Billy Coutu hockey sports card (1924 Champ's Cigarettes, which is defunct).
In 1924, Champ's Cigarettes issued a series of 40 NHL hockey sports cards. This was only the third time hockey cards were ever produced and it was the first time cards had been printed since World War I.
Champ's Cigarettes no longer exists. Given that and the age of the card, the copyright should have expired. However, this image scan is copyrighted by Westendgirl, who made the scan and owns two copies of the card. The image is made available under license to Wikipedia for non-profit educational use. However, due to Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp. it is fine to use this on Wikipedia even without her permission.
The two-dimensional work of art depicted in this image is in the public domain in the United States and in those countries with a copyright term of life of the author plus 100 years. Under American copyright law, originality of expression is necessary for copyright protection, and a mere photograph of an out-of-copyright work may not be protected under American copyright law. |
This image is of a card, and the copyright for it is most likely owned by the publisher of the card. It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of cards
qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Fair use for more information. |
