[edit] School Information
The school was built in 1991, after the district decided that a new high school was needed. The old high school is the current middle school, Big Walnut Middle School. The school just completed a multi-million dollar renovation that added extra classrooms and an atrium to the entryway.[citation needed]
[edit] Academics
Big Walnut recently earned a second "Excellent" designation from the Ohio Department of Education for outstanding student learning and achievements during the 2006-2007 school year.[citation needed] The school offers over one-hundred and eleven courses and a program of study that includes Advanced Placement or Honors opportunities in American History, American Literature, Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English 10, French 4, German 3 and 4, Physics, Physical Science, Spanish 3 and 4, and Government.[citation needed]
[edit] Athletics
The Big Walnut Golden Eagles football team participates in the Ohio High School Athletic Association, in Division III and is a member of the Ohio Capital Conference (OCC) Capital Division. The Eagles finished the 2007 season with a record-breaking 14-1 season, winning the Division III State Championship with a 17-10 victory over Licking Valley at Canton Fawcett Stadium. This marks the first time that any school in Delaware County has ever won a state title in football.[citation needed] The school also sponsors basketball, cheerleading, wrestling, softball, soccer, baseball, volleyball, tennis, cross-country and track, all of which compete in the OCC. The wrestling team is coming off of back-to-back OCC championships, and the volleyball program has long been a Central Ohio power. Their longtime rivals are the Olentangy Braves; however, they have developed rivalries with other area schools including New Albany, Westerville Central (Battle of the Birds) and Watkins Memorial.[original research?]
