[edit] Anthony Howell
Born and bred in the New Forest, Anthony Howell attended Hounsdown Secondary School and Brockenhurst College before moving to Wales to study English at the University of Wales Swansea. After graduating, he chose to specialize in the Romantic Period and took an MA in Romanticism at Bristol University. Studying under Prof. Timothy Webb, Howell was awarded a distinction mark for his dissertation and represented the department at the 3rd International Student Byron Conference in Messolonghi, Greece. Having made a welcome return to his alma mater, Swansea University, he is now studying for a Ph.D under the supervision of Prof. Caroline Franklin. Howell’s thesis is on Gypsies & Romanticism 1783-1850, probing themes of the outcast, marginality and counter-culture, as well as Romantic primitivism, orientalism and xenophobia. His research interests more generally include the essays of William Hazlitt, Thomas de Quincey, the poetry of John Clare, and Ecocriticism.
