation of the article, Albert Bel Fay, but we cannot accept copyrighted text borrowed from other web sites or printed material. Please see Wikipedia:Copyright problems for more information on this topic, or generally, Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines. Please do not remove the copyright violation notice placed in the article or repost the suspected infringing text. However, if you would like to rewrite the article in your own words, follow the link in the posted notice to create a temporary subpage. If your new article is appropriate, and not a further copyright violation, the reviewing administrator will move that new article into place once the copyright status of the original has been resolved. Happy editing! — Bellhalla 14:17, 23 December 2006 (UTC).
[edit] Regarding Albert Bel Fay article
Billy, in regard to your edits on Albert Bel Fay, there was — in the copyright violation notice — an item that said in large, bold type Do not edit this page until an administrator has resolved this issue. There was also another item, also in bold type, that said To write a new article without infringing material, follow this link to a temporary subpage.
Here, then, is what you do:
- At Albert Bel Fay, do nothing unless you are an administrator. If you are not sure if you are an administrator, then you are not an administrator.
- If you want to try to revise the article, do so at Talk:Albert_Bel_Fay/Temp.
Thanks — Bellhalla 13:42, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Regarding signing comments
Billy, some helpful information you might like to know: When you are posting a comment on a Talk Page, all you need to type is this: ~~~~ (The tilde symbol, ~, is usually in the upper left corner of your keyboard. You might have to hold the SHIFT key down when pressing the key in order to make sure it is a tilde and not a back tick symbol, which looks like this: `.
As an example, in the previous Talk Page item I left above, at the end I typed this: Thanks — ~~~~. The wiki software in use here automatically turned it into this: Thanks — Bellhalla 13:42, 23 December 2006 (UTC). Notice how it added the link to my talk page, the time, etc., automatically? Pretty cool, huh?
Thanks — Bellhalla 13:50, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Republicans in Acadiana
I'm not sure if there's a better place for this, but this could work.
Anyways, from the results that I see on the CQ Voting and Elections database for 1920, it appears that Harding won 14 Parishes in South Louisiana. Splitting the results into regions says that Cox won North Louisiana by 71%, won Southeast Louisiana by 36%, and won Acadiana by 318 votes. (When it comes to regions, Acadiana is the region mapped on Wikipedia, SE-LA is everything Southeast of West Feliciana, North LA is everything else. Just in case you wanted more info there)
Anyways, would there be any articles on here worth checking out when it comes to Republicans in Acadiana? The results I get to see as a member on Dave Leip's site say that the Republicans best region in the 1912 and 1924 elections was Acadiana. And then the region voted for Al Smith (for regions that are probably not a huge shock).
But then again, maybe Woodrow Wilson angered that part of the US a lot around 1920. It's possible.
Either way, if there's any more useful information on this topic, feel free to pass it on.

[edit] Political affiliation in succession boxes
Billy, while political affiliation is important in an article about a politician, you are the only editor that I've encountered that puts a party affiliation in succession boxes. If you could point me to a discussion where a consensus was reached on putting affiliations in succession boxes, I would appreciate it. Otherwise, please follow the examples of most other Wikipedians and please stop putting the affiliation into the succession boxes. — Bellhalla 13:44, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] An article you created (Aldo Tatangelo) is up for deletion
Hi Billy
I noticed that you're a valued contributer to WP so I thought I should bring it to your attention that Aldo Tatangelo has recently been nominated for deletion. You can find the discussion here. All the best! The Rambling Man 17:34, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, Rambling Man for alerting me. I think I can defend the article. Notability in the particular city or county is sufficient, isn't it? Billy Hathorn 02:37, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Putting party in the succession boxes
I think it is a good idea to put party in the succession boxes. It shows if there is continuity when an office changes hands or if there is a party switch. It also looks much better from an aesthetic view to have the party labels listed. And it is almost no extra work at all.
Compare: clearly the former looks much better than the latter.

Billy Hathorn 02:35, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
- The consensus — by practice, if not by vote — seems to be that party labels are not included in the succession boxes. While I respect your opinion that the former box “looks much better”, I disagree with it and feel the latter is much cleaner and easier to read. Nevertheless, the consensus is not to put party labels in boxes, and I hope you will abide by that. Also, whether or not it is more or less work is irrelevant, because the consensus is not to put party labels in boxes.
- Also, in you second box, presumably this is the box that would appear at the bottom of the Ann Richards
boxarticle. If that is the case, adding her name in the box is redundant because the Ann Richards article is — by definition — about her. No need to repeat her name. — Bellhalla 16:43, 13 January 2007 (UTC)
-
- How would I going about proposing that the party labels be put in the succession boxes? How can the policy be changed?
- The name is redundant, but I think it looks much better to have the name in the middle as well. Billy Hathorn

-
- I'm not sure where you would go about making that proposal. One thing you can do is put on this page (not an article, or its talk page) helpme followed by your question and someone will be along shortly to answer the question.
- Also, if you put one or more colons (“:”) before each paragraph in your reply (in this case, I used three, “:::”), it will indent it your reply the appropriate amount. (This is a pretty common way of formatting replies on Wikipedia.) — Bellhalla 13:43, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry if I was not explicit enough on the helpme, but what you need to do is to create a new section on this, your talk page, and give it an appropriate title, like “I need help on X” (where X is what ever you need help with). Then, below the heading type these actual characters: two left braces, the letters ‘helpme’ and two right braces. (It should look like this when you type it: helpme.) Then state your problem or question, along the lines of “Where would I go to propose a change to Z” (where Z is whatever you want to ask about.
- What you apparently did was to edit the actual helpme template. — Bellhalla 13:50, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Formatting tip of the day
You don't need to use the html codes for italicizing text on Wikipedia. It works, but the article will be easier to make edits on if there's not any html code in them. Instead use a doubled single quote (i.e. two of these: ' )
- Example
- Typing this:
-
No, it was my car that broke down, not my cat.
-
- Will produce this:
- No, it was my car that broke down, not my cat.
You can go here: Wikipedia:Sandbox to try out any forrmatting tests or to play around with the example above. — Bellhalla 13:56, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] AfD Nomination: Bill Robertson
An editor has nominated the article Bill Robertson for deletion, under the Articles for deletion process. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the nomination (also see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Your opinions on why the topic of the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome: participate in the discussion by editing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bill Robertson. Mayor Robertson
This is certainly not autobiographical, or it would likely have included the full date of birth, rather than the year.
It is not really biographical either (almost nothing found on his earlier years) -- it is mostly about local elections in which Mr. Robertson has been a candidate and Mr. Robertson's leadership over his city.
Where is there a Wikipedia policy that a city must have a population of 20,000 for its five-times-elected mayor to be included? Many notable people have come from small cities.
He is the longest serving mayor (it appears) in the history of his city, certainly the longest serving since World War II.
He is notable in his section of the state. The article contributes to the political history of Louisiana.

[edit] D.C. Wimberly
Mr. Wimberly was an official of the American Ex-Prisoners of War interest group and was a POW in Germany from 1944-1945. He was principal of four public schools in Webster Parish, Louisiana, and meets the test of notability in his area. He is listed on the Springhill, Louisiana, town website as among the notable persons in his community, along with the football player John David Crow and the singer Joe Stampley.

[edit] Deleted POW article
Hi, Billy. I saw your comments at Wikipedia:Peer review/Keggy the Keg/archive1 -- I removed them because you added them to an unrelated project page where those sorts of inquiries don't belong. In the future, you should direct those kinds of questions to the admin who deleted the article (you can check the log to see who it was -- just click there, enter the name of the article that was deleted, and it will show who deleted it), or the Help Desk. Here is the last version of the page that you edited, in case you wish to copy & paste your comments from there to the Help Desk or elsewhere.
I'm not familiar with the article about the POW that you're talking about, but it sounds like it was deleted under the speedy deletion policy -- usually deletions require discussion, as you mentioned, but in certain specific cases, they can be deleted without warning. It also sounds like the page you're talking about was a notability delete -- the criteria for a speedy delete in that case is any article that makes no assertion of notability, i.e. one that does not say anything that could be construed as a claim of notability.
If you think the article was deleted unjustly, you can seek a deletion review to undelete it. I'd say your best place to start, though, is the deletion log above and asking the admin who deleted it why s/he did so and under what justification.
If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a line -- I'd be glad to help you through whatever channels you choose to pursue. Dylan 23:04, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
To:Dylan 23:04, 31 January 2007 (UTC)
The editor who deleted the article also deleted my challenge. It was a one-man decision. That is why I wonder why no one else was involved. The person deleted is listed under the "notables" section of his hometown municipal web page. He, like all of the POWs, I presume, had an interesting story to tell.
By doing "speedy deletion", the editor can make a decision unilaterally. If he allows input from others, he is less likely able to get the article he opposes deleted.
Thanks for any help or suggestions that you may give.

[edit] John M. Duhe

[edit] Philip Nolan
Thanks for your edits on Philip Nolan. A couple of pointers. Check when you create a link to see where it goes. In the Philip Nolan article you linked Spanish which goes to a disambiguation page, where none of the items really apply to Spanish colonial possessions. The more appropriate link might have been to Spanish Empire piped as Spanish. I have made the change. Second the Wikipedia convention is to refer to the subject of a biographical article by just using his or her last name, unless the article is talking about a variety of people with that same last name. So after the introductory sentence, Philip Nolan is correctly referred to as Nolan. Date conventions vary within Wikipedia. It is considered impolite by some to change the date format of another editor, except to make an article internally consistent. As you may have noted, the software default in Wikipedia is: day, month year. --Bejnar 00:05, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

I notice as byproducts of an AsD some of you articles about Louisiana politicians. They generally seem to have a remarkable amount of historical background about other figures. [edit] Harry T. Pringle
A tag has been placed on Harry T. Pringle, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. To do this, add hangon
on the top of the page (below the existing db tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position.
HarryHenryGebel 03:00, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thomas H. Welch
Re Thomas H. Welch -- I read the article, and Mr. Welch's notability as a musician did not appear to meet the standards of WP:BAND. Nor does dying young in itself make a musician notable. Sorry -- I appreciate your many contributions of biographies of notable Louisianans, but I don't think this one works. NawlinWiki 01:35, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
I would like the Thomas H. Welch article to be sent to a committee for review, not just have one person unilaterally decide that it is unsuitable. I had never heard of River Phoenix until he died. This artist may not be that notable, but this story is unique in part because of the name of the punk rock band.

[edit] Your biographical articles
I see that you have a an extensive history of creating biographical articles. The enthusiasm is genuinely appreciated. However, I'm wondering if perhaps the Wikipedia community can get you to pay more attention in your work to Wikipedia policies on such things as notability, copyright violations and what Wikipedia is not?
Your talk page seems to indicate that you have been cautioned about these things many times. A number of your articles have been deleted for the policy violations. Yet, your editing behavior in those areas doesn't seem to have changed. Just today you have created several articles on non-notable individuals, some of which appear to be copied straight from the obituary section of a newspaper. I'm sure the Wikipedia community would like you to bring you to the understanding that that is simply not acceptable.
One of your creations today Wayne L. DuBose is simply a re-creation of an article you created that the community already rejected, (when it was called Wayne DuBose). You obviously were aware of the community's decision on that article since you participated in its deletion discussion. Yet you've intentionally defied that community consensus by just re-creating the article with a slightly different title. Unfortunately, actions like this do not help to show good faith on your part.
You obviously have a great deal of energy for working on biographical articles, so that's certainly something Wikipedia can use. And indeed you seem to be genuinely desirous of making a positive contribution. So in the interest of helping to make sure that that happens, I'd like to reach out and ask you if you wouldn't please start making an effort to be more mindful of the encyclopedia's policies in your future efforts?
Thanks! Mwelch 01:53, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
- First of all, allow me thank you sincerely for reading what I had to say and taking the time out to reply. I really do appreciate the fact that you are thinking about it.
- Two minor notes before getting into the rest of it: 1) you wrote your reply to me on my user page, rather than on my talk page. I went ahead and moved it for you, but please try to remember to put further comments on the talk page, and 2) I noted on my user page that I am actually not Matt Welch. My name is Michael. 8-)
- Now as to the issue at hand, I appreciate the fact that you attempted to re-write the article, but what you need to keep in mind is that the primarly reason the article was rejected the first time around is that the individual is not notable by Wikipedia's standards. The primary issue was not how the artcile was written; it was simply that Pastor DuBose does not merit an article at all in the first place, no matter how well-written it might be. Now, I know you disagree with that assessment. But the community has already made it's judgment on that point and quite convincingly. About a dozen other editors chimed in and not a single person other than you found this person to be notable. You are not required to agree, by any means, but we do need you to at least please put your personal disagreement aside, accept the community's consensus on the issue even though you don't like it, and move on to helping out on other articles.
- So what I'm saying is that re-writing the article is simply not the point here. The person was not notable then. And nothing has happened between now and then that would increase the person's notoriety. So re-creating the article was not an appropriate thing to do.
- Do you see what I am saying? Mwelch 02:12, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] What makes a person notable
Your arguments in defense of articles such as Preston Dunn and William S. Gannaway are troubling, particularly given that, as I've said, you'd been notified before about this issue of your creating articles for non-notable people. You seem to have your own standards for what you consider to be "notable". And while you are entitled to your opinion personally on that point, it would be helpful if you would understand that when you contribute to Wikipedia, you are participating in the process as part of the community. That means you need to respect the community's polices on what makes a person notable, not stubbornly insist on applying your own standards, even though you've been advised otherwise.
The community's standards are outlined here. Please read it, and please respect it. For you to defend a subject's notablity on the basis of things like "he worked with the elderly" or "he went on combat missions" or "he was notable within the community of Portales, New Mexico" flies in the face of this community's established policies for notability. For you to offer reasons like that means that either you haven't read the community's policies, or you have read them and are just choosing to ignore them. Which ever the case is, I'm asking you if you would please correct that situation.
Perhaps, when considering creating future biographical articles, you can take a moment out and first ask yourself, "Has this person, or what this person created, been the subject of books or articles in major magazines or newspapers that the person or their organization did not publish themselves?" If the answer to that question is "no", then you should probably be thinking twice about creating a Wikipedia article about them. There are a few exceptions here and there, of course, but since you seem to be having some trouble with the notability issue right now, I think that might be a good guideline with which you can start. [edit] Harry Pringle article
Billy, you might want to go to WP:DRV for resetting this, as deletion review (rather than outright recreation) is the proper procedure. I'm certainly going to assume good faith, but such recreations are often seen as vandalism. Just sayin'. --Dennisthe2 00:45, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Frellsen Reese
A tag has been placed on Frellsen Reese, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as articles for deletion. If you can indicate how Frellsen Reese is different from the previously posted material, or if you can indicate why this article should not be deleted, I advise you to place the template hangon underneath the other template on the article, and also put a note on Talk:Frellsen Reese saying why this article should stay. An admin should check for such edits before deleting the article. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Please read our criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 4 under General criteria. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. We welcome your help in trying to improve Wikipedia, and we request you to follow these instructions.
AfD is not a vote. Please do not repost this material. Take it to deletion review if you disagree with the results of the AfD. --Onorem 13:18, 27 March 2007 (UTC) As stated above, I've deleted the article as a repost of an article deleted by AFD. If you feel an AFD deletion was improper, you need to follow the procedures at Wikipedia:Deletion review rather than just reposting the article. Thanks, NawlinWiki 17:20, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sources for your articles
Apparently the primary source for the bio articles in here is your unpublished master's thesis : Billy Hathorn, "The Republican Party in Louisiana, 1920-1980," Master's thesis (1980), Northwestern State University at Natchitoches. This does not count as a RS, and WP is not a place to transfer the pages from your OR. Even if it were to be published it would probably violate the intent of NOR.DGG 23:49, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] How not to write bio articles
The subject of the bio is notable. His or her children and parents are not notable, though they are usually mentioned. His or her spouse(es) are notable/. The details of their life and career are not, unless they are notable in their own right. The details of the early education are only of minor interest, along with the details of the early career, unless famous for that career. The details of whom the subject defeated in elections are not--if the opponents are notable, they will have their own articles. The details of the subjects illness are not, and--if living--are dubious also under BLP.
As for style, when a link to a WP article for a person is given, the b and d years are not usually required, for they will be in the linked article. It just adds to the clutter for the linked years. When a person is in a category, it automatically places the person in supercategories. Encyclopedic wording requires conciseness- the expansion of the exposition into as many sentences as possible is typical of obituary writing and political advertising, and inappropriate here. \
If too much or the wrong kind of detail is given, it tends, rightly or wrongly, to arouse suspicion of copyvio, personal or political advertising, spam, POV, and COI . This tends to make an article susceptible to AfD. Many of your articles have already been nominated for AfD, though not yet by me. If you are going to do the work, write them so they stay in. You will of course understand, that this is a friendly comment.DGG 04:38, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Problem
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions to the George C. Brian article, but for legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.
DS 20:45, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Bickley
A tag has been placed on Cecil A. Bickley, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add hangon
on the top of the page (below the existing db tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position.

[edit] Dates , places, and links
Please see the comment on the Malcolm P. Herbert talk page. DGG 04:01, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
-
- Related question: place. I tried editing one of the articles removing the town and parish of the peripheral characters in the plot, but I soon realized that it did help tell them apart. But again, just as you suggested on my talk page, this might be limited to the immediately relevant ones--and perhaps not both town and parish, especially for the larger towns. I recognize sometimes it's relevant, eg., is the opponent from the same immediate locality. So I'm going to check over what I did, and you too might make it read smoother this way, too, for you can select better than I can.
- Except for people like monarchs and presidents, the bio articles here usually mention only the brothers and sisters and children, not the grandchildren. Birth date is I suppose relevant for brothers and sisters at least. (Similarly parents with both dates)
- Links in general--I think you are using a program that automatically links the first mention of a particular year in the narrative. But this does not always make sense, because the use of this link is to produce: Events during ____, and probably it should be linked only for key events, such as the year of an election. Links to professions, etc.: some people do link al such words the first time they occur, but again, I think it's confusing. I am also wondering about links to such words as Senator--I think in most places they too slow down the narrative. People reading one of these articles will know what a senator is.
I'm enjoying reading them all, so thanks. IDGG 23:59, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dr. Maurer
- For physicians, the form of the name used is Dr.Ralph E. Maurer which usually avoids ambiguity
- . Physicians are added to WP if their professional accomplishments are notable. This has usually required at least some of the following: A/appointments as clinical professors in medical schools
B/ Published medical work of their own in books or numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals C/ Membership in a major specialty society, D/ membership in the appropriate elite professional society, such as FACS or FACP, E/ An award of some kind--the profession gives out many awards, so any notable doctor will have at least one or two, F/ Articles about their work in medical or general journals. For physicians before the 1950s, C/ & D/ are sometimes not necessary
- With politicians you've been using a loophole about the stat legislatures. There isn't one here.
I advise you to stick with politicians.
- If you really want to do medical biographies, get a list of the members of the National Academy of Medicine and do each of them. The members of the national Academy of Science already mostly have articles.
- The amount of detail in a professional bio is limited to the education and immediate family and anything really interesting--e.g., some are also poets or musicians. .
- I very strongly advise you NOT to include the final paragraph from the obit. It makes every article you do look suspicious, even if rewritten. The usual place to give the names of spouses and children is either at the end of the lede paragraph, of right after the education. For living minor children, birthdates are not usually given unless the guy has listed them on his own web p. DGG 17:29, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re:consensus of administrators
Not exactly; WP has very particular policies on what may or may not be included, and how one may go about meeting those criteria. In one instance there was copyright violation, and in another you cited your own work. In other cases, the minimum requirements for notability were not met. This is a particular problem with "local history" type articles - Wikipedia has a much larger audience than a town, city, or state, and therefore needs to reflect that when deciding who or what is included. The point of AfD is to get more than one person's opinion, and clearly there were more people than just one or two who thought your articles didn't meet requirements, or violated some other policy.
I also highly doubt that it's a personal issue; I have found that if someone has made one article that doesn't meet requirements, they've usually made more, and just because no one saw said article before doesn't mean it gets a bye and may remain on the site. Policies and guidelines have to be applied uniformly regardless of spans of time or other circumstances; it's the only way that Wikipedia can fulfill its function.
All that said, though, the solution to your problem is simple: before creating an article, make sure you know what criteria need to be met in order for an article to be included here, and make sure you have third party objective sources to show that those criteria are met. [edit] Re: Cecil A. Bickely article
Actually, I did not nominate the article for DYK, I just notified you that it was on the page.
As for the deletion, someone nominated it for deletion — see the archived discussion on deletion, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cecil A. Bickley. While the article met the DYK selection criteria, that does not automatically mean it will kept in a deletion discussion. The discussion followed the AFD process - with 5 days for discussion, and a unanimous delete consensus.
If after reading the section of the Deletion policy on review, you feel that it should be undeleted, the process for appealing the decision is outlined in Wikipedia:Deletion review.

[edit] Troubles
Hi Billy. You seem to be a prolific writer of biography articles, but most seem to bring problems. If you were to footnote the sentences in your articles and follow WikiProject Biography 11 easy steps to producing at least a B article, I really think that you could clear up most of the problems that you are having. To give you an idea of how you might revise your work, take a look at User:Jreferee/Contributions, such as Serge Voronoff. Notice how in Serge Voronoff just about every sentence (except the lead paragraph) is footnoted. Also note how the format follows WikiProject Biography 11 easy steps to producing at least a B article. Footnotes and format really are the way to keep others from submitting your article to AfD. If you would like help on any of this, please let me know. -- Jreferee 18:44, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

Hey, I see that you've gone around and changed a number of the references to Governor and President to president and governor. If you'll read wp:manual of style#Titles you'll find the phrase "When referring to a specific office, generally use uppercase" which is usually taken to mean that if a person is running for President, that's short for "President of the United States of America" and is a specific office. [edit] Notability of Joe A. Kelly
Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Joe A. Kelly, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Joe A. Kelly seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Joe A. Kelly, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 02:46, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

I've nominated Eugene P. Watson, an article you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that Eugene P. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Eugene P. [edit] Red River
Hi, A year ago, you added some information to Red River about a navigation project (diff). However, you appended it to a paragraph that discusses the 19th-century project that cleared the Great Raft from the river. I would think that the two projects are unrelated. Could you clarify? --Smack (talk) 23:11, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
This is what I added, I think. I should be in a separate paragraph from the information on the logjam. I put it into a separate paragraph.
The Red River Valley Association was formed to lobby Congress to provide funds for the navigation project. Among supporters of the navigation projects were longterm Louisiana Democratic senators, Allen J. Ellender, J. Bennett Johnston, Jr. and Russell B. Long, Louisiana's former Fourth District Congressman Joseph David "Joe D." Waggonner, Jr., and the late Shreveport Mayor Littleberry Calhoun Allen, Jr. This project has been completed and the lock system now allows navigation of barge traffic as far north as Shreveport.
Thanks, BH
- It reads better now, but still doesn't explain what "the navigation project" and "the lock system" are. --Smack (talk) 21:12, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Smack, I tried to adjust it again to meet your objections. It may require further research.

[edit] Judy Petty Wolf
Hi Billy Hathorn. You are off to such a great start on the article Judy Petty Wolf that it may qualify to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page under the Did you know... section. The Main Page gets about 4,000,000 hits per day and appearing on the Main Page may help bring publicity and assistance to the article. However, there is a five day from article creation window for Did you know... nominations. Before five days pass from the date the article was created and if you haven't already done so, please consider nominating the article to appear on the Main Page by posting a nomination at Did you know suggestions. If you do nominate the article for DYK, please cross out the article name on the "Good" articles proposed by bot list. Also, don't forget to keep checking back at Did you know suggestions for comments regarding your nomination. Again, great job on the article. -- Jreferee (Talk) 21:05, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words. They are rare on Wikipedia. I don't recall how to put something under DYK. The last time I had an article put under DYK Cecil A. Bickley, it was deleted about two weeks later by irate editors. Could you file this for me?
Just as soon as you made this recommendation, someone falsely charged a copyright violation. Of course, I did write the article from scratch. It was another group that copied this from Wikipedia but with attribution.

[edit] Ken Coon/Bob Riley article problem
Ken Coon's page: "Riley defeated Coon, 392,896 (62.8 percent) to 233,090 (37.2 percent)."
Bob C. Riley's page: "Riley topped Coon, 392,869 (62.8 percent) to 233,090 (37.2 percent) and secured seventy-two counties."
Presumably only one of them is right.

[edit] Notability of D.L. Dykes, Jr.
A tag has been placed on D.L. Dykes, Jr., requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. --ROGER TALK 04:28, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hodges Gardens State Park
A tag has been placed on Hodges Gardens State Park, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam.
If you can indicate why the subject of this article is not blatant advertising, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add hangon
on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would help make it encyclopedic, as well as adding any citations from reliable sources to ensure that the article will be verifiable. [edit] Frank W. Mayborn DYK
I didn't say anything on the DYK page, but consider the following changes to the article (to insure that it makes DYK). I think people prefer that the DYK fact has an inline citation, which doesn't appear in the article.
The DYK fact mentioned that there were 87 disputed primary votes but it doesn't say so in the article. I have fixed that by adding the fact though it would be better if there is a citation of that fact. Chergles 20:44, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
The DYK was at risk to not being selected. I've fixed it (adding an inline citation to the article) so that your DYK may win. Chergles 17:04, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
Thank you, Chergles, for helping with the DYK. I normally don't fool with those at all, but I thought Frank Mayborn was an important overlooked person. Until I did his bio, I did not know that he cast the tie-breaking vote to certify LBJ as the Senate nominee.

[edit] Facts, Sources and Full Citations
You are adding a lot of great facts to Wikipedia, and for that I thank you! However, your edits are fairly poorly sourced, for the most part. If you're grabbing lots of facts from good reference sources, please cite your sources inline. Just putting a list of URLs at the end of the article isn't sufficient. You should probably use the cite web template. The publisher of the web site is usually very relevant and tying it to specific facts through the use of inline citations makes thinks very clear. Adding a reflist template to the references section makes this very easy. Thanks! Toddstreat1 17:58, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Houston, we have a problem
I'm going to ask you to sit down in a nice comfy chair and read - very carefully - our policy on sourcing. Then our policy on neutrality. After that, our biographical inclusion guidelines. But before you read any of those - and this one is really important - you need to read our policy on living individuals. Twice. Slowly. And then a third time.
I am not joking here. It's a long time since I've seen an account with a deleted edit list as long as yours, and you don't seem to have grasped why these things are being deleted.
So, while we appreciate your enthusiasm, I'd remind you in the most forceful terms possible that Wikipedia is not a tabloid. Thank you. Guy (Help!) 20:28, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
- Looking into this further, it is clear to me that what you are doing is what we call original research. This is fine for a local history site or a personal website, but is absolutely forbidden on Wikipedia, which is a tertiary source. We do not include content cut and pasted from obituaries (which is a copyright violation) or material gleaned from interviews with the subject (which is original research). What you write would go down really well with a history wiki, but not here, I'm afraid. I am asking around to see if I can find a better project to steer you towards. Dear Billy Hathorn, I note that you recently did some style edits of Ralph Flanders. Would you consider doing a peer review, as well? Sincerely, HopsonRoad 23:01, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for taking the time to review this article. You suggest that "The article might should have a paragraph or two saying that Flanders underestimated the communist conspiracy even on the assumption that McCarthy overstated it," especially in light of Venona. It's hard to measure what Flanders's estimate was, since he was calling attention to the external menace, which he felt was so tremendous that it would leave the US and Canada isolated as free nations.
I feel that estimation of the internal threat of communism is a more appropriate discussion for the Joseph McCarthy article. The scope of this article should be limited to what Flanders thought and whether others agreed with him. You suggest that the article "assumes that Senator Flanders was right on communism and that Senator McCarthy was wrong." I feel that either assumption would be a POV. In augmenting the article, I drew on published sources available to me. If you have published sources that you can recommend to further describe how others reacted to Flanders's assessment of McCarthy's approach to fighting communism, I feel that they should be included for completeness. You could leave such suggestions at the Talk:Ralph_Flanders page.
In his March, 1954 speech and his autobiography, Flanders made it clear that a "housecleaning" of communists in government was probably necessary. Flanders was concerned that the "house," itself, was under communist encroachment from outside—a much greater cause of alarm that Flanders wanted to alert his colleagues and the public to.HopsonRoad 00:32, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

1. I have had two, possibly three, articles deleted after they were given "Did You Know?" status.
2. A thesis or dissertation is a secondary source. These works can be assessed through many Inter Library Loan services. Most were never published. There is no reason to presume they are inaccurate.
3. Lesser-known politicians and others often have interesting life stories as much as current sitting members of legislative bodies may have. Just because a candidate was not elected does not mean he is unimportant.
4. Mayors of small cities have a place of importance too -- they are notable in their local areas. Many people on Wikipedia.org are unknown outside their own bailiwicks.
5. None have disclosed factual errors in my writing. There have been some errors, and I believe I corrected every one of them that I found as soon as I realized there was an error. I have seen other articles with a lot of weak style and punctuation errors that are never given much oversight.
6. A newspaper is a primary source, but Wikipedia.org considers it a secondary source. I suppose there can be secondary works within a newspaper, however.
7. I think that you should err in favor of keeping borderline articles instead of being committeed against them on grounds of lack of "notability". Of all the articles on Wikipedia, I have never heard of probably 70 percent of them myself. I wonder if some of the editors oppose an article because they are unfamiliar with the subject.
Send other specific questions and I will attempt to reply.

2a. Masters theses are normally considered academically not at the same level as doctoral theses, and are usually not accepted as RSs at WP--they are one step above term papers. This is especially the case when the bulk of many articles relies on a single one of it that you wrote yourself.
3a. the standard here is notable, not interesting. i agree much of this is interesting, and you should write a few books of local history. Thisis a general encyclopedia, not a collection of political anecdotes.
4a. The consensus here is simply against you; they may be interesting and historically indiciative, but thats doesn not make them worth including in an encyclopedia.
5a. One key style problem is dwelling excessively on minor details, like people's inlaws and where they came from, or the detailed background of all the other candidates in an election. The articles are supposed to be about the subject, not the subject and all his family and all is rivals and colleagues. another key style problem is writing all the articles to the same length and format, whether r not there is much to say. For the least important, they simply include yet smaller details. People's elementary school and early jobs are important content only for the most important biographical subjects.
6a. The most important source problem is obituaries in local newspapers, which are simply not RSs for anything, except to the extent they can be used by historians in their research as representing what the family and friends wanted to say at the time.
7a. The question is , what will someone potentially want to hear about. We do keep borderline articles. Saying we keep articles on all members of a state legislature (and we do) is already by most views pretty borderline.

- DGG is right here. I am sure there is some Wikia project for local history where this stuff will be bang on, let me see if I can find it. Guy (Help!) 22:34, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

- OK, we have:
- But - and here's the biggie - although many states have a Wikia, there is no http://louisiana.wikia.com - yet. If you were to gather a couple of people from Wikipedia:WikiProject Louisiana and set it up, I would be more than happy to give you copies of your many deleted articles for transfer over there. Would this be of interest? It's got to be frustrating playing this game of dodge-the-delete, and it's a shame that so much effort is going to waste. Guy (Help!) 22:46, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
-
-
- Further to Guy's suggestion above, as I say on the RFC I also think there is a gaping hole waiting to be filled by you at Wikibooks - Wikibooks aims to create a textbook as opposed to an encyclopedia, and hence there WP:USEFUL and WP:INTERESTING are valid arguments, and your articles would be very useful & interesting to anyone studying the history of Louisiana (and to a lesser extent Texas). I suspect they'd jump at the chance to publish your thesis as a whole as well, copyright/consent permitting. — iridescent 15:20, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

-
-
- Or, if you want to earn some money, I think it would probably have quite a large sales in Louisiana--people like reading about local figures, even if not really notable. (In fact, I might buy a copy, even if not my home state) The only problem is the GFDL, but you could certainly write other ones not yet submitted to WP and copyright those parts, which would make the whole thing publishable. I noticed you are a pretty prolific article writer. I noticed you primarily create articles about the Arklatex area with a focus on the "LA" stuff. I am from Humble, TX and went to TAMU so I know about some of the people you are talking about (My wife went to SFASU so you may not like her as much as me :) ).
Some of the articles you have been writing are great! Mary Evelyn Parker as the first woman treasurer of Lousisana. Others however are not exactly notable as the sources backing up the article are pretty shaky. I know this is hard but some of the articles you have created just aren't notable enough for Wikipedia and it is causing people concern. I just wanted to bring it up as you are creating nice articles. I just think the subject of the articles needs a bit more notability. spryde | talk 23:16, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your well researched response! Billy, there's a RFC (request for comment) about you. It's somewhat like a complaint. After it's finished, it could be used against you if others bring it to the Arbitration Committee. If you would like any kind of help, such as adoption, I am willing to help, even with Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User, if this is beneficial. I believe in friendly discussion as much as possible. IN VAST WAREHOUSE, FAMILY CARVES OUT AN ELEGANT HOME E-MAIL Print Single-Page Save Share Del.icio.us Digg Facebook Newsvine Permalink By SANDRA SALMANS Published: April 23, 1987 LEAD: NOBODY would ever accuse the Toledanos, voracious collectors, of doing things in a small way. Ben C. Toledano, a lawyer with an ample girth and an appetite for modern Southern literature, buys four copies of every book by Walker Percy or Eudora Welty, one for each of the Toledanos' children. NOBODY would ever accuse the Toledanos, voracious collectors, of doing things in a small way. Ben C. Toledano, a lawyer with an ample girth and an appetite for modern Southern literature, buys four copies of every book by Walker Percy or Eudora Welty, one for each of the Toledanos' children. His wife, Roulhac - who has renovated homes in New Orleans, written about New Orleans architecture and now runs an antiques shop here - said that they just entertain hugely.
For us, she said, less is not more. More is more.
So when the Toledanos, their son and three daughters, two dogs, a cat and collections of antique furniture, china, dolls and doll furniture moved here from New Orleans four years ago, they wanted lots of space. What they got was a warehouse.
For a trifle under $200,000 they bought a three-story warehouse that had been built in 1914 for a wholesale grocer and, more recently, had been used by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. The warehouse was structurally sound, but it presented some design problems: the space was vast (6,000 square feet on each floor) and irregular (a trapezoid measuring 90 feet along the front, 95 feet along the back, 53 feet on one side and 122 feet on the other).
After four years and $200,000 more in renovation costs, the vast top floor of the warehouse has been turned into an elegant home with a manageable number of rooms, none of them immense except for the 1,000-square-foot library, which holds 12,000 books.
To begin with, the Toledanos had to clear out a space that for years had been inhabited mostly by pigeons. Then, without benefit of either architect or floor plan, they attacked the space itself. We just started out with one big room, said Mr. Toledano, who has helped his wife renovate homes as a hobby. His name is from his Spanish ancestors who settled in New Orleans; his wife, who was born in Texas, has a Huguenot first name.
Mr. Toledano laid two-by-four's on the floor to mark where walls would go. That way you walk through your floor plan, he said. If you want to make a room larger, you just move your two-by-four. The only modules, such as they were, were the thick pine posts that punctuated the space every 15 to 20 feet.
The front of the building overlooks the town and is quieter than the rear, and there the Toledanos put four bedrooms and two baths, all of them coming off a long corridor. The rear of the building, which overlooks the C.&O. Railway tracks just 20 feet away and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance, was turned into common space: the library and a large living room leading into a dining room. The kitchen is in the middle of the building. That way, Mr. Toledano said, Every bedroom has access to the kitchen and the entrance hall without going through any other room.
To light the living and dining rooms the Toledanos punched 11 windows in the rear wall of the warehouse. To light the interior space, they put a skylight over the kitchen and made a separate solarium with a 15-by-20-foot skylight. They kept the rafters over the solarium. My idea was to change things as little as possible, Mrs. Toledano said. It's a warehouse, so let it be a warehouse.
For the same reason, she said, she disdained conventional drapes for the windows, covering them instead with either shutters or Roman shades fashioned out of her old curtains. For windowsills in the bedrooms she found old stair treads. And for the floor the Toledanos bought maple boards that, because they were irregular or riddled with wormholes, had been destined for heavy crating. (continued)

[edit] Named
Notice the "name=Stuff" goes inside the tag, and in fact the closing slash is at the end of the original It is mostly nonsense, although it may have some substance. But really, it is just nonsense.
Generates this:
- This is an entirely made up example.[1] It is mostly nonsense,[2] although it may have some substance.[1] But really, it is just nonsense.[2]
And then using Reflist, generates this:

Hello. When creating categories, it is important that you assign your new category to a parent category. For example, Category:Arizona Republicans should be within Category:Republicans (United States). Organizing categories makes finding information easier and your categories more useful. [edit] AfD nomination of David R. Cortez
An editor has nominated David R. Cortez, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/David R. Cortez and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 22:06, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Good work on Crispin Sanchez and a little advice about referencing
Hi Billy!
First of, nice work on the Crispin Sanchez article. Its incredibly well done for a new article, and im very happy with your thorough wikifying and referencing. Also, im pretty much impressed that you improved the article so soon after i tagged it for cleanup (Though it makes me feel slightly sad you gave those tags such little time to enjoy the page :))
Apart from that, i have a little advise about referencing that you might find usefull. I notice that in your version there are several references used multiple times. There are a few problems with this: First, the source of the article becomes quite unreadable due to the excessive amount of links, Second, the same reference gets listed multiple times, and last: Its more work then needed :).
[edit] Named Referencing
If you want to reference to a source multiple times, you can create something that is called a Named Reference. A named reference works like this: You give a reference a name, and instead of simply adding the full reference next time, you simply add the name to that reference. This will be much shorter text wise, and it will only add the reference to the list once. Here is how its done:
The first reference is fully written out, but includes a name=<Name> part after the opening tag. Example:.

Any subsequent addition of the reference should be written as: ref name=<Name>. Example:

For an example of an article containing named referencing, have a look at your own Crispin Sanchez article, which i edited to include this.
Well, so much for me writing. Kind regards, and happy editing to you! Excirial (Talk,Contribs) 22:01, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
Thank you, Excirial, your explanation is one that I can follow. Someone else tried to explain this procedure to me earlier, but I did not grasp it. I will keep your example for quick reference.

[edit] Speedy deletion of Glen Starnes
Please do not make personal attacks. Wikipedia has a strict policy against personal attacks. Attack pages and images are not tolerated by Wikipedia and are speedily deleted. Users who continue to create or repost such pages and images in violation of our biographies of living persons policy will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Thank you.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding hangon
to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Kesh (talk) 22:14, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
- How can I place hangon should not be placed on talk pages. Please remove it and place it on the content page. to an article that was immediately deleted. As far as being a personal attack, the article is a compilation of news articles about the individual. He is given space to reply in the article. Billy Hathorn (talk) 17:41, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
- The article was entirely based on negative information, and contained no actual biographical information about the subject. That is a violation of WP:BLP. As for "space to reply in the article," I'm not sure what you're talking about. We don't expect the subject of an article to log in and defend themselves. If you really feel this is unjustified, you can discuss it with the deleting admin here. If they refuse to undelete, you can make your case on WP:DRV. -- Kesh (talk) 21:49, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

You need to use the cite web template to get the ref to display correctly. is the minimum information required to make it work. Mjroots (talk) 05:07, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
- How to use the cite web template:-
Say you want to use this website as a reference:-
http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080508/OBITUARIES01/805080334/1060/NEWS01
- Using the template, the url goes in here
- Then the title of the aricle goes in here

- Then the access date goes in here
- Finally the publisher goes in here
, which, when given a refname produces a ref like this.[3] and appears in the reflist like this:-
- ^ a b Reference information here.
- ^ a b Notice how these letters correspond to each instance of this particular reference.
- ^ Eddy Shell given his final salutes. Shreveport Times. Retrieved on 2008-05-16.
Hope that explains things for you. Mjroots (talk) 12:51, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
