Bill Porter (Oct 3, 1943--), an American author who writes under the name Red Pine, is an acclaimed translator and interpreter of Chinese and Sanskrit texts, primarily Buddhist, including poetry and Sutras. After dropping out of graduate school at Columbia University in 1972, he lived in Taiwan (including four years in a Buddhist monastery) and Hong Kong. Starting in 1989, he made three trips to China, visiting Zen temples and the graves of poets, and seeking out hermits. In 1999 and 2000, he taught Buddhism and Taoism at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas.[1] He now lives in Port Townsend, Washington.[2]
