William "Billy" Paynter (born July 13, 1984 in Liverpool) is a professional footballer who plays for Swindon Town.

Paynter joined Southend from Hull City on August 7, 2006 for a fee of £200,000, although he actually joined the Shrimpers a few days earlier on loan, to enable him to play in their match against Stoke.
Paynter had been signed on loan for Hull City on November 17, 2005 by then manager Peter Taylor from Port Vale, prior to a permanent transfer for an initial fee of £150,000 in the January transfer window. Team-mate Sam Collins also made the switch to the Tigers at the same time.
Paynter's preferred position is striker, but he has also played on the right wing for both City and Vale, as well as for a Football League Under-21 team (selected and managed by Peter Taylor) in a game against an Italian Serie B side, a match which took place at the KC Stadium in February 2006.
Former Hull City manager Brian Horton handed Paynter his Port Vale debut in May 2001. At only 16 years and 294 days old, this made him the youngest Vale player for 20 years, and his debut goal in September 2002 made him their youngest scorer for 24 years. He was voted as their Player of the Season in 2004–05.
Paynter failed to make an impression at Southend in the first half of the 2006–07 season, where a mixture of poor form and a hamstring injury hampered his progress. On the last day of the January transfer window, he was loaned out to Bradford City on a month's loan.[1] Playing in his first game at Valley Parade against Nottingham Forest, he scored a last minute equaliser to make it 2–2.[2] He played 15 times for Bradford City scoring four goals after his loan was extended to the end of the season.[3]
Paynter signed for Swindon Town during the 2007–08 season. He hit a hat-trick against Bournemouth in September 2007 and followed this up with a double against Gillingham in a 5–0 win in early October 2007. In one week in January 2008 he scored a goal and an own goal in an FA Cup replay with Barnet,[4] before he was sent off in a League One game with Crewe Alexandara.[5]
