Bhat (tribe)

Bhat (Urdu: بھٹ), also spelled Butt, is a Muslim clan of the Kashmir region of Pakistan and India. It is also used as a family name. The name is derived from the Sanskrit Bhat (भट), meaning "scholar."

In Kashmir, the Butt tribe is extremely large. The Kashmiri Butt tribe consists of many other families such as Shaikh, Dar, Khawaja, Lone and Mir. The involvement of these 5 families, which also originally originate from the Butt tribe many centuries ago make the tribe even larger in number and greater in majority. Bhats were Hindus of the pandit caste however with the advent of Islam in Kashmir, many Bhat people were converted to Islam.
