That's an interesting dismissal of the many views of everyone who doesn't see the need for a survey, and thus disagrees with you, just to deem us all "non-scholars", knowing little about science. I am not sure what, exactly, works better if we just let scientists research what they want. Budgets generally don't, for one thing; you were speaking in sweepingly general terms. Perhaps Joseph Mengele's research wasn't that of a scholar or a scientist; one can only hope. And, yes, I know that a survey is a not a brutal, physical experiment, although either can be a result of letting scholars/scientists research what they want, unhindered by the views of the general public.
