Billy Edelin is an American former college basketball player for the Syracuse Orange from Silver Spring, Maryland who was a member of Syracuse's 2003 NCAA National Championship team.

Edelin was slated to join Syracuse in the 2001-02 season, but after two female students accused him of rape and sexual harassment, Edelin was suspended in what was supposed to be his freshman year at Syracuse.[1]
Edelin was eventually cleared of those allegations, but was suspended 12 games in his freshman year during the 2002-03 season for violations of NCAA Bylaw 14.7.2 (Outside Competition) after playing in an unsanctioned summer basketball league.[2] This led to production of a "Free Billy" t-shirt among fans who wanted to see Edelin finally play a game in a Syracuse uniform. Finally, on January 18, 2003, Edelin made his Syracuse debut against Pittsburgh. The guard made a huge contribution in the team's first National Championship, leading the team in scoring in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament with 15 points against Manhattan and 20 points in SU's comeback win versus Oklahoma State. In the National Championship game against Kansas, Edelin added three steals.
In his sophomore season, Edelin became the starting point guard. In 17 games, Edelin averaged 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists. However, Edelin left the team on February 10, 2004 for undisclosed personal reasons and would not return to the team.
In his junior year, Edelin missed an early part of the 2004-05 season to catch up on school work. He returned to action on December 1, 2004, and eventually worked his way back into the starting lineup. Much like his sophomore season, Edelin left the team again for undisclosed reasons, and would never play another game for Syracuse.
Following 2004-05, Edelin transferred to NAIA Mountain State University in West Virginia. However, he left after one week, ending a rocky college career.[4]
With Syracuse, Edelin played 60 games spanning from 2002-05 but never played a full season. He had career averages of 8.7 points and 3.0 assists per game.

After leaving Syracuse, Edelin joined Verviers-Pepinster (Belgium) in August 2006. However, because Edelin hadn't played organized basketball since midway through the 2004-05 season, lack of conditioning led to him being cut in September. [5]
On November 27, 2006, Edelin signed with the CBA's Great Falls Explorers.[6] Edelin has declared himself elegible for the 2007 NBA draft. [7]

In June 2001, Edelin played for the U.S. in the National 18 & Under World Championships, held in Douai, France. The U.S. squad won the event for the first time, and Edelin played a large part, scoring 22 points and eight assists in the title game, a 102-99 victory against Canada.

- Edelin spent the 2000-01 school year at Oak Hill Academy (Va.) and was named the Warriors’ most valuable player after averaging 21.2 points, 8.2 assists and 4.4 rebounds a game.
- Edelin earned all-tournament honors at the Holiday Prep Classic (Nev.), Glaxo-Wellcome Holiday Invitational (N.C.) and the St. James Invitational (Md.). . .He was the MVP at the Slam Dunk Challenge (N.Y.) and the National Hoops Classic (Ohio).
- Edelin was a third-team Parade All-American and a third-team selection on the USA Today All-USA Boys Basketball Team. He was picked a sixth-team High School All-American by Bob Gibbons All-Star Report.
