Big Bay Dam was an earthen dam located 11 miles west of Purvis, Mississippi in Lamar County. On March 12, 2004, the dam broke sending water downstream destroying 48 homes and businesses while many more were damaged. In the first five miles downstream from the dam, trees were totally flattened by a 15 to 20 foot wall of water. Farther downstream, numerous homes were pushed off their foundation. The flood ended in Marion County. The damage was compared to the type associated with F2-F3 size tornadoes.[1]
