Big Brother (Croatia)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Big Brother is a reality show shown on RTL Televizija in which a number of contestants live in an isolated house trying to avoid being evicted by the public with the aim of winning a large cash prize at the end of the run. It is based on the international Big Brother format produced by Endemol.

The house is situated in Jadran Film studios, in Dubrava section of Zagreb.

There were three seasons - 2004, 2005 and 2006. Big Brother Croatia is currently in its fourth masone, which began on Friday 7th September 2007.

The first Croatian season of Big Brother ran for 100 days, starting on 2004-09-18 and ending on 2004-12-26. It received high ratings and proved to be one of the rare successes for RTL Televizija in its first six months on Croatian television markets.

Despite huge commercial success and becoming cultural phenomenon of its season, the first season was subjected to much criticism. Andrija Hebrang, Croatian health minister at the time, complained about contestants smoking while the programme on air, which was against Croatian laws. In response to this, later live broadcasts were time-delayed. The show also created minor controversy due to a single homophobic statement ("If I knew I have a fag friend, I would kill him. I would kill him") made by Zdravko Lamot [1] [2].

Other critics complained about lack of diversity among contestants who didn't represent the average of Croatian population. They were mostly all in mid-20s, attending college, having liberal mindset and coming from well-to-do or upper-middle class families. Another exception was Saša Tkalčević, 32-year old biker from Bjelovar, husband and father of two children. He almost immediately established himself as frontrunner, indicating that the audience for the show and pool of potential voters was much older than previously thought.

In this first season, there were 12 original housemates. Later, two new housemates entered the house. Here all the participants:

  • Saša Tkalčević (32) - Winner on Day 100
  • Zdravko Lamot (23) - Runner-up on Day 100
  • Alen Macinić (24) - 3rd place on Day 100

[edit] Second season (2005)

Second season ran for 118 days, from 4th September to 30th December 2005.

Second season had radical changes in the format of show - the number of contestants was initially raised from 12 to 14; the pace of evictions and nominations was accelerated, and number of contestants were introduced at later stages.

The composition of contestants was different - they were much younger, less educated and generally perceived to be less mature. They also tended to represent various sections of Croatian population, missing in previous season. This was most evident with Matko Okmažić from Omiš, 25-year old son of restaurant owner, later revealed to be candidate of far right parties at local elections. Okmažić, although popular with contestants, outraged many liberal Croatians with his chauvinist views and later had to publicly apologise after singing "Jasenovac i Gradiška Stara", controversial song of Croatian far right singer Joško Tomičić [3]. He outraget feminist and gays rights groups afther a statement that he would kill his girlfriend if he found out she is cheating on him. [4] In 2001 local elections for Omiš city council he was 14th on the list for HB/HKDU hard right coalition. [5]

Despite this, Okmažić gradually evolved as the frontrunner for the prize. He never got nominated and was part of unofficial clan of self-declared "finalists". One of those was Hamdija Seferović, the only Roma contestant in the show. Mild-mannered and soft-spoken Seferović gradually won great deal of sympathies among Croatian public, first by publicly admitting his lack of primary education, then by cultivating the image of dedicated family man.

Because of this, the actual finals proved to be quite unpredictable. This was also due to Daca Bosančić, candidate who entered finals despite her female gender, status of replacement candidate and ethnic Serb background. In the end Seferović finished first and Bosančić finished second.

This result was often perceived as the victory of liberal-minded and pro-European Croatians over the right-wingers embodied in Matko Okmažić.

The second season, just like first, also had its share of criticism - mostly due to lack of creativity among producers - but surprisingly the rating were higher than the first seasons. There were also complaints about bet shops influencing the ultimate result by publishing low odds for evictees early in the week and many conspiracy theories about huge bets being used as a tool for manipulations.

  • Hamdija Seferović (26) - WINNER on Day 118
  • Daca Bosančić (21) - (entered on Day 55, runner-up on Day 118 )
  • Matko Okmažić (25) - (3rd place on Day 118)

[edit] Third Season (2006)

Third season began airing on 8th September 2006 and lasted for 99 days.

The prize is increased from 1 million HRK (134 000 EUR) to 1.5 million HRK (200 000 EUR), but it is expected that the actual winner would get significantly lower amount due to penalties for various House rule violations. Producers introduced this as a response to criticism of the second season, when they were perceived to be too tolerant of contestants' misbheaviour.

In the third season, the housemate were originally 12. Later, 2 new housemates - selected by the candidates from the pool of 4 - entered the House:

  • Danijel Rimanić (24) - WINNER on Day 99
  • Tomislav Šimićević (28) - Runner-up on Day 99 (He entered on Day 8)
  • Tanja Jovanović (20) - 3rd place on Day 99
  • Yameisy Sanchez Hernandez (24) - 4th place on Day 99
  • Violeta Halitaj (20) - 9th evicted on Day 92
  • Ante Seljak Jakovčev (23) - 8th evicted on Day 85
  • Ana Vrdoljak (22) - 7th evicted on Day 78
  • Zoran Stupa Ljubas (19) - 6th evicted on Day 71
  • Nikša Kekezović (27) - 5th evicted on Day 64
  • Lea Lemo (19) - 4th evicted on Day 57
  • Simon Hamoui (28) - 3rd evicted on Day 43
  • Dragica Vulić (25) - 2nd evicted on Day 29 (She entered on Day 8)
  • Mathias Gašparić (24) - 1st evicted on Day 15
  • Romina Prar (24) - Walked on Day 13

Tanja was the "guardian angel" and had the power to save one of her Housemates from being nominated. On the 2nd nominations, on Day 21, by votes of the Housemates Lea and Zoran were supposed to be nominated. Tanja saved Lea from being nominated. Instead of Lea, Ana and Dragica were nominated. 7 days later Dragica left the House. Tanja lost her power because she disrespected Big Brother's order not to mention anything to the other Housemates. On the 3rd nominations on Day 35 she was nominated by Big Brother. Lea and Simon were also nominated from the side of their Housemates.

The 3rd nominations were also Public Nominations. On these nominations Housemates had to nominate 2 Housemates in front of the rest of the Housemates. On these nominations everyone nominated the same Housemates they have nominated on the day before; during the False Nominations, except Yameisey who has changed her mind and had nominated Zoran instead of Simon and Simon who took the chance to revenge and had nominated Ana and Ante instead of Danijel and Zoran. 7 days later, Simon left the House.

Lea in the 1st week of the show received a secret mission from BigBrother. She had to sabotage the Housemates and had to be nominated when the nominations come. Lea, also as Tanja, received an order not to mention anything about her secret mission or she will be evicted. She disrespected the order by hinting something to her Housemates and on Day 7 Big Brother told her that her secret mission was successful, but Big Brother took 20 000 HRK (2670 EUR) from the Main Prize because Lea had hinted something to her Housemates.

On Day 56 Violeta received her secret mission which gives her big power. On Day 55 Big Brother told the Housemates that they have to compose the order on which they will enter the Confessions Room and nominate 2 Housemates. Violeta was placed last on that list. Violeta became the Juda of Big Brother House. If she tells or hints something to her Housemates she will lost her power and be nominated on the next nominations. How does her power work? On nominations Violeta will always nominate last. When she enters the Confessions Room Big Brother will tell her who are the nominated Housemates. She has to choose 1 Housemate who isn't nominated. That Housemate also becomes nominated. On Day 56 that Housemate was Tanja who had 0 votes of the rest of the Housemates.

Danijel received a secret mission to sabotage the Week Task. The Task was to make wine. Danijel had to spilt some wine every time when Big Brother asks Yameisy to come to the Confessions Room. Thanks to Danijel Housemates passed the Week Task. If Danijel had failed the Housemates would have fallen the Wekk Task. Bravo Danijel!

From Days 71-77 Violeta had a secret mission to break 14 plates, hide the House credit card and to stock Ante. Violeta was successful in her secret mission! For reward Big Brother applted the Housemates requestes for buying cigarettes, entering in the Surprise Room and playing music quiet than louder while waking the Housemates.

Big Brother told that every housemate will be hypnotised by a hypnotiser Leon The Great. Actually none of the housemates were hypnotised. They all were not hypnotised on the excuse that they have a secret mission. It was a great joke! All of the secret missions were successful!

On the final, 99th Day 10 Housemates who left the House came back in the House, but not as participants, but as friends on the finalists so they can help them to "cut" time while the show is running and the final results aren't announced.

Big Brother oprepaired Yameisy a surprise and brought her mother Julia from Cuba. It was a huge and a great surprise for Yameisy. Yameisy told that she won a million only by seeing her Mom. It was a very touching moment.
