Bhuvanagiri is located at 11.47° N 79.63° E.[1] It has an average elevation of 11 metres (36 feet). Bhuvanagiri is located 7 km from the world famous temple town Chidambaram.

Bhuvanagiri is the birth place of the famous saint of South India, Sri Ragavendra Swami. The word Bhuvanagiri is a combination of two words - Bhuvanam (means World) and Giri (means Mountain or Unmovable). Hence, the name Bhuvanagiri can mean "the place that does not move". The town is also close to the birth place of Saint Ramalinga Adigalar (town Maruthur). Bhuvanagiri is internally divided into Melbhuvanagiri & Kelbhuvanagiri.

The town is also famous for handloom products (such as lungies, hand kerchiefs, saris, dhotis, etc.). It is also known for its Silk saris and Silk Textiles which are famously referred to as Bhuvanagiri Pattu.

There are many small temples in Bhuvanigiri. One of them is Sri Chamundeeswari Amman temple. Ancient temples of Varadharaja perumal (in Adivaraganathan) kamatchi amman koil(near oneway),Thirowpathi amman koil & Shiva-Eswaran (near tourist bungalow) are located in bhuvanagiri.

A road bridge in bhuvanagiri connects the roadway between cuddalore (in the north) & chidambaram (in the south). Famous river Vellaru (a tributary of river Cauvery) provides water for irrigation. Sugarcane and rice are the commonly cultivated crops in this place. Bhuvanagiri is a legislative assembly constituency.

There are two higher secondary schools in Bhuvanagiri - the Government Boys Higher Secondary School and the Government Girls Higher Secondary School. Two more famous Private Higher secondary schools are Subramaniya Bharathiyar Matriculation Hr Sec School & Mangalam Matriculation Hr Sec School and many more schools are there.. And two junior colleges for kinter garden like Sri Arunachala vidhalaya located in cuddalore main road Keel Bhuvanagiri and SRT Junior college.morethan that it has so many private schools like Kalaivani Matriculation School, Kennedy nursery school, Rainbow nursery school, and MANGALAM teacher training training institute, MANGALAM ITI, etc.., Is is known for its education. The Annamalai University is a few km away from Bhuvanagiri.

Bhuvanagiri constitutes of mixed culture. Hindus, Muslims and Christians are living together without any differences with cooperation of each other all of them are showing they are one national called Indian.

Bhuvanagiri is the birth place of Saint Raghavendra.

As of 2006 India census,[2] Bhuvanagiri had a population of 20,656. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Bhuvanagiri has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 79% and female literacy of 64%. 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
