I can't find an official source for the spelling of Bill's complete name. However, the spelling used by the previous editor ("William Fontaine De La Terre D'auterive") gets 0 hits on Google, and doesn't match the pronunciation used on the show. The previous spelling ("William Fontaine De La Teaur D'auterive") gets two Google hits - one of which is this article. The spelling I've put in is William Fontaine De La Tour D'auterive, which is by far the most common spelling on Google, and which matches the show's pronunciation of the name. If anyone can find an official source for the spelling of his full name, that'd be great...

Well, the captioning on the DVD sets may be authoritative, but they just muddy the situation further. In the season three episode "Nine Pretty Darn Angry Men", the caption spells his name as "William Fontaine Delatur Dauterive", which doesn't match anything here. The official website just lists him as "Bill Dauterive" - no help there. I remember seeing a few books about the show on Amazon a while back, and a couple TV ads for them, but they seem to be out of print now. I disagree with listing his "official" first name as "Guillaume," because only his cousins, such as Gilbert, call him by that. And he's often called *William* Fontaine Delatour Dauterive, or William Dauterive.--Jmg124 (talk) 12:44, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

It is definitely as you currently have it. "De la tour" is French for "of/from the tower," whereas there is no such word as "teaur" and "de la terre" ("of the earth") sounds neither like what he's saying, nor nearly as realistic a French name as "de la tour." Just curious, is it high river, as in a river that runs high on high ground, or upper river, as in, well, upper river? No biggie really. Depending on who does the captions, they could probably do his name a number of ways.Isaac Crumm 02:32, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

The episode "Tankin’ It to the Streets" clearly shows his name as "William Fontaine DeLaTour Dauterive," so I changed his name on the page to reflect that. He's only addressed as "Guillaume" by his cousins.--Jmg124 (talk) 19:07, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Is there any official details on it; is Bill active duty, retired, or just a civilian wearing his old Army uniform? They refer to him as a sergeant, which appears to be the rank on his uniform, but he would be waaaaaay to old to reasonably be an E-5. Is barber a civilian job that permits wearing an old uniform? Or is it just something the Army guys at the base let him do? Just curious Isaac Crumm 02:32, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
