[edit] Hatred of Runways

A recurring theme of Bill Gunston's work is the insistence that any aircraft requiring the use of runways would be obsolete in modern warfare. He cited the F-15 Eagle as an example of this trend, insisting that "modern" aircraft such as the BAe Harrier would be more survivable owing to their VSTOL capability.
